I purchased my G73Jh-A2 around 3.5 months ago. It has had tons of use (I'd be concerned if I actually saw numbers) including 8-hour+ gaming sessions.
I was very afraid for the first month or so with this computer as I had been reading through the forums about various defects that were only resolved by awful RMA experiences.
The fear would subside but quickly returned each time I installed a new version of ATI Catalyst (currently running 10.7) or a firmware update (still on 209).
I'm happy to report that I have never experienced a GSOD, PSOD, or anything of that nature and can honestly say that this has definitely been one of the best purchases that I've ever made (if not the best). I basically love this laptop more than my unborn child.![]()
I just wanted to write this to maybe alleviate some fear/hesitation that others are experiencing due to what seems to be endless threads of problems... and see if there are others that are very happy with their purchase but just aren't very vocal.
-
I bought my laptop two days and so far it's been so freaking awesome! It has worked perfectly for me. I have gamed, surf, even benchmark on this laptop. I love it, even though I have the BestBuy edition.
-
You don't have TIM issues?
-
Not that I'm aware of (never seems to run too hot or anything).
-
Only time it has ran hot for me is when, I am laying in bed under a blanket. So obviously it's going to get hot. Other than that runs cool while gaming (HoN/CS:S)
-
Holy Crap thats amazing. Its doing EXACTLY what its supposed to do?
-
Thats very nice of you to make this thread. And I hope to other with no problems on their g73 came here and write about it. We se only people wich have troubles that are here. And my g73 is working perfectly since day one. I have one failure though on it and thats webcam. It died after one week and I have no thoughts to ask Asus for help
. Peace
By the way neuro do you have startup problem? Like does it frease at startup when was off overnight or for longer period of time It happens every single time on mine. -
I haven't had any start up freezes in Windows 7 or Ubuntu.
I did do some initial maintenance which only involved removing the Creative software and a lot of ASUS' bloatware (thanks to http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/380681-asus-utility-bloatware-guide.html). -
Only issue I have that seems to be just with my machine, is that my Ethernet port is just SLIGHTLY oversize. I have a small peice of paper wedged under the cat5 cable to hold it in place properly. This is more of an annoyance than anything and before my warranty is up will be sending in for an RMA on it to get it fixed hopefully. Other than that, have had my machine sense march and loving it from minute one!
-
good threat mate.. Rep+
-
I have had my A-3 for almost a month. I haven't had any issues so far. I removed all the bloatware/junk that I didn't need and installed a new wireless card. I am loving this laptop. Forgot to add in, I am on bios 209 and 10.7a...
-
Been using my G73 for 4 months no problems after I uninstalled the creative software.
-
I've had mine since April without problems except this case flex issue. They replaced the top case and it's been fine.
My video drivers do crash occasionally (I'm using the newest ATI drivers), but it's infrequent (never happened during a game( and most of the time it's fine after Windows 7 restarts them. -
me me me!!!
only time i had issues with gsod was when i updated to ccc 10.6
once back to factory default. No issues whatsoever -
No issues here, been using it for a few weeks. Junkware removed, that´s it (all drivers stock, see below).
I´m also happy to report that I got a startup time of about 30 secs +/-1, with the hybrid 4GB SSD
BTW, it seems that quite a few of us (with 0 issues) have new G73s. I´m beting it is no coincident. -
-
. Naw, I doubt that EVERY machine from the first batches have problems, just that alot of the people posting here with problems seem to have from the older batches (or inflicted it themselves?).
-
Just to let you guys know that Asus is working on a fix for the GSOD issues with the ATI reference Cats, so if you have stability issues with your G73, keep checking the Asus Gaming Notebooks subforum for updates.
(I'm a beta tester for Asus G73JH model regarding this issue) -
I have had my BB g73-05 for about 4 months and no problems at all. Very happy. Great lappy.

we had about 10 returns out of over 1000 sold for hard issues and a few more for no reason what so ever. It is higher then i would like (less then 1% is what i like). Vast majority of the problems were soft. the only real hard problem was psod which was semi inherent but seems like it went away in recent months. This forum has an ability to blow things way out of proportion, way way out of proportion.
-
yah, after I updated the vbios haven't had a single problem
-
Tho seriously, you probably just have sheep for customers. Just imagine if Hellcry was your customer! -

Add me to the list of those people possible affected by the poor thermal paste on the GPU, Running furmark causes my laptop to shut down after about 10-20 minutes hitting 109C
I post earlier in this post about not having a problem with mine Ill have to take that back.
Going to contact Asus tomorrow to find out my options -

this may offend some people but i dont care i dont look at you as a dollar sign. YOUR TEMPS ARE perfectly normal and this is NOT covered under warranty. If asus agrees to take this back and rework it they will send you back a worse product then what you have. The temp range on g73 in furmark varies between 100 and 110 C. What explains the 10c difference?
a few posibilities
1. not all temp nodes are the same. Meaning the temp node is not 100% correct
2. Not all hatpipes are the same. meaning these are manufactured with copper and gas inside and a mixture of other materials. These are not 100% the same
3. most important. not all ambient temps are the same. not all surfaces are the same. meaning depending on your environment you can actually cause the gap in temps running furmark. A 10 degree or less spread in reported temps is not a cause for concern it is NOT even a minor anomaly. It is actually nothing turned into hype and fear on this forum
I have received enough calls from people who read this forum and run the tests, worry them selves to death and call to complain. STOP THIS NONSENSE! Your laptop IS NOT overheating. If it was you would know it. -

that can happen. i had a few that were overheating. one of them had a loose nut on the gpu heatsink. another had a broken ancor which caused the hatsink to be loose. It is not inherent. does it restart or just poof and off? if it is overheating it should not allow you to power back on until some time later

here, i havent had any problems with my g73 which could be attributed to the g73 itself. the only problems i got over time were related to the retarded windows 7....
but my unit was very new, like assembled in june or something. just bought it in late july. -
i just bought my BBY g73 a week ago, and no issues whatsoever. probably helped that it was a refurb.
-
My machine is problem free, mine was the very first batch sold on Newegg, February 9th. Problem free, except for keyboard lag with the touchpad enabled. I don't care though, I didn't purchase a gaming DTR to use the touchpad.
-
So i know i posted here before that i don't have any issues but i've stumbled onto a minor issue
occasionally, i get a corrupt mouse icon on my second monitor. Google says it's a common issue between windows 7 and ATI driver -
I've had no noticeable problems with mine either. A few minor quibbles incidents occoured though:
- Immediate bluescreen when I ran a GPU diagnostic program. Apparantly it tried to access something it shouldn't
- I miss about 1 keystroke every 200-300 characters I type. But then again I'm not really using the touchpad anymore, so I could probably just disable it to rid myelf of that issue.
- Windows is starting significantly slower than it did at it's best. But I am quite sure that that is because at the moment I'm playing one game very heavily (curse you dragonage) and loading up the iso in daemon which is about 8 gigs has probably hogged up the space in my SSD part of my hybrid drive.
- The fan lets out a small sigh once in a while. Kind of weird, but I haven't seen anything weird in temps or anything. So at least for now it's more of a curiousity than a problem. -
I would be lying big time if I said everything was sunshine and daisies with the G73. Issues I've had -
FN+ESC causes freezing: Very minor issue that I would have never known about if I never read it on the forum. To this day I don't know how anyone discovered that, does pressing those two buttons even do anything? Regardless it was one I had that never intruded ever. Went away when I upgraded the BIOS.
Steam freezing my laptop: Did a clean install of Windows 7 and just didn't install the Creative driver. Problem solved.
Game freezing for a split second during gaming: Was mostly my fault for using a slower hard drive for playing games off of, fixed.
Large CPU slowdown on battery: Was a pretty big annoyance in class when my laptop would just take a nosedive in performance. Fixed with BIOS upgrade..apparently.
Touchpad Issues: My biggest issue with this machine. The touchpad likes to go nuts and be completely unresponsive and zoom in/out on whatever I'm looking at on it's own. When it isn't doing that, the scroll function frequently likes to not work. It's annoying, especially when I'm doing work in Sony Vegas. Eagerly awaiting a fix, hopefully it isn't hardware but man the touchpad on this machine is just trash. It feels really nice but it functions like a turd.
As far as gaming goes...the G73 has been perfect. Seriously. I've never had ANY issues with gaming. No freezing (Sans the HDD issue), no PSOD's, no GSOD's, none of that ever. The only reason I even upgraded to the vBIOS was for the hell of it. It does exactly what it needs to so in that respect I've very very happy with this laptop. Even my temps and stuff like have been just right, my G73 doesn't get that hot during hardcore gaming at all. Even my keyboard has been just fine, most of my issues are just ones that occur when I'm doing just regular stuff in Windows 7. So yeah I'm content with it, I just wish the touchpad didn't suck so much. -
Cheers, -

mine runs a bit warm, but my BB G73 has been like a tank. Everytime there is a firmware update, I run the update, saying to myself, "If I brick it, I'll just walk into BestBuy and return it, and get one of their M11X machines...". Each time I finish the updates, and still have the G73... I even upgraded the vBios just to see how it was. Never had any issues on 10.8 before or after. It does look like a repaste is in my future, but there was a LOOSE screw on my GPU heatsink block the other day when I was cleaning the beast (accessable from the bottom panel). It makes me wonder if thats where half the problems people are having on their temps really are coming... loose heatsink blocks are a bad thing...
-
Almost perfect after the vbios, bios, realtek, ati update. One problem though, whenever I try to play some game with the bass boost enabled in the creative software, my game would freeze and the sound effect just keeps replaying in a loop like a broken recorder.
Someone suggested that I turn the sound enhancements off, which I did.. But this isn't really a solution, or is it? -
Turn on CMSS-3D and set to minimal. This will help with the Bass Boost lockups.
-
I thought it was fixed with the new Realtek driver as described in the "Creative Audio Center lock up fix" thread. I don't get Steam lockups anymore with latest drivers. -
It's still a fix for people with some setups.
-
After some BIOS and vBIOS updates, TIM reapplication, and driver updates, I can honestly say that my G73JH-A1 is running absolutely up to my expectations. My only gripes with it are minor and are common to virtually all laptops: keyboard and screen could be nicer. With that said, I love it and I have no further complaints. I happily await our license for the Creative X-Fi MB2 package which will restore my EAX support for older games.
I also upgraded my boot drive to a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT, so my model is like a hybrid A1/A3. -
I've found that a hard crash with the G73 leads me to lockups with the Creative software.
Hardcrashes that result from BSODs (used to get it with the latest Atheros driver with a hacked .inf, but fixed it when I defaulted back to original drivers), or any other sort of hard crash that requires you to hold the power button to turn the laptop off.
After that, I'd get random Windows lockups and hangs and have to uninstall Creative, Realtek, manual reg sweep, re-install, to get it working again.
So far this only happens with the Creative X-Fi software suite posted in that other thread. The original bog standard ASUS Audigy/Creative didn't have this weird thing. But there are noticeable sound improvements with the X-Fi Bass Boost compared to the default software.
Weird, but that's my story. -
-
My G73JH was OK in the beginning but for some reason in the last couple of days things have gone to pot. It started locking up seconds after booting up. I use my machine for business and I can't have it locking up at all. I have now removed all of the sound drivers and am just using the windows ones. It seems stable now. The other extremely disappointing issue is the touchpad. I have tried various drivers but none of them seem to work right. I deleted the synaptic driver and I am now using the windows one and it is wonky as well.
Asus needs to fix the touchpad issue. -
i also never had any kind of SOD.. im very lucky with that.. i do play heavy games though..... last time i did get 90+ on temp while playing bfbc2... then just yesterday.. playing more hours.... i only reach 80+ which is normal.. since im running it on full settings.. im on BIOS 209 ana catalysts 10.8.... but still im gonna do a repaste on my GPU because I wanna get lower temp than what i am getting now...
-
I don't mean to offend anyone, but this is pretty ridiculous. The op felt it was needed to shed some sunshine in the darkness known as the G73 and it couldn't even happen.
Those of you that are speaking of problems (Small or not, they should NOT be there. We aren't buying used or antique equipment.) then proceeding to say the laptop is great are confusing.
I have never seen so many problems in one product without it being recalled by the masses.
I am in the market for a new notebook, and I can tell you that I most likely will NOT be getting the G73 based on all the problems. I probably won't get anything with ASUS or ATI slapped on the side either.
You all should know better than to support a product with issues. You should all be screaming at ASUS and ATI until they resolve every issue.
People without problems on G73Jh?
