Hey, all. I'm new to NBR so I hope I'm not doing anything wrong, since some forums have posting restrictions and such. Anyway, I got my G73jh-A2 on launch and I guess over time the thing's GPU-side fan has been getting progressively louder because recently I realized that it was definitely NOT stealth-fightering during gaming. I checked some threads and it looks like GPU temps from 50 to 95 C are reasonable. Yesterday, my G73 suddenly shut down during Bulletstorm. I looked around, asked, and I guess it's probably an overheating issue. I had to be sure though, as after it shut down I could not get it to turn back on until I pretty much removed the battery, though it could just be a coincidence. I played Bulletstorm again earlier today and sure enough it shut down faster than it did yesterday. I checked the temps with MSI afterburner, and it looks like with Bulletstorm the GPU temps were going up to, and maybe higher than, 103 C. I checked another game, the Dragon Age 2 Demo, and played through it. The max GPU temp with that was 101C but mostly about 98C, no shut down =). While typing this, the GPU temps are 58 to 60 C I've uninstalled Bulletstorm, sprayed some compressed air into the vents, and read a little about repasting. Is anyone else having this issue with Bulletstorm on their G73? I know this never happened to me before, and if it's necessary for gaming survival, should I/how do I go repaste this troubled child?

One thing you've forgotten to do is view the STICKIES. There are several G73 repaste thread on there. All info are already posted on there by brilliant nbr members and you might want to check those out.

you may have to repaste my friend...and a quick question...did you have your bottom cover off while you used compressed air on your G73?.....if not I would recommend it and spray it out again.....also have you done the vbios update yet?.....if not do this also... :)

whoa, thanks for these fast replies

First off, I did update the vbios, and it decreased my FPS on several games, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled the stock one. It's possible that I didn't use the right updated vbios though... I did not remove the bottom cover, living in a dorm, I'm low on tools as I need to borrow from friends (which I did for the compressed air can), but I'll do that soon, especially if shutting down happens in more games.

Yes, I'm sorry, I realize now that I don't need to crowd this forum with already-answered questions. I was just hoping more a full set of options and I don't feel comfortable ripping open my notebook, and I'm pretty reluctant to RMAing, still, I'll be sure to read up those.

You can get an RMA from Asus, and take it to a local ASP site. This way you'll not have to ship it and you can inspect it when picking it up that everything is OK.

thank you! I did just as you recommended and my temps did drop a bit, but I'm still not completely comfortable (I need this baby to run my some Witcher 2).

I'm heading to California in a few weeks, and I've found a few ASP shops about an hour away from where I'm staying, it's a trip but based on how long they take, I hope I can just get it done in a day, what's the cost on these kinds of things btw?

Are you using BIOS 211 or 213? If not upgrade to those and your temps will come down also. It increases the fan RPM for better cooling. If that still doesn't help then your only solution is to re-paste the GPU. You can do it yourself or send it away. If want to see what is involved in doing it yourself click on the link in my signature... Newb's guide to repasting.

I've already read through your awesome repasting guide, and I really don't think I can pull it off  . The second time it overheated was actually with the 213 bios, so I'm planning on repasting, though I don't quite understand how the process goes when you do it at a shop...

Then sending it away is your only option.

    A) RMA it to Asus directly. Call the 1800 number on the website, tell them it is overheating, and then send it away and they'll fix it. Yours has a 2 year warranty so they should pay for the shipping both ways. Hopefully it will go to the Fremont CA facility which is pretty good, there a lot of horror stories about the Indiana one.

    B) Take it to an Asus authorized repair center like Chastity said, hopefully will fix or they will send it away. I would try this route first. If there are no repair centers near you then send it away.

I want to take it to an Asus Authorized Repair Center, I've found one that's not too far. I mean, repasting not a a big deal right? A shop should be able to just get it done without much hassle... The very informative guide you sent (thanks for that :) ) doesn't say anything about service time or the presence of any costs when taking it to a shop but I'm guessing this is largely dependent on the place.

LOL Yeah, in theory. I called one, they'd have to do a full diagnostic and it'd take them a week to "repair" it. I told them I just wanted it repasted, could they do it same-day, and they said "not a chance, we've got so many other things, and we'd still need to do a diagnostic - if it wasn't just the paste, you'd blame us for not doing our job". To which I said no, I just wanted it repasted. 7-10 days. Business days.

    Crap, really? :(
Wow, that's ridiculous, understandable, but ridiculous... I don't want to have to pry my baby open if RMAing and finding a shop are virtually the same thing.

Yeah. Well, that was my shop, and there's only one in my province. Maybe you'll have better luck if you've got a few options.

Honestly though, it's not too hard to open up yourself, if you go slow.

More concerned about reassembly myself, that and breaking something.

lol too true. Disassembly is easy. Reassembly isn't too hard if you go slow. There are several threads about it, and I think it's a worthwhile experience as well.
