I would avoid G73 unless you can very easily return it. For example, you can go to Best Buy and buy one and test the hell out of it and return it with little effort. Don't mail order one.

I've got one that works perfectly now but I went through a few RMAs which cost a couple months of time.

I wouldn't say that ASUS is alone on quality problems though. The world runs around building stuff cheap and quality is one of the first things to suffer. There are going to be issues with every notebook out there, but probably typically less than with the G73.

Which is precisely why I try my best to stay away from big name companies. The bigger the name, the more the problems, and the less they give a .

The alternatives are much worse. I don't want a laptop designed for a 10 year old gleeful over obnoxious lighting. I have no interest in any Clevo notebook, loud fans and look like bricks, literally. Alienware only benefit is CF as the LCD on G73jh is more than good enough for me. I have no patience for the multi-GPU issues, AMD or Nvidia. So for some like me, frankly G73jh is the best option out there.

And I will NEVER buy Nvidia ever again. I will not support who I feel are the #1 culprit in the deterioration of PC Gaming. No thanks. Nvidia far as I'm concerned are even more despicable than Apple with their proprietary garbage.

And once I've managed to get it to work as I want, it's a dream. So yes I will praise this machine and will say I love it! It's the best laptop I've used so far. The screen far exceeds my expectations. With my edited vBios and powerplay hotkeys, I have 100/150 @ .85v and get over 2 hours of battery now for when I'm in class. Even with 800/1125 overclock, my GPU temps are still under 77C and with MLAA now, looks and performance far better than I expected.

So sorry to say, I am proud to be one of the few who loves his G73jh and doesn't regret for even a second buying it.

Good luck in your search for a new notebook. But coming to a Asus forum and calling Asus owners idiots for liking their notebooks is just rude and idiotic. Really find a different forum to patronize their members of what they should and shouldn't do.

When did I call anyone an idiot? You need to take it down a notch and calm down.

What I was getting at is that it is a problem that they expect anyone to have to go through all that work and learn all that stuff just to get something working as it should. Not ASUS or ATI specific even though that is where I have noticed the most problems.

Maybe you should be less defensive as it isn't helping the situation.

I suggest then you go into the other manufacturer forums and see what they say about their models.

As someone who has done a lot of reading before recently mail-ordering a G73JH (On the UPS truck right now in my neighborhood) I can give you a quick perspective as a buyer.

I had been looking for a long time for a good laptop for virtualization and gaming. I needed 16GB and 3 hard drives, and didn't want to pay $5k. That narrowed it down quite a bit, and I think there's a lot of value in this model.

But here is one way I look at it: Higher-end technology and performance in computers is a lot like buying a performance vehicle. They require much more care and feeding because they are designed to push some limits to maximize output.

You aren't buying reliability, you are buying speed. I'm not saying Asus doesn't make a reliable notebook. In my experience (this will be my 3rd Asus notebook) with owning laptops from other major brands, they are about even with the pack.

I think you need to be a little more forgiving with these types of purchases. This is also an enthusiast forum where people intentionally push their technology hard, but are also willing to tinker/fix as they see fit.

I'll let you know when I get to use mine :)

Enjoying mine. Hardware wise it performs flawlessly. Software wise I am still messing with some beta stuff so I don't expect perfection but it's my own doing.

Interesting POV. I tend to agree. I'm willing to be more forgiving of a performance gaming rig than say a very expensive Mac that should work w/o issues for it's premium price.

    Cheers,

I've had mine mine since april... no significant issues at all... besides having gsods after i installed Catalist 10.8 on it... but that was easily solved, and as for the overheating although it is noticeable that paste does degrade over time, mine is still in good shape i believe... might repaste in a coulple of months...

I couldnt be happier with my laptop... one of the best purchases I've made.

I've had my G73JH-A1 since the end of May, and had no problems. I updated the bios/vbios/vdrivers about a month ago just for giggles. The only odd behavior was a freeze after enabling the sub-woofer, but the Creative fix worked perfectly.
Oh, and I didn't like the backpack that came with the A1. :) not enough pockets.

I have installed and run without problems, WOW, D&D, Fallout3, Fallout New Vegas, Counterstrike, Command and Conquer, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Mafia II, Medal of Honor, etc etc

I've had mine for almost 4 months or so now and I've really have yet to have any major issues with the laptop.

Performance-wise, I'm pretty satisfied with it as it runs my games with almost, if not all of the eye candy turned on with almost no hiccup whatsoever.

You shouldn't act like clevo/sager laptops are withought issue. Sager/clevo has really dropped the ball on their recent laptops, the laptops equipped with the 5870 suffer from similar issues, like not being able to downclock when on idle. Except in sager/clevo's case they have dropped support entirely. When the 8800m gtx's came out there where all kinds of issues ranging from laptops not being able to use them at all to requiring motherboard upgrades to do it. Driver issues where among the problems as well.
