    Hi,

I figured I'd start a new thread. I just got my G73 last thursday and was rather ticked off that PWi was locking up the system. I went to PWi support, sent them DXdiag output and their response tonight was to update both audio and the video drivers. I grabbed ATI CCC 10.7 and Realtek R2.51 drivers for Vista/Win7 and installed both and lo and behold the system did NOT lock up!

I did hit a snag of which I am hoping will be rectified in the morning. I am re-downloading the game and will check things then. But the interesting news is that a) it didn't hang, b) I actually heard audio when I initially launched it - was not happening before.

The other stuff I did remove was Power4Gear, Cyberlink and Creative software that was bundled/installed via either the Asus bundled install or Bestbuy (I believe this is part of the OS install package from/for Asus laptops but not totally sure). Anyways, it did hang with just removing them. But since I put the latest audio/video drivers from Realtek/ATI it looks a helluva lot more promising that I won't have to return this to BB before the 14 days are up. Now, if I don't get the dreaded PSOD/GSOD/Hangs I'll be much much happier.

I would say try updating both of these drivers to the latest for those having issues in games/gaming. Can't hurt?!

    Mike

OK, the game loads and runs fine! YES! Now to load some other apps (my audio stuff for one) and see how it runs.

Thats what the newer drivers are for... to fix issues.
But id test if youre having gsods like us or not thoroughly while you can still return it if i were you.
Run furmark for an hour or two if youre comfortable with it and want to know.

Sure, I will do that tonight, can you send me a link to the version most are running and let me know what settings and where in it to set it up correctly like the rest? I haven't used this tool (I've used Prime95/Stress on my desktops when overclocking them awhile ago, I've since reset them to stock as they run fine and want to have them around for awhile (since Intel is apparently changing the mobo game next year some time as they lke to do).

What visual type errors could this induce (for failure) and could it hose the system? I grabbed 1.82 so I thnk I've got the latest to try after I get home from work today. I just don't want to brick the system (well, since in return range it isn't too much of a problem, just would rather not roast a $1200 laptop!).

Just download THESE and install, and run that furmark you downloaded on 1920x1080, xtreme burning stability test, post fx.
It cant brick your system, the only thing it does is task the gpu to 100% so you can see if it will overheat or GSOD - GSOD = Grey screen of death, but it can come in pretty much any colour. Its a liny coloured screen. Youll know when you see it. When you get it just turn the laptop off and back on. Ive done it over 50 times now testing every possibility...
Its just better to find out and see it now than later, so you can still return it.

I don't think I can run it at 1920x1080 since the display only is up to 1600x900 (I assume I'd needed a HD display model in order to run it that high - no BD-Rom for this model I have)? Either way I'll see what it shows for options tonight and will post results hopefully later this evening (9:00PM-ish EST).

[edit] Why do I need to install the beta drivers? And I assume over the 10.7 release ones? Can I safely roll back after or will I need to uninstall 10.7a/reinstall 10.7 after?

I tried it @ 1920x1080 with just xtreme and it ran for maybe 10-20 secs (had dragon then brown SOD (vertical lines like a sheet of paper). Tried it again at lower screen resolution and it went immediately black full screen. Tried above setting + post fx and died within seconds of dragon showing up on screen. GPU-z temps were mid 50's for lower values and 6x for other reading. I saw no RPM on fans and one other was empty as well. So what now? Do I return this and try another one after cleaning off what I installed? I am not planning on overclocking. I can try setting the GPU settings posted elsewhere from 700/1000 to 705/1100 and see if that makes any difference as well. I was hoping this would *run* for at least an hr, can't even get past 20 secs or so.....

I bumped the 2 values via AMD GPU to 705/1100 and it was running when I left for ~20 mins. I come back to GSOD. I am going to try 800/1100 and see if it gets any further. They need to fix this issue if it is driver issues. Well 800/100 didn't fair any better. So this looks like a return maybe? I should run the game and see if it works or what for an extended period (hrs)?

Do you remember what temps you had after 20 minutes?

I was in high 90's in that run maybe. I forget as I've been busy with other stuff and have tried it 3-5 times running it. Not sure how long it actually ran, but I was gone for 20 mins and it was *SOD by the time I got back.

I reverted back to the 10.1 8.683 drivers tonight to see if Perfect World would run (left latest Realtek HD drivers in place) and it did. I will endeavor to get into PWi this weekend for some hrs of play to see how it goes. I ran Driver Sweeper, CCcleaner and finally it apparently re-loaded the original driver (10.1) and the game came up and I was able to set it to 1600x900 resolution (display came back to that too). I am not too concerned with gaming on this as a mainstay. I would like to be able to play PWi, Guild Wars on it (and GW2 when it arrives in November) and will wait for Asus to get off their asses and fix things (seems they are moving forward on the BIOS issue at the least).

But so far it seems pretty solid/stable. We'll see when I do a 3-6hr run in PWi and also get my audio software installed this weekend to check it out. It's not 64 bit yet but people are using it in Win7 and not having many issues (usually their audio interface).

Well right now with 10.1 installed, Realtek 2.51 installed my GPU temp shows 65.0c in it. I loaded in Ableton Live 8.1.1 and 8.1.4 and grabbed latest ASIO4All drivers and it worked ok. No issues yet. I will try and get into PWi monday night since I have till thursday to return it (14 days up then) but so far it seems to be behaving ok. I won't know till I get some hrs into PWi (2-4 hopefully tomorrow evenin) but I also don't have a cooler pad for this yet.

Any ideas on one for this model that won't break the bank, is fairly quiet and well built? I am probably going to fork over the $150 for BB's 1 yr warranty just in case something goes south on it. At least I can bring it to them to have them ship it out for repair.

msoucy: How much air movement do you want? For mine, I wanted quiet over air movement, seeing how well the cooling works already, so I went with a Targus Lap Chill Mat. 2 fans, real quiet, doesn't move gobs amount of air, but helps keep the underside maintain a positive air pressure environment.

Hi, name is Mike btw ;-) and I am foregoing the BB plans as if it has issues I'll send it back to Asus. This isn't a main system so not worried about it gone for repairs (if needed in first year). I actually looked at what I believe is the mat you mentioned (AWExxxxx)? I ordered 2, one for mine, one for my 17" Pavillion going to the g/f soon. And I backed down to 10.1 Asus drivers to see if game ran and it did. Water looks like its raining, could be due to older drivers for video. I may load 10.7 back on later but want to run it tonight to see if I run into any heat issues while playing (need to figure out where I'll run it...maybe on top of desk = won't be bent over on it).

Any other suggestions for me to look into? I removed some of the other software (creative and cyberlink).

Well, on 2nd night of playing PWi, it crashed, BSOD this time and said "can't find boot+mgr" message. I powered it off, back on and hit same message. I removed the 250GB 5400RPM SATA drive and system came back up. I then shut down removed it and system came up. I then put it back in (I don't have the bracket and can't find it at the asus site to order it...nice.) and it seemed to be ok. Strange that it BSOD in-game and wouldn't boot. I doubt it being slower could be the cause. I hope to run it more in the next few days or coming week at the earliest to see if it does it again.

As far as I know I have 10.1 ATI driver for video, R2.51 Realtek audio installed and I can play the game. My audio software seems to load/run ok as well. I need to load Guild Wars onto it next. I've past the 14 return at BestBuy so if something really bad happens I guess I"ll have to RMA it to Asus. Hopefully they will get an update out that satisfies a fair amount of those ticked about these issues. I read reviews and all were glowing so I bought it, then I find out after the fact about these issues.....next time I just have a custom one built (wish they would just gimme the OS + drivers = me happier).
