Bascailly what the title says. I need to know this because this depends on if I buy this laptop or not. Also, if I cannot do so on this model, is there another model that allows me to?

Yiddo makes an excellent point in the above thread:

The G74 is a great laptop with great performance but you will do better (albeit pay more as well) to go with an MSI or Clevo/Sager.

I don't believe MSI models have removable GPU's but I think Clevo/Sager models are. I'm not 100% sure though.

Almost all MSi gaming laptops have removable MXM type GPU's and are upgradable.

Impossible. You guys are forgetting that the 560m is integrated in to the mobo and there is neither an MXM connector nor an ExpressPort.

Alright. I was just asking because I had fallen absolutely in love with the ASUS G74SX... until I read that it was not upgradeable. Oh well.

I am partial to the MSI, mostly because it does not have the same excellent build quality, and it does have those retarded flashing lights at the back.

So in other words, there is absolutely no way, or it is very hard to, upgrade the CPU on the G74SX. Thanks guys.

Does anyone have any experience with the MSI Laptops, and do they have good build quality?

Also, the model I was looking at was this one:
    MSI GT780DX-277US w/ Core i7-2670QM, 8GB, 750GB, DVD+/-RW, 17.3in Full HD, GeForce GTX 570M, Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit at Memory Express
Should I get it or should I go for a SAGER/CLEVO. And is the GPU on the Sager upgradable?

I just wanted to be able to still use my Laptop for games 5 years down the road, I was trying to say.

I'd bet that what you will be able to sell a loved on and cared for laptop in 2-3 years will more than offset the cost of the new video card.

I have a G74SX being delivered tomorrow and if it's good to me, I'll baby it and sell it for 60-70% what I paid for it and buy whatever the new best bang for the buck is at that time.

I'd price out a 570 or 580 equipped rig from a reseller here (or your choice of) and have fun til it's time to retire it.

I got so tired of the upgrade bug....

No laptop anywhere on the market today, is made for that. Absolutely none.

It does not matter what laptop you buy, if you are trying to make plans for it lasting 5 years, sorry to say but you need a reality check.

Even if you COULD upgrade the GPU, in 5 years time the CPU & mobo & RAM would be heavily outdated. You are looking for a laptop with the ability to replace each and every component when it becomes obsolete and replacing it with a newer component... Just buy a PC? Build yourself a PC and save like $500?

Asus is a great value for a performance laptop. They are not top of the line but they are reasonably priced and excellent performers. If you want upgradable, you'll have to go with a Clevo, MSI, or Alienware. I would say that the Clevo/Sager is very modular. The Alienware is easy to upgrade too but not as good as a Clevo. The MSI is reasonably upgradable. Laptops just aren't modular enough for a five year lifespan. The motherboard needs to be changed to use the latest chipsets for the latest CPU and GPU. Nobody sells motherboard upgrades for any of these laptops. That's your limiting factor. The best you can hope for is a future upgrade of the GPU and that will get you a little further down the road but the current laptop with the latest GPU will always be faster than your one or two year old laptop even if you upgrade to the same GPU.
