Hello guys! I have been reading this G73 forum for a LONG time and gleaning all the information I could about the Grey Screens I kept getting when I first bought this laptop. You guys have been a great help! And I have been with you guys those days when we were all waiting for the fabled vbios update that would fix our gray screen problems.
I haven't been keeping up with this forum the past week or so because I've had college, but I see a very amazing topic by Gary Key getting rid of our "GSOD blues"!
However, I am a little uneasy about "flashing" as you guys call it the vbios and updating the regular bios too because I feel like I will break my laptop and be SOL in college. It's also stated that this fix isn't official as of yet.
My question is, should I just wait for the vbios update on the main website? When will it be release? I THINK I read somewhere here it would be released sometime next week on the asus website but I don't have a solid memory to substantiate this claim.
Also, when it does come out, will I need to update anything else? Or change settings? Note: I haven't really changed much of this laptop and it's more or less the same as the day I got it.
I'm really sorry if this is redundant or asked too much on the forum![]()
P.S. When you guys say things like 800/1100 for video cards, what does that mean exactly? I see this fairly often but never really found a solid definition yet.
Another note: The grey screen of death is well... grey with like stripes right? I have gotten those but also I get the white screen of death and sometimes my computer just goes black after logging in. This is all normal for the driver issues discussed here right?

Even if you wait, you will have to flash your bios and your vbios, causing this worry right now to just be postponed. If you aren't confident wait for the official and find someone who knows how to do these so that you will be less panicy about what may happen. You will not need to change any settings after this is done unless of course you had custom BIOS settings beforehand.
When people talk about 800/1100 in reference to their video cards they are talking about the timing speeds of their cards....the G73 by defualt is set to a max of 700/1000 but you can "overclock" the video card to go faster in an attempt to boost gaming or 3d performance. DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU ARE INEXPERIENCED! You can cause problems with your GPU and possibly void your warranty. It will also increase the temperature the computer operates at. -
Yup, good response. Basically ASUS hasn't posted the vbios yet, and might not for awhile. Chances are they never will release it, and they'll just flash it internally when you RMA it, to avoid mass G73 brickings.

Once you have a bootable flash drive, the updating process is pretty simple. For the video BIOS, copy over atiflash.exe, the video rom file, and the .bat file. Boot to the USB drive. At the command prompt, just type the name of the .bat file. When it asks for a reboot, turn off the machine, wait 10 secs, and restart.
For the motherboard vBIOS, copy the rom file to the drive, and restart the machine. Spam F2 until you get the BIOS menu. Use the EZFlash utility, and load the rom file on your flash drive. Restart when done. -
If you like you can try this modified vBios that Gary released.
- For Idle/2D clocks it is 200/300 @ .90 volts.
- For battery it's 200/300. The voltage is .90.
- For video playback, it's 500/1000 at .90 volts.
- For normal gaming it is 700/1000 @ 1.15V
OverDrive is unlocked. So if you go to CCC and you'll see OverDrive now. Click the "KEY" button to unlock.
- If you touch the memory clocks, it will permanently set the memory at that clock, when in power mode. So when in 2D it will be 200/"whatever memory clock you set"
- If you just set the core and leave memory alone, memory will continue to dynamically change. So for me, 200/300 2D, then change to 500/1000 for videoback, and for gaming 800/1000. You can see all of this changing for yourself dynamically.
- If you decide to overclock the memory. Just set a profile for Battery Mode and for Performance Mode. You switch to battery mode for 2D and back to performance for 3D.

I work on the stock bios & 9.12 drivers and can play every game I want
So... I'm also wondering if I should update or not -
The new vBIOS is for all Asus G73JH cards, so I would upgrade.
Please excuse my ignorance (vbios)
