I have the G73JW-3DE on the optical drive doesn't respond when I load a disc. The computer recognizes the drive, but the drive doesn't recognize any disc. Last time this happened 6 months ago, I believe I had to do a restore point. Is there another way around? Seems there is an update that cause the drive not to function properly.

check event log for any disk related read error for that optical drive
i fear its might be failing which is very common among optical drive
but if it as u say pop out after a restore may be driver related which can be
corrected by deleting and letting window to reinstall the optical disk driver again after reboot
but first find out what the event log says

I check the event log, no errors related to the drive. I uninstalled the driver for the drive, then did a reboot. Any discs I put in just look like "no disk", except blue rays, they will spin but roxio cineplayer wouldn't play them correctly, so I when on ASUSTEK and downloaded WINDVD8 and it didn't have the current AAC codes, so it didn't work either. I tried changing the autoplay settings for all disc types, but nothing has worked.

I created a topic for a similar problem, so I might as well ask here too. Do most/all laptop dvd drives work in the G73jh?

I've updated the GTX 460M video drivers and the blu-rays will play now with windvd, but the drive still will not recognize cds or dvd of any type. What is causing the conflict?

No Luck. Here is more info that I posted on other forums:

Hi I have a laptop with a Mata UJ240ABAL-A Blu-Ray drive. The drive will play Blu-Rays, but doesn't recognize cds or dvds. When cds or dvds are inserted in disk management it just show "no media" in the box. I'm running windows 7 home ed. I've read forums where similar Mata drives in vista had similar problems and the user had to delete the upper and lower limits in the registry edit. Do I need to do that and is it different for windows 7? I've already unistalled and reinstalled the drivers for the drive, that didn't work.
