Just ordered my 920XM ES. Should be here next week. I have some AS5 at the house, but I'm looking for suggestions for a different paste. Time to do some more research on Throttle stop!

<------I think my new avatar likes it too!

lawl the first thing I saw when I opened the post was the camp smiley face.

What model did you go for?

Good purchase and plenty of time for you to reseach Throttlestop, your in luck I plan to make a vid this evening bout the basics of my XM and Unclewebb's throttlstop and might throw in some 100oC throttles to spice things up a bit ;)

I ordered this one: Intel Mobile Extreme Core i7-920XM Q3B8 Socket 988 CPU | eBay

I know it was used, but it was used for motherboard design purpose. I thought I would take a chance, if it doesn't work I put it on my credit card so I can pursue that, Paypal or eBay to get my money back. But I'm sure it will be fine.

Im sure it will be fine my QS works perfectly but might be a good idea to pick up some ICD for these bad boys you want a nice thick TIM conducting with these things when unlocked they run hot. AS5 is old skool and I wouldn't recommend it for an XM if you plan to overclock it.

Good score on the cpu! I found one through a different seller (has 10 actually), and I think I'm going to scrape up the cash next friday. Cant wait!. What is the best ICD I can get? I was looking at the 7 carat diamond one........

the only difference between the ICD packages (7 carat or 24 carat) is the size of the tube..the content is of the same quality, and the smallest one (7 carat) should be enough for quite a lot of applications.
Seems like buying this used bad guys is no bad idea at all! they're reaaally cheap! Nice one pal!

ICD7 and 24 are the same. It's just the amount of paste you get in the tube.

My wife just got a second job (first one pays $30per hour, second pays $37) and I've been in the military for a while, so I thought; why not? I really don't even need it, but I WANT it!

    Lak666 beat me to it.

ICD 7 and 24 are no different people commonly compare it to precious metal being higher carot is better the difference is the amount you receive there is no difference in the product itself. ICD7 can repaste around 4 or 5 chips with ease. I managed to get 6 out of it.

@Lak666 Laptop monkey do a very good deal with a brand new chip which is a QS also around $300 here.

@Fallen The stock score on notebookcheck is without the multipliers being unlocked have a look at my 3DMark06 results and I get 5400 points against the stock 3800 :) its all about unlocking the multi's and it turns into a monster.

Guess I ordered too much then. No biggie, I have a JTAG'ed Xbox, and the HP mini 311 that I add thermal paste to every once in a while on them. So I guess the ICD will replace the AS5 when the time comes.

Actually, the type of paste doesn't matter if you've got good contact between the heat sink and the CPU. Generally, thinner is better, since the copper heat sink is a better conductor than the TIM... the paste is just there to make sure there aren't any air pockets.

ICD is nice because it's non-conductive and thick and gooey, so you can put a bunch on and then squeeze all the excess out without worrying about shorts. But if you do that, all the excess TIM will prevent proper heat dissipation from the PCB in those areas - generally not a problem, but *can* be an issue, sometimes.

IMO the type of paste does matter its a matter of opinion and those that see a difference between the compound. I saw a difference a vast difference and so will recommend it especially when the XM can reach 90oC with ease it is worth having a paste which although small shows an improvement over another paste.

Less is more when it comes to ICD as well a small pea blob is all that is needed there should not be any excess if you apply it correctly.

Yeah, the type of paste matters, but not because of the reasons most people use. It's the difference in viscosity and adherence - not because of the thermal transfer rating.

As for AS5, it's fine. Unless the tube you have was manufactuered a long time ago, the "age" - that is to say the day the stuff was introduced to the market - of the TIM doesn't matter. When applied properly, they all perform about the same. But it's the difficulty of application that prevents most people from using the TIM appropriately. That's why you see a lot of people saying "ICD is best!", because they were able to apply it successfully, when they're actually comparing it to a bad application of a less viscous TIM.

If you lap your CPU and your heatsink, you can use the bare minimum of just about anything and you'll get oustanding results. Heck, if you have the equipment to prepare the materials properly, you may not even need a TIM (but this is unlikely). If you're working with imperfect materials however, ICD is a nice choice because of the thickness and non-conductive material. In a G73 - with asus providing garbage heatsinks - it's probably the best tool for the job. But like all tools, there are some jobs where it doesn't work as well.

I guess I'm saying that ICD is better only because it takes less skill to apply correctly and leaves much more room for error. It's not actually drastically better for thermal transference.

Make sure you check for when the shipping will be. I noticed with mine that it was going to be next week. For the ones out of Thailand it was the end of next month.

Uploading a movie now should be an hour or two though as its quite big and will add it to my 920XM post I am hoping this will give you all a kick up the a''e actually because we have been talking a lot about how good the XM model is and how well it performs but stopping and thinking for a second and not looking at the bad points that it brings heat, power consumption and if not used correctly death to you laptop. I have made it clear that unlocking the cores and overclocking must be done with care and even at stock the XM model is powerful you must be confident in what you are doing before attempting to overclock and I show this as best I can in the movie.

I have also shown you what 100 watts and near enough 100oC looks like in the movie as a way to warn you away from not treating these models with respect. All of you interested in the 920XM on a serious note go do your research now and understand how they work it wont be fun and games if you melt your motherboard.

Looking forward to the upload, and I'll watch it tomorrow. I'm going to be conservative on the overclocking. I really don't want to destroy this thing, but if it happens, it happens.

I'll make to measure twice, cut once.
