New to the forums, hello everyone. I was just looking for some updated info on how to update everything, bios, vbios, and video drivers. I havnt done it since i first bought this laptop when it was released and had such a pain updating and not getting the gray screen that i havnt done it since. All the threads i found were from 2007 besides one that was only for video drivers, and that said dont do until the rest has been updated. I have basically had this laptop sitting in the corner for about a year and a half at least, and my gf wants to play some newer games and if its a new game it seems to shut down after an hour of playing even plugged in, read that bois updates could fix this. im on video bios 012.017.000.004.035992, Driver Version: 8.683.0.0, BIOS Version: G73Jh.206.
Thanks for the help and info in advanced,
    Steven

Start here by selecting the operating system you have installed in the laptop: ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS G73Jh

Then download whatever it is you want to update. All of the downloads come with .exe files, so just run those utilities/installers and reboot when prompted. :)

As for the shutdown, you may be experiencing overheating, so check your temps using a thermal monitoring program.

Thanks for the info, so I will have no problems and that's the best way? Looking at some of the stickied threads I see that I should never use exe, only flash drive method for bios, and I should always get drivers from ati. But if that method works and is just as good I will gladly do. So I guess my question is, is that as good? As reliable? And has anyone used it and not ended up trouble shooting bsod and gray screens? And for over heating, what is my best option, repasting? Like I said this thing is basically brand new never used so not much experience on it, I mostly just do desktops, but I have never seen such a touchy laptop as this one, out of the box gray screens of death... any and all info is greatly appreciated

Safest way to update BIOS is put the file for 213 on a FAT32 formatted Flash drive and use the utility built into the BIOS. If you want to use the latest ATI drivers from the AMD site (recommended) Video BIOS Version: 012.020.000.032..... needs to be installed first. (this is known as Chastity's VBIOS)
If you are not overheating this should fix gray screens. Also install Hwinfo64 (or 32) and look at sensors to determine temps and to verify that your fans are working (use the RPM reading not the one that indicates 30%, this is not accurate).

JOSEA beat me to it. :)

There are a lot of thermal monitoring programs out there, and even the BIOS setup main screen should give you some indication of where the system stands. All the GUI-based programs do is relay that same data but from Windows (or whatever OS you're using).

I personally haven't had a problem flashing the BIOS via the executables, but sometimes you won't even obtain a .exe to do so. Go with JOSEA's advice on flashing (just don't do it in public :p).

It seems to me that your GPU might be overheating, the reason that causes your hard-shutdown experience. If you're not confident on dismantling the whole beast, you might want to ask Chastity's assistance on getting a reliable service from an Asus Service Center near you. You'll have to shell out some cash to pay for the service in this option though.

Or just blow out your cooling vents. :) I'd suggest updating to 213, and update your VBIOS. My old Apps and Driver page should still be working since I updated the links to a new server.

heres a link just incase. G73/74/53 Series Driver and Application Reference

as for cleaning your vents i would recommend getting an air can from ebay or amazon etc. take the bottom cover off the laptop. then spray the air can in short 1-3 second bursts into each vent. you should see lots of dust come out from under the laptop. hopefully your temps should improve. gl.
