Hey guys, just a quick question here

I own a G-73 From Best Buy, and when I max out Dragon Age 2, FRAPS tells me I average 25-30 FPS, but to me the gameplay seems smooth enough, even in combat. I also downloaded the high resolution texture pack, which has a 1GB video card as the minimum requirement.

My question is, what is considered a 'playable' FPS rate? I hear movies are done at 24 FPS or something like that, so I'd imagine for a game it would be a little higher (27 FPS?)

Is there a 'definite' answer to this?

haha, playable is whatever your comfortable with!!! Playable is a very user defined term.... however to me playable is 30+ fps, that ensures constant smoothness in the game, becuase for me personally it really bothers me when a game is only smooth until it hits a little action and then gets really laggy. 30+ is the ideal range that developers shoot for when making console games, however it seems PC gamers tend to like theirs a little higher, but 30 fps is great for maxing out dragons age :D

For a G73 to max out DA2 at full HD at those frames that is very good. Remember its a laptop card not a desktop its practically a chipboard with restricted cooling and amazingly it runs very very well.

I found that with my 8700m gt sli setup 25 was acceptable minimum however you do really want 30+ constant and not to drop below that or you can notice the slowdown and it can affect your gameplay. You also do not want your frames jumping 10-20 at a time or this can screen tear or cause lag.

30+ Crack open a beer sit back and relax :)

60+ The heavens will open and Angels will fly down and greet you :D

Fraps is going to make you lose some FPS, too.

Only if you're recording. To me, anything nearing 30FPS gets uncomfortable for me. 60 for a modern game is ideal for me, 100 for older games.

In this instance, the JH outperforms the JW/SW in Dragon Age 2 with current drivers. I have DX11 / Very High enabled with Occlussion/Blur/Depth disabled and High Textures enabled, 4xMSAA and 8x Aniso and I get 25-30 fps. :D Dropping down to High yields 45-60 fps.

Chastity is DA2 a good game or more 'medium'?

I have played the first and found it ok.

    Hey,
This is an interesting insight; since the ASUS G73JH predates the JW and especially the SW (with its' i7-2630QM processor). Is there a specific reason why the JH outperforms the JW/SW in Dragon Age 2?

    Thanks,

As Chastity mentioned drivers are more up to date for the JH and they haven't been this good for a long time 11.4 flies with all my games with my 5870m.

I totally agree the SW is a fine model and Sandy FTW although the JW's 460 GTX cannot really be compared to the 5870m in many areas most importantly that Bioware based Dragon Age 2 on ATI models.

Is that with or without the high res texture pack you can download?

    Hey,
Does that mean it is worth getting an ASUS G73JH presently despite the release of the newer G73JW/SW models?

In short, if we are considering quality as a function how fast (FPS wise) and how high ("max" setting wise) the G73JH can run games - is the G73JH still a better buy then the G73JW/SW?

    Thanks,

    -NRUserII

ManuelG mentioned that the upcoming nvidia pack should improve DA2 performance. As for my JH performances, my numbers for fps are all over the place since AMD just keeps pumping out newer 11.4 builds! I've lost some fps in High settings, so I'll have to run my tests again... feh. Unless it was the 1.01 patch.

What software are you using to see FPS while playing aside from FRAPS?

Try playing on a laptop IGP, that overheats and throttles for 2-3 years. Anything nearing 25 fps is damn good for me, but I guess it really depends what your used to.
