    I'm running Windows 7 on a G74SX. Spec's:
    - 120hz matte screen
    - GTX 560M 192bit
It's basically the highend version with a SSD 160GB and all that good stuff :)

The problem: rather than smooth gradients between colors, the graphics are "stepped" or striated. ie. rather than a grayscale gradient smoothly transitioning from black to white, it steps through a series of gray tones from black to white.
Using Nvidia controlpanel, I can change the color quality from High (32-bit) to Medium (16-bit) and this affects the gradient, but is still not a smooth transition. This problem affects every application/game I run on the laptop.

I have learned that it is not a screen issue, as I've hooked the laptop up to several different monitors. All advanced screen settings are and always has been set to system standard.

There is a built in windows calibration tool for color etc. It's not the best but it's free.

From the command prompt type in "calib" and run the tool.

I've tried to mess around with this too. Doesn't fix my problem.

You may want to try re-installing the GPU drivers. Also, was your 560m overclocked at all?

EDIT: Is the 74sx a 128 or 192-bit width? I thought the 74sx was like the 53sx in terms of the shortened GPU bus?

It could be the fact that I overclocked it :/ I can't believe I didn't think of that! Have I partly broken my graphics card now? :S Damnit! You can get the G74SX with eighter 128 or 192, if you had payed attention to the spec's in the OP you would see that I got 192 :)

EDIT: It is weird that a small OC would mess up everything though! The card never got any hotter than 61C when playing cryisis2/bf3. Swapping between the different nvidia drivers doesn't change anything (currently using the beta driver for bf3 beta.)

Many people incorrectly assume it's 192-bit just because the card can support it. Also, just want to cover all your bases.

What happens when you try setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz?

Edit: It would also help to know what you have tried, what clocks you are/were running, etc.

Setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz doesn't change anything. Trust me, I've tried close to every setting I could in the nvidia controlpanel. Also, I ran some settings I saw others used for benchmarking: GPU: 952 MHz, Memory: 1710 MHz using NVIDIA Inspector. Anyways, it says the Bus Widt is 192 Bit, so I assume it's 192 bit...

This used to happen to me on my G73JH, like the exact same thing. It turned out that updating drivers fixed the issue, but the temp fix was always switch to 16-bit then back to 32-bit. I'm not sure if you've tried to update drivers, or revert back to old ones that didn't have this issue, but give that a try.

Neighter of these options seems to fix my problem :( When changing to 16-bit, the gradient looks even worse and when changing back it's back to the where I started. I've tried all drivers even beta drivers Nvidia currently offers to GTX 560M

Naits: It just dawned on me that some G74 3D models shipped with 40-pin LCDV cables, and maybe this is your issue. I would have it RMA'd and confirmed/fixed. I cannot help you directly since you're not in North America. Your 3D screen requires 50-pin cables.

Okay :) I understand. Thanks for your patience and time. I will return it, but I will let them keep it. Last time I am buying anything "Asus" ever again.

Just to clearify; I am not being a whiney #@%&! . I had enough problems with that notebook to throw most people of the edge. To find out that what I get from Asus when I pay them $3000, LITERALLY is a faulty unit, just makes me hope I never have to touch an Asus computer again :)

Well, this is why I was hired, to be able to raise the bar on ASUS support and help before radical things are done. Just let me know if you want to get the trackpad replaced.
