What happens if I take the practically new 500GB 7200 out of my old computer with all my data on it and placing it the primary socket in my new G72jw-xr1 and the new one that come with the computer and placing it in the secondary socket? Keep in mind they will both have windows 7 on them.

That should be possible as long as you have the necessary hardware to place a secondary drive in the machine. It will boot from the primary slot (in this case your old hard drive) and you can use the secondary drive for more storage. At that point, you can wipe the OS off of the second drive to free up more space.

I tried doing that type of thing with two HP laptops recently, and the problem you might run into is that Windows won't boot up because the installatons/activations are wired with the hardware. So when you change the computers -- if your cpu/ram set up is different... heck it might even have its own unique signature code -- you might have to reinstall windows for it to work. If you put it in the secondary slot of the computer you may be able to boot windows from the 2nd slot (choose from boot menu)

It ought to load, but you'll have a bunch o' drivers that need to be installed later. The only problems really, are dropping a x64 install in an x86 machine, or missing SATA drivers...
