Yesterday my G51J crashed while I was surfing the net and now everytime I turn it on it goes through the first ASUS screen with the lil fire thing and then it jus goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left... Any suggestions on how to fix this without completely reinstalling? Just askin bc I dont have a recovery disk and my Windows product key has been rubbed off the sticker.

Does it just reboot? From past experience mine did this when I had a corrupt/failed hard disc drive and it was unreadable.

I managed to do a factory reset but it did not run right and I had to replace the HDD and that fixed it. Can you hear the HDD spinning when you fire it up? Can you access safe mode or get into the repair or recovery facility?

Although you dont have a recovery disc you can create one in Windows which is always a good idea.

You should have a built in factory reset however you may need to turn it on in F1 setup I think you hold ALT and F8 or F9 during boot.

The only menu I have been able to get into is the BIOS menu. Thats as far as it goes. Will the ALT+F-key still work?

You should try a windows CD (see http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html) and try the startup repair option, see How To Easily Repair Windows 7 Boot Problems Using Startup Repair

If that doesn't work, you can use a partition utility to copy the recovery partition from your internal hard drive onto a usb stick or hard drive directly. Then boot from that and you will be able to factory restore. Before you do that make sure to transfer your files onto another disk, since they will be erased by the recovery utility.

I think your filesystem is damaged and you likely need at least a startup repair + disk check (chkdsk) to get back into working order.

If that doesn't work you get into damage control mode where you use a livecd to copy your data off the hard drive and then get the recovery partition copied to an external disk that you can boot from.

You can also try F9 at boot if you are willing to blast the whole computer away and factory restore. It might work, I'm not sure from what you've said really.

You'd be better off with a windows CD and startup repair. I think your system is salvageable.

I have no way of telling you if F9 will actually work, sorry.
