THIS TUTORIAL WORKS WITH THE FREE VERSION OF SETFSB

Hi everyone, I created this tutorial to all who have an Asus g73JW equipped with a quad core i7 (Its the same for i5).
I dont know if that works on ASUS G73JH and ASUS G53JW

    So lets start :)

    1ST STEP: download freeware SetFSB
    http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/download/ver22/setfsb_2_2_134_98.zip

You can also use the last setfsb shareware :
    http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/download/ver23/setfsb_2_3_165_130.zip

2ND STEP: Run SetFSB go in diagnosis mode, and select Clock Generator PLL dignosis "

3RD STEP: Turn on the Asus Twin-Turbo, wait 5 seconds, press get FSB and normally D8 will change to 31:

When its done, turn off The twin-turbo! It is very important if you dont activate it the 2 values can not be changed!

4TH STEP: Now that values the D8 and 31 are released, D8 must be replaced by 58 . When it's done if you increase the value 31 to 32, the CPU frequency increases! So with this value you can change the frequency of the cpu!!

You can also change D8 to 15 but the max not to exceed the second value is 34 if ther is no BSOD (in my case!).At 34, the frequency is 2065Mhz cpu, when i oc my cpu to 2.1GHz there is a BSOD (I think that my Memory limit the oc)

With throttlestop, you can put multipier to Turbo, your cpu speed is OC to 2,24ghz on 4 cores !!!

But its also overclock the ram, in my case it almost reaches 1600MHz!

    UPDATE

    NEW SOLUTION
I give you now the G73 PLL. You just have to download it ASUS G73JH FINAL.pll - 0.00MB, open Setfsb, Go to creator, go to import and select the pll. After go to control, select getfsb and you will be able to modify your processor's clock !

    Have fun !!

WARNING: OVERCLOCKING IS VERY DANGEROUS SO DONT COPY IT IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER !!!!! I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED TO YOUR MACHINE!

    I can't set my D8 value higher than 38. If I set it to 39 I get BSOD. 38 is about 1.8ghz...
    and what is throttlestop?

Well, I can verify that this does indeed work. Works WAY better than Twin-Turbo (which is crap). So far I can cap out @ 37 (146.5 Bus Speed in CPU-z).

Here is a link to a screen shot under full load, still boosting to the 13x multi (not 12x like twin-turbo).
    Full Load

Here is a link to a screen shot after I finished the stress test...
    Post stress-test

So it looks like on my poor old BB G73JH, the little 720QM just got boosted without the downsides of Twin-Turbo (yay keeping the 13x multiplier)! I was hoping to hit 2.0ghz under full load, but it seems something is causing near instant BSODs as soon as it get a load put on it. Now here is the real question... how can I make this persist so when I load up on wall-power, that I have the OC every time? Do I have to manually force it each time?

Edit: Just found a downside to this method... it DOES NOT work without power4gear installed... has to be some kind of back-door involved with the Twin-Turbo button...

@andrei : can you give me you cpu !
@bluefalcon13 : I can see that your cpu speed is oc to 1,9ghz in full load, I think its pretty cool for a 720QM !!! My 740QM can reach 2,24ghz, somebody with a i7 840QM can reach ~2.5ghz !!

I forgot, there is an other thing, you can change the value 29 (in my case) to 41, this is the first value into the PLL control registrer !!! But you can have a BSOD !!!!(you must do it before any oc)

Yes, i know that problem, you must use the shareware version, when that ask you to enter your code, you pass (it will lock the setfsb button, you don't need this to use my method !!!)

Just an update... It does not persist through a hibernate, unsure about normal sleep. I used the freeware version, as far as I can tell you need power4gear installed for the turbo button, make sure you use the diag tab at the top, and hit get fab then. Follow the proceedures in the first post and it would work (I can verify it does on the G73JH original bestbuy version with the 720QM). If it isn't working for you, either you are missing power4gear or you might not be following the proceedure properly. I get insta BSOD above 37, my guess is RAM... If someOne wants to buy me some DDR3-1600 hyperx I can verify that for y'all... :p

As far as I can tell it needs to be set every time you power off or hibernate... I am unsure if it persists through sleep. If anything this is kinda validating paying for setfsb to me.

Could you please explain how you set multiplier at the max with throttlestop? For me it keeps changing the values of the fid. Can´t get fid to stay at maximum multiplier. Thanks in advance

You don't set the multiplier, atleast not with the i7-720. I just used throttlestops built in pi-tester to stress test single/dual/full load and observed the turboboost multi. At an 8 thread load you should be at 13x multi, twin-turbo knocks you down to 12x for some reason.

    I'm trying this on a G73JH with a Q740

I try to change D8 to 58 and 31 to 34 and when I click apply it won't change.....just goes back to what the values were.

This is after I pressed Get FSB

Also I'm wondering if I get to work am I doing something wrong by changing D8 to 58? PatKiller 99 mentioned changing D8 to 15....is there something I should do with that?

Just raise the PLL slider up to reach your maximum overclock.

See my sig for a video. You need to apply the W7 timing fix also.

Doesn't the PLL Slider just work in the paid version?

I saw the video before I did this....and ended up following your link from a quote of yours in the 2Ghz from a 720QM thread....saw the link for the free way with a 740Q.

BTW the W7 timing fix.....is that a one time thing or every reboot?

Watch my video mate it explains everything about the W7 timing fix and how to apply it, once applied you only restart once and can check if it has applied by running Win7Timer. If you want to use the full features of SETFsb just pay the $8 and get the license code its worth every penny and its yours for life.

Yeah the free way I guess isn't working for me, or maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I was wondering about paying for SetFSB. Do I have to convert to Japanese Yen using Paypal or something? How does that work?

Just click donate and log into paypal the conversion is done automatically into your currency fella. You can use the hex codes that others use but its good to support to developer and have the full program you may need it in the future on another computer.

Cool thanks for the info. I'm gonna do this....then upgrade my already v93 beta bios to the v93 OD bios so I can use ATI Overdrive. Then use your user.ini specs for The Witcher 2. The game could run alot better if I do that than what it is now with those specs.

Yep those settings do the job nicely, the only thing I have changed since then is SSAO I have switched that off to give me a solid 40-50 constant FPS ;) But I replaced the Shadows and Lighting 2 with a 3 to compensate without loss of frames.

    Here ya go:

This is also explained in my video mate and in the information linked to the video, every chip is different and although the voltage, clocks and CPU version may be the same as others each chip is 'binned' to make sure it can handle the clocks/voltage/wattage etc.. that it is issued with before it is allowed into Retail/OEM production.

The only way you can find out how high it can go is to test it some people get lucky and have very high stable overclock for instance my 720QM which can reach an obscene 190PLL but that is not normal and most struggle around 160-170PLL so the only way to find out is to trial and error which is shown in my video. The only other way to reach a higher overclock is to play with different RAM timings or to change the voltage which in the G73 JH you cannot without modding which I wont even discuss.

Dont expect amazing things from Overclock results you will experience a moderate increase depending on the overclock you can achieve and overclocking your ATI card will make more of a difference in Witcher 2 than the CPU.

Yeah definately. I was thinking might as well go with CPU OC to get any increase I can just from that......as well as the more major OC which is the GPU. I'll go for that 800/1000, see if that works on my system.

I paid for SetFSB so I'm waiting for my key. :)

Or someone could transcode setFSB's PLL config registers for various frequencies into a G73JW.lut file for use with setPLL and cost you nothing.

Yeah I'm only getting 11-12 frames per second in the first town using your user.ini and with the additional setting changes.

My CPU is overclocked to 162 PLL and at 1928.5MHZ. My GPU is overclocked to 800/1100 .

Don't have anything in my startup except the 3 ATK programs. Disabled services to 'Tweaked' setting from blackviper.com

I have Windows 7 core parking off.

All drivers are up to date as well as windows update. Windows Defender is off.

Bios is 213, Vbios is v93a with the od2 overdrive fix.

Also using 11.6 ATI AMD drivers

    HMMM....

I dont see you mention that you have updated to Witcher 2 Patch 1.2? That will be the reason if you have not because it fixes the ATI problems allowing you to run the game at high settings without FPS loss.

Ahhh when you copy and paste them into the config file and save it have you right clicked on it - properties and set it to read only? If not as soon as you run the game it will revert back to the old settings.

Otherwise try changing the memory budget down to 700 as I personally have it at 900.

yes it's at read only. I'll try changing that.

Hey I figured out the problem.....when I change the graphic options in options it still changes it!

So does that mean it doesn't really use the user.ini?

I was wondering what your settings are in the options Dallers so I can properly configure this! My framerate jumped WAY UP

Like lets say V-sync is disabled in the user.ini If it's enabled in the options of The Witcher 2 it will be turned on.

If you have not marked it as READ ONLY in properties it will change it that is what I just said - Make sure READ ONLY is ticked and dont go into the game settings.

You can see my settings on the other page it does use the user.ini.

Yeah I've had it set to read-only. I changed the V-sync just to check if it would make a difference. It's not using the User.ini to switch it off or on. Had it marked read-only the whole time without going into options.

I can tell if v-sync is on or not with that game because if v-sync is on the developer cutscenes at the beginning of the game will not have a cut, if it's off the developer cutscenes will have a cut.

The games settings never worked for me and I always had it on read-only immediately after using your settings, that's why it had such a low frame rate because until I changed it in options nothing would make a difference.

Hmmm weird how the user.ini is not working for me as it does for others?

Make sure you are changing the right one, it is not the one in your normal documents if you are using windows 7 you need to go into the user local folder.

LOL this was the reason I overclocked pretty much because of that user.ini in the programs folder.

Well hey it was cool to learn and I bet I'll benefit from the extra FPS anyways lol.

were you able to synchronize the clocks (win7 timer fix)? I was able to overclock my i740qm in G73JH bst-7 (BB), but I am unable to get clocks synced. I do as per instructions, it tells me "the operation was perfomed successfully", but clocs are still not synced.

also changing "31" to 38 raises my cpu's temp to 87C after about 6-8 min (at maximum test settings) of prime 95, all cores and threads tested. what temps do you get?

Its important to put turbo on and off... i didnt apply any timer fixes.

I downloaded latest setfsb and changed values as described. I didnt use Prime for stress testing so i dont know how high the temps go - i will download it and test it someday in this week if i have time cause am abroad atm.

For testing i used 3Dmark06 and i must say that performance raise is noticed in BF3 aloso - played few hours at a time and all things stable.

I repasted the laptop when i bought it...

    Hello,

I stumbled upon this website when searching for solutions to my G73JH PROBLEMS. I have been reading for about 2 weeks, i finally got everything working right (including the re-paste). My last project was to Overclock my system a little bit, i ended up with these results in Fumark Vantage: http://3dmark.com/3dmv/3708344

Pll 183/760 2105 mhz temps on idle ~52, Temps on full load~73-75
vid 800/1100 Temps on idle 47, temps on full load 76

So far so good. Next step is to stress test my system. Any tips?

I want to thank everyone in this community! You guys are awesome. So much information regarding this laptop, I'm glad i bought it 8 months ago :D
