I have a G73JW-XA1, Asus ROG laptop.
When I first purchased this system, I was under the impression that the webcam would be high quality, 2.0 megapixels and what not. But using the webcam on Skype, I've received complaints from a lot of my friends whom I've video chatted with, complaining of my webcam being really poor quality... not being able to see my face at times, etc.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, and no difference.
Is the webcam in this machine just inherently bad?

Hello,
Have you removed the clear plastic covering over the camera? I know every notebook I've owned had some kind of plastic covering over it, that made the pic quality look pretty poor.

The webcam is really low quality. If you purchased this system with the purpose of having a high quality webcam, return it now. Since the G73 has absolutely fantastic specs for the price, they had to cheap out in a lot of other places people wouldn't care about so much.
An alternative is getting a dedicated USB webcam, but that kind of defeats the purpose of getting the laptop in the first place. -

Not used web cam on here yet in a online chat but one thing that does effect it is your connection speed if your speed is not up to the task others we see a jerky picture and blurrs with movment on your end. But on the other hand 2 megapix is not in the high end of camera spec.

If you notice my "avatar" it is a pic taken with the G73JH Internal Cam and the LifeFrame software - Do you consider that "avatar" pic of mine to be poor quality? I don't see any blur or wash-out - I can say that it is 10x's better then my wifes HP Netbook cam and several other manufacturers web cams that I compare it with.

The image quality is okay for me, but my concern is more about the lag of the image updating. It just seems like it can't give a smooth image to the local screen, not sending over the internet at all. I mean, on my mac the image using PhotoBooth is very smooth. Using LifeFrame it's very laggy.

I used the webcam today for a 30 min MSN chat and found it okay. Maybe it's because I've never used a HD cam before so I can't compare it. Not a bad cam, though.

it depends on quite a lot of factors, just like camera.
especially the lighting condition and your connectivity speed -
For me it has nothing to do with connectivity speed. Lifeframe has a local loop, where it just shows on the screen what is on the camera.

Notebook webcams work best in natural light, not so well with artificial and dark ambient lighting.
At low light conditions the sensor will drop the FPS and quality to compensate. -
the webcam wouldn't be so bad if you can lower the resolution. No idea if you can do that kind of stuff on skype or not.
When I'm recording myself, I found for example by using Dubfx, and ffdshow 64 bit, at a low res (480p), in avi format, it turns out rather well. -
hey folks.
Got the g73jh-b1 model a few weeks ago, love the machine, no problems except for the webcam. It works but the quality or more importantly the refresh/framerate is really bad. I've only tested it on Lifeframe. Maybe I should be trying with morelight?

there is something strange with that camera
have you noticed when you are on a video call its turning off and on very quickly (you can notice that by the led near your camera)
and sometimes picture goes from dark but lots of frames to light poor frames
and btw have you installed virtual camera or just the camera driver -
Lowering the resolution to the lowest setting (below 320x240) made for nice framerates. I still find it hard to believe that our computers would have difficulty processing a 2MP frame in real time...come on. How do higher quality external webcams do it?
Did ASUS put the webcam on a USB 1.1 bus or something? It doesn't make any sense. -
i think g73jh series should have been included with HD camera
that would be awesome
