Okay, this just recently started happening a few days ago despite owning my G73 since last February. ANYWAY, what's happening is the computer will randomly go into sleep mode at weird times. Yesterday it did it twice, both within 2 hours of leaving it idle.

All of my power settings have not been changed. Everything is set to "never" when plugged in, set to sleep an hour after being on battery. Aside from installing a few Steam games and the removal of a dysfunctional sub-woofer, there hasn't been any changes that might have caused conflicts.

The problem is also not from overheating. Aside from one time when I left Just Cause 2 minimized for a bit over an hour, most times the system is at idle, usually downloading this or that. Plus, overheating normally shuts the computer down completely which isn't what's happening.

    1) Does using Windows System Restore to restore your system back back a few days to the time when this did not occur resolve the issue? If so, you can look more closely at what is installed to the system (even Windows Updates) to see if you can isolate the culprit.

    2) What does HWINFO64 tell you about the Wear Level of your battery? You may need to recalibrate ( HP Battery Health Center discusses battery recalibration) or consider a new battery. Does your laptop run stable without the battery installed? If not, your power adapter may be failing (or worse - the power in your home is failing...) ;>{)>

    3) Do Errors or Warnings in the System or Application Event Logs point to a troubleshooting direction?

    4) Are you running the ASUS Factory OS or a clean Windows 7 installation? When I read about issues like this I become suspicious of Power4Gear.

    5) Do you have any peripheral devices attached to your laptop when this issue occurs?

    1) I have auto-updates disabled. It updates way too damn frequently, constantly pestering me to restart. -_- So I just download whatever updates like once a month. However I haven't updated in awhile. Only other software changes are from Steam, not sure if that has anything to do with power settings?

    2) Battery is fine, I'll have to check to see how it runs without it. Haven't seen it switch to battery at any time, though.

    3) I'll pull up the event log next time it happens, see if it says anything. I'm thinking not likely though.

    4) Factory OS. I don't see why power4gear would start acting up now. Like I said, I've had it for over a year and I just can't see a program randomly changing things without some other outside help.

    5) Yes, but nothing new. Mouse, headphones, controller.

Hasn't done anything today and I've only seen it occur about 4 times so far.

Okay, I think I found out the issue. It's PowerDVD 11. The timestamps of it getting an error and terminating are within seconds of every time it went into sleep mode without me doing it. Now to find out how to fix that. -_-

I have this same laptop, and I think the same issue but it is so inconsistent. Sometimes it's when I plug in a peripheral device like my receiver for my wireless mouse, or my USB headphones, or a joystick to play games. It will fight me to go into sleep mode, I'll have to shake the mouse our mash the space bar for 4 or 5 cycles of trying to go to sleep before it stays awake. But other times it will just be when installing a program or opening a game that goes to full screen. It will constantly try to go to sleep while switching to the resolution of the game. It also does it when I try to open Dayz commander for some reason. Regardless, it attempts to go to sleep under very random circumstances at completely inconsistent times. Anyone else having this problem?

Just throwing this out there. Check in control panel, power options - the settings for what the buttons/lid closing do. Set those to "do nothing" to test. Perhaps whatever sensor closing the lid activates (and hence telling the machine to sleep/hibernate/whatever) is broken and activates randomly? Worth checking.

I agree with that, it may be a dodgy sensor and the interference of plugging in a device is triggering it.
