To get into the mood for this thread, I went browsing through the various Alienware and Sager/Clevo forums, to see what it's like to have issues that have plagued various models and been ignored by their respective manufacturers. (stupid hinges)
I figured we needed a thread to praise our now-working hardware, and revel in our accomplishments. One thing I have noticed is that the threads seem to be more about what add-ons and hardware to get to use with our notebooks, instead of screaming about how I lost my game progress due to vertical lines.![]()
So share with us why you  your G73JH.

Tell you when I get mine.......
BTW only 2 of us in the IRC channel.. Common guys. -
I love mine. I just wish it was here so I can show my appreciation by playing copious amounts of Portal.
-
Much love for the G73JH here.
-
OK, we get that you love it, but why? So that people checking out this thread to help decide if they should buy it can be emboldened by our tales of wenching and conquests!
I suppose I'll start. I got the laptop because I need one for the long downtimes at work I get, plus being able to play Dragon Age at 1080p with MSAA enabled on a laptop is the mac daddy. -
This laptop given me the ability to do high-end emulation (dolphin, Pscx2, M.A.M.E., Demul(Naomi), M.E.S.S. etc.) on the go!!
There's nothing like playing my beloved WII games in 1080p, and 4x MSAA. Mario, Link, and Samus have never been so beautiful.
Not to mention owning a laptop that can truly take down greats like Starcraft 2, Mass Effect 2, and Crysis.
All for under $1500!!! -
What do I love????
How powerful the laptop is; Core i7 + 5870 rocks
The amount of fast ram that i have, runs everything in multitask mode (video, winrar, browsing, AV, everything t the same time)
The size is perfect for me
The amount of USB ports
1080p fits everything. The LEd screen is bright.
And overall, I can play everything in highest settings and the laptops runs cool, so i can play with the computer over my laps or in my bed
an also
The nice cummunity at NBR -
I love my g73 because it has allowed me to play all those games in full pumped out settings at 1080p that I used to watch my bro play on his desktop.
. Not to mention, I have yet to experience majority of the issues users have posted here *knock on wood*.
-
ummm because it look like a stealth fighter of course.......the looks going through airport screening are priceless.
-
I really like it even when I have the missing keystrokes issue which is kind of my choice now as I have more than a couple ways to fix it (posted them in the appropriate thread). I have had no other issues with it other than some buddies nicknamed it Mazinger (Tranzor Z in the US)

Why I love my G73...
Because of this forum I was able to....
Fix GSOD with BIOS 211 and vBIOS 93
Realize I didn't need a repaste and save myself a few hours
Get Maya 2008 and 2011 working
Fix my Creative Drivers so sound kicks azz everwhere
Figure out that I'm not a noob and everyones SSD's run like crap
Use SETFSB and pull a 142mHz FSB out of my butt and cook along @ almost 3gHz all day long
Actually use Catalyst 10.8's that work like a charm
so, thanks to you all for doing ASUS's dirty work haha! -
Also this is my 100th post! -
Where's Hellcry?
I expected him to crash on this thread already...
-
He's busy looking for GSOD's.
Anyways, I would be happier if the screen/lid was made out of a stronger plastic or have a metal backing. Kinda crazy how much it flops when you open, but a minor annoyance. -
I love my G73 because it was/is the ultimate gaming laptop at a very reasonable price. That mean my gaming goodness can travel when I do. While I never use it on my lap or w/o AC connected it's portable enough to take with me whenever or where I go.
As a Mac user I have no use for Windows except to play games. This G73 has Windows 7, AV, 14 games and VMware Workstation (for a full copy of my work config just in case; and it doesn't pollute my gaming environment) installed plus all my game saves and profiles. Originally a BB G73 owner I sold my BB and bought the X2 to get the 1080p display and Bluetooth. I've since added the Intel 6300N Wifi card and a BD-RE drive, not because I really needed them but because I could easily add them to my ultimate gaming station.
I love to power it on and see how quickly it boots (especially after upgrading to the 500GB Seagate Hybrid XT) and how I can set most every setting in my games to High or Ultra w/o annoying slowdowns.
I love my G73 because it has an ATI GPU, regardless of all the difficulties surrounding drivers I personally dislike nvidia. I'm still holding a grudge after the 8x00 mobile GPU debacle.
From a PC standpoint I've never had a Windows PC that's performed so well and caused me so little trouble. (1 GPU freeze b4 I OC to 705/1100)
I have not installed the fixes described in this forum and will not do so until I come across a game that requires it. I love my G73 as it is!
Cheers, -
even when i hated asus for not fixing the issues with the g73 i still loved it.
it looks mean. this should be all i need to say. but there is more.
it feels fantastic to touch. i am genuinly surprise how nice it feels to use. fantastic textures. and i used to own a carbon sony.
it is the perfect size (even travelling with it inside it's backpack it's perfect - i travela bit for work) the right mix of sturdiness, screen size and keyboard layout. once it's on your back it actually feels "lighter" than a business notebook in a shoulder bag hanging off one of your shoulders.
the screen. by fay the best notebook screen going around. by far. even though it is high gloss to boost contrast.
fantastic base configurations. corei7. 8gb ram. kickass video card.
it's quiet - even with the fans running full bore it is easily more quiet than the sony it replaced.
the performance. because i travel a lot, i spend a bit of time in hotels. with this baby i can take my gaming with me wherever i go. simply awesome.
nothing says "i am your overlord" better than turning up to a conference, setting this up on a boardroom table and everybody in the room go "i submit myself to your awesomeness sir!" when people see you interacting with windows, photoshop and premierpro live they can't believe the snappy response and the "that window opened up even before he clicked it" speed.
the keyboard backlighting is as near perfect as i have ever seen on a notebook and almost on par with logitech g-series. gear. awesome. (which is why i was so emo when asus burned mine out for months).
finally a pc with no switches, buttons, catches, or other things that can snap off or break on the outside of the chassis. elegant and safe.
tweaks i made:
i keep a copy of all my game save-games and stuff on a cloud drive that i can access anywhere from my "home" gaming rig or the asus. meaning whereiver i go i can do a quick synch and play from where i left off.
i pulled out one of the 500gb drives and replaced with an intel 160gb SSD. run the os and "important" games from this drive. easily one of the best enhancements you can make.
clean install of win764 pro with only minimal asus bloatware put back on. no creative drivers (on any pc that you own, if your pc is crashing, take out the creative card or remove the drivers and it will be fine).
spare power supply. the ps is almost as heavy as the notebook itself. i leave one at work so i dont have to travel with it to/from the office everyday.
i have made the switch to 3d gaming on my gaming rig now, so the new g73jw is starting to look really interesting - however i run dual 470 in sli to get good framerates on 3d so i'm dubious about how a single 460m will be able to deliver. -
It's quieter, faster, and cooler (temps, design) then my desktop.
It's the most powerful machine I've ever owned, and since Asus upgraded me from an i5 to an i7, and I'm getting another Seagate Momentus XT + Xbox for Windows Wired Controller + backpack tomorrow from Seagate, I'm happier then a pig in mud.
Not to mention, when I take it to the library people do double takes. haha
(as a couple ppl did at church on Sunday) -
New vbios didn't fix my problem. Off to asus for ANOTHER repair. Hopefully they'll fix it this time.
-
We dont take to kindly to your...kind here....
*Spits* -
I love G73 because it is the official notebook of the monocle tea club
-
I love mine.

saw the look then saw the specs and one word came to mind
'Sweet'
then saw the price compared to others and two words came to mind
'Dude, sweeter'

I love mine. It's fast, responsive, can do/play just about anything, good display...really no complaints from me.
At least, there better not be when it comes back from RMA. I've come to hate Asus in the past month. -
I would like to add that the G73JH is now at the #3 slot for "Most Viewed Laptops" sidebar! woot woot woot!!

Long story short: I got it to play a video game. I wanted to have a portable machine that could do a decent job of playing City of Heroes, and I wanted it to support a largeish monitor. It has done that pretty well. There have been issues along the way (some combination of Windows sucking and me not knowing my way around it), but the machine itself was pretty inexpensive, and yet, has great specs for my purposes. It plays games well enough, it's got some features I really love (such as a second drive bay -- shame they can't sell the brackets for it), and with the vBIOS fix, it even seems like it's pretty decently supported.
-
Let's see...
It's fast. Besides Crysis (which I need to run at 1680x1050, all settings max except for shadows to get smooth gameplay), I can get pretty much all of my games to run smoothly at 1080p with almost everything cranked up and minimum fuss.
8 gigs of RAM and Win7 64x pretty much allows some serious multi-tasking.
2x500GB HDDs give me a ton of space to store files, games, media and other stuff. Though I wish I'd opted to go with SSDs for better performance.
The LED back-lit screen is also pretty nice and bright. Nice cooling too, doesn't get too hot even after 2 hours of intense gaming. Oh and it's been pretty problem-free so far. All at a price that doesn't break the bank.
Overall, pretty much one of the best purchases I've made since I started with PC gaming. -
Well its a really fast rig. I used to buy low end laptops because I didn't see the point of buying a laptop to game with since they are always slower than desktops. This one was reasonably priced so I thought I would give it a go.
I can play games all night and write code all day on the same computer. When I get tired of being in the computer room at my house, I can pick it up and head to my recliner. It plays pretty much every game I am into with everything maxed out. I have to tune Crysis a little bit to get it to run smoothly, but you can still run it at some pretty impressive settings.
If I could solve the missed keystroke issue while my touch pad is enabled, this would officially be the best. laptop. ever. As it is, I still love it and I probably wouldn't use the TP that much even if it did work right. -
It cost the same as my hel80 did and I get so much more performance out of it. Also a bigger, brighter, better screen. I tweak all my computers anyways so I don't see the big deal in finding problems; bonus points if the manufacturer fixes them before you can. The only thing I don't like about it? The stock wireless card is fine for home usage, but for ...other.. usage it leaves something to be desired, I was tempted to post/run some hacked drivers that make it better
Oh and the speaker grill dust. You try and keep it clean but man, I CAN SEE IT IN THERE. -
-
So far after one night in hand, the A1 has performed as expected. Fast, cool, quiet, and stable once things were in order. Ran about a 2hr TF2 game with a friend and she didn't even hiccup once. One thing that kinda surprised me was the range and speed of the Atheros WiFi, that little card picked up networks from about 1000ft away lol.
More testing to commence. Also like other I must admit it is big but at the same time not near as heavy as you would expect. Had it on my lap the entire time I Was TF2ing and it did not get anything past a touch warm while also not causing any legs to go asleep. -
Without the battery, it's actually quite a light computer. Even with the battery though, it's still not what I consider heavy. It's like half a pound heavier than my 6920 so it's not a big deal.
-
Love mine also now with the new vBios.
-
Very happy with the new vbios. No crashes in any games.
-
They did the whole chemical sniffer thing on it... lol -
The size battery does look like a tactical nuke ;p
-
It is so quiet, stays very cool, and since I added a SSD, it blazes, and yet with the hdd, it has more than enough space for all my music, photos and work docs. It boots faster than any other computer I have had, and whenever people at work or my friends watch me start it up, they are simply amazed at how fast it boots on the ssd. I can not only work faster, it plays any game I play without stutter, even on the ones that many others complain have lag. I have none. And I have the BB 05, so for the price, it blows away anything else I was looking at. Very happy I chose this bad boy.

I am quite happy with my g73jh. It works wonderfully now that the gsod/lockups are fixed and thanks to Ziddy I now coast along at 43C Gpu while web surfing or doing any basic tasks, essentially shutting the fan off. Due to this though I'm gonna repaste my cpu to improve it just a little as it is sitting at 50-51C and maybe quiet that fan down to absolute silence as well, making my happiness increase even more.(I have really, really sensitive hearing so even a quiet laptop is somewhat noisy for me.) I am glad that I purchased this beast.
-
got mine.. very happy now.. just going to do the driver updates soon..
-
Proud owner here
purchased mine 3 month ago $850 refurbished~ have 2 year warranty with squaretrade
no problems running aion and other demanding games all day.. everything except the keyboard missing stroke issue but i can live with that
-
... no GSOD.. very happy and true believer!
-
Picture is as old as the hills man, but it gets me every time. -
I love my G73JH-X1 since it never GSOD on games, no KB lag, no creative issues! It's a beast that can take on an Alienware for half the price, and also one of the fastest laptop as said by AOTS. Temps are my only concern since I don't have any self-confidence to tear apart this beast without breaking something, especially when removing the KB and the speaker connectors.
Running 67C now on 300/1000 clocks. But I'd still love this machine even if it didnt have the liquid thermal pads that the JW has, cause the 5870M can obliterate the 460M!
only thing left for my X1:
1. repaste, hope Gary finds a way for an asus repair center to repaste for us who are not from the USA
2. another hdd caddy, the estore doesnt have them anymore and even the other online store, maybe the JW will bring some stock back -

thanks panzer
how much did shipping cost for you? -

I am very happy with my G73. All games that I played ran at highest settings (except settlers IV) with ease. Only issue I have is the keyboard missing strokes, but it is not that big of an issue compared what I get back for it.
