After researching how to get the best G73 experience I've decided one thing. There is a great wealth of information regarding the G73, but it's highly fragmented, and often jumbled with off topic banter.
I was hoping that we could get some of you G73 expert types to create a thread for those of us less tech savvy people, going from ordering to operating this machine to its greatest potential. Of course the major hurdle would be keeping it "professional” and unbiased. It's very possible I'm missing an important thread relating to this, and if I am I apologize ahead of time for my ignorance. I think a thread similar to the following would be awesome.
- Ordering: models, best options, unnecessary upgrades, best/worst resellers
- Out of the box: something similar to the ASUS bloat ware guide that describes what software can be turned off/removed to improve performance, also what Win7 features might be holding back your performance, and which software downloads will greatly aid in the experience
- Tech side: what to do to improve fan, cpu, gpu, mobo, etc. functionality
- Maintenance side: cleaning and maintaining the machine for greater performance and longevity
To play off of this I actually have some questions regarding the G73.
1. If I get the 1TB (5200RPM) and the 500 GB (7200RPM) would putting all of my applications (including OS) on the 500 GB and all of my movies, music, and pictures on the 1TB give me greater performance than doing it the other way around? If so which HD does the OS come on by default ( www.xoticpc.com has the 1TB listed as the primary, if that matters)
2. Is there any significant improvement of the N 6200 over the integrated wireless card? The upgrade is only $35 more (on xoticpc).
3. I’ve read about a wealth of driver problems. Are any of these avoided simply by refusing any of the bundled software?
4. I found someone claiming that current laptops were not shipping with actual Blu-Ray burning capability, and rather it was deceptive labeling. Is there any truth to this, or is the G73JH-A1 optional 6x optical drive truly a Blu-Ray read/write drive?
I’d like to thank anyone for their help ahead of time, and also explain my apparent lack of initiative by not working on my own purposed guide... Honestly I don’t think I am nearly tech savy enough to attempt this (and I don’t even own a G73 yet!).

Actually, there are some good threads already created on getting rid of the bloatware.
*edit* To be more helpful:
1. They're not 1TB, they're two HD's with a total of 1TB of space.
2. You can get 300mbps thruput as opposed to 150.
3. There's a good bloatware guide out there if you search the forum.
4. There's software you can download for free from ASUS for BD playback if yours is missing it. It's a bit gimped, though. -

Up to you, but $35 seems like a fair price considering I paid $22 for it online and installed it myself ^^ -
I edited the original post with a link to one of the bloatware guides, also thanks to Kalim's signature there's now two links to cleaning up unnecessary software
As for the 1TB vs (x2) 50GB. On xoticpc they have an option for a single 1TB HDD and an additional HDD. I mentioned it to one of their customer service reps and he didn’t say anything about it not being an option.
I still am confused about the Blu-Ray drive. My question is, are you able to burn Blu-Rays with the optional x6 optical drive?
Thank you for your answers. Is anyone interested in working on a guide for optimizing the G73? In all actuality you could bounce around different sources and find everything you need, but I thought it would be great to have it all in one clean thread. -
must be the new WD 1 TB drive. Nice option
There are 2 options on the Blu Ray. A reader only version (cheaper) and a Read/Write (about 200ish more). As long as you get the R/W version you will be able to burn -
I'm excited about the 1TB. It's a little slower than I like, but I think the space will help me forget about it.
Thank you for answering my BR question.
