Hey guys. I'm new here, and just bought my new Asus G73SW, bundled with the 1gb 460m gtx.

I started playing Fallout 3, but I seem to be getting rather disappointing frame rates with ultra settings (16aa, 4ss, 1200 x 900, vsync on, phys x set on read by card...); ranging from 21-42 on the wasteland, with an OC up to 812 for the core.

Now I read that Fallout 3 shouldn't have such a bad rate; from what I was able to read in this thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/602524-steam-doesnt-support-oc.html

    thief1958 states:

I am hitting these low numbers. I updated the drivers recently to the latest bundle; and defraged my disk just in case. Also, I obviously try to minimize OP loadage by closing most stuff before. But i'm still hitting those numbers.

I've had no problems with SF4 and Mass Effect 2; but those are lesser demanding games anyhow, I believe.

Hopefully someone can point towards the right direction!

    Thanks.

    Hi Krelianx,

first you should take into consideration the fact that you're on the crippled gtx460m which is not what Thief or I have.

Our card is the full one which has 192bit bus width and 1,5gb of vram.

So the performance he's talking about cannot be applied to your g73 because the crippled ROPS/bus width (128bit) slows down your gpu about 20-40% depending on the situation.

Also you have the best buy version right? I suppose you're running a 1600*900p screen. Its normal that you cant quite get those framerates, but hold on, we may try something.

First be sure that your gpu drivers are updated: latest whql are 280.26. You will need a modded inf to get them working, but chastity made a ready-to-go package available here:

    http://pcaudio.org/stuff/280.26-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql-modinf.exe

Get them, unistall completely the current drivers, run driver sweeper AFTER the unistall in Safe Mode (during boot hit F8 then select Safe Mode) then install these newer ones.

Driver Sweeper needs to be launched and you need to select Chipset/Display Nvidia. Then hit Analyze then Clean. Reboot to normal windows then.

Its important you run Driver Sweeper in safe mode otherwise you will not be able to completely unistall the drivers.

If your gpu is now updated, go to techinferno and download ThrottleStop from our UncleWebb.

You dont need to do anything, just launch it and turn it on. Leave it running and launch Fallout 3 to see what kind of performance you get now, and report back.

Also OC a bit more. You can reach the safe OC speed of 800/1600/1600 without problem, try it.

Excellent Kingpinzero. Did as stated and got my fr up to 36-55, and 28-50 in 16aa. I had no idea I was running on the crippled version of the card, which sucks to know. Again, thank you a lot! I've been overclocking the card to 810/1620/1600, and it seems fine. I might try out to go up to 810 or 815 in a bit.

One further question, does it make a difference whether I run throttlestop in performance or game mode?

    Domo arigato! -_-

hey kingpin.. i read your post abt the drivers.... Are you saying that simply downloading the new drivers and doing the clean install in the driver menu will not yield optimal performance? and that using the driver sweeper + modded driver will give better results? I'm still new to this stuff will ur method give better performance in games are is it only for ppl who r experiencing problems... Also what is this throttlestop u speak of???

ps.. dont feel obligated to answer all my questions, i'm grateful for any answers u provide, im still tryin to get the max performance outta my g53jw

Kung_Lao; I had the latest bundle of drivers installed, but after I uninstalled them and performed the cleanup and then reinstalled with the files indicated above I experienced a considerable performance boost.

Kung_lao, krelianx already answered to your question :) follow the steps I posted back with driver sweeper to install the newer drivers.
