Because the 460m runs cooler than the 5870m, will overclocking the GPU degrade the GPU significantly? I was reading i7.Asus's overclocking guide for the G73jw and noticed that he got some great results. My question is, with those settings, would it be safe for gaming to make up for loss of performance from the 5870m?

Someone has to stop spreading false rumors.

    GTX 460M doesn't run cooler.

GTX 460M doesn't overclock as well.

And overclocked HD5870M still wins and still runs under 80C in gaming.

Doesn't overclock well? Hope thats a joke.

I've gone from the stock 675mhz to 800mhz perfectly stable never going over 80c. And getting another 200mhz out of the memory.

I went from a 12,4XX 3dmark06 score to a 13,900ish score. Pretty nice gain, making it worth overclocking.

    Just compare vantage GPU scores.

My 5870M at normal gaming overclocks gets 9.2k. 460M owners?

870/1100 OC on my 5850M which is similar to 5870M. I can go 900/1100 stable and still get under 75C on MW2.
    Don't think the 460M can d that.

jeez what clocks are you running at? I can reach 9.2k only with 815 core and 1375 memory... but I'd rather not have my GPU over 80C while gaming.

Try running Furmark for 30 minutes. I have never gone above 78-79 degrees. I'm on a Asus G73jw btw.

    Im running stable at 460M

    815 - Core clock
    1630 - Shader clock
    1500 - Memory clock

That is max overclock without touching the voltage and in Mw2 the average tempeture is 65, so the its cooler as well.

So your clock core is a little bit faster OC, but still, we can push shader and memory further than your card and that beats your card overall!

No it doesn't. There isn't a 460M that can run as fast as Miahoul's HD5850M.

i7.Asus, do you game while overclocked? I was told it wasn't recommended, but if you're still in safe/cool temperatures (~80c) then wouldn't it be fine?

It's fine. I usually overclock mine with MSI afterburner when I'm playing SC2. I would replace the thermal paste if you plan to do this often. When I replaced my thermal paste on my 460m, the old paste was starting to dry up. This was about a month after I received it. However, the paste on the cpu was still good.

Got to ask why asus chose to change gpu in revised models, also why did alienware do the same change with there m15x? from what I've been reading it seems the 5850/70 arn't so reliable, seems to be heat related, alot of high temp talk from ati owners, difficult to gauge 460m as drivers are new.

Very similarly capable cooling systems. Cards are also very similar, they're both based off of AMD's 5870M. It's a decent comparison to say the least.

It wasn't for performance upgrade but to be able to support 3D over HDMI 1.4.

The 5870 is a great card and I believe they fixed all the issues with the last catalyst update but I have no complaints about the 460m. It overclocks well, play all the games, and remains much cooler than my old notebook(XPS m1730 w/dual sli 8700).

Dude.. check my game clocks.. barely hitting 82 degrees and my game clock is the 460M GTX maxed out. Thats great for being maxed out in COD on High settings for a couple hours.

Sorry to say.. thats not max OC buddy... check my sig for the max OC...
