i wasn't sure where to post this to be nice.

is there better software for playing back blu-ray movies?

the powerDVD 9 that came with my G73JH is terrible!

it crashes on me if i try to do something something else on my computer while it's playing

it randomly pops up during a movie saying it has to download an update to play the movie (as in i'm halfway into a movie then it interrupts the movie )

if i have my laptop connected to my 23 inch monitor over HDMI and switch the source on my monitor to DVI (if i have to check something on my desktop computer) PowerDVD will complain saying the monitor is not HDCP compatible device and stops playback completely. it seems to freak out when the monitor changes modes...which i don't understand, how would it notice..shouldn't be any different then if i shut the monitor off right? it just stops receiving the HDMI signal.

i can deal with the external monitor issue (it works just fine over HDMI if i don't switch modes) but the crashing and the random "updates" half way through a movie is just poor programming and it drives me insane. then having version 10 shoved in my face every five minutes. ( i remember version 8 doing the same thing on my desktop a while back)

i'm willing to buy something if there is a better alternative. i just have never liked PowerDVD and i can't imagine 10 being any less annoying.

This works great for playing BR/HDDVD's and also integrates into Windows Media Center. Been using it for a few years now.

VLC so far DO NOT have Blu-ray support 'coz the cost of licenses and vlc is free.

Powerdvd which came in the dvd drivers is good enough to reproduce videos, but the skin is ugly and not to much intuitive.

Can you guys help me? I dl'ed the PowerDVD 9 that Chastity linked. I received my HT-LG-ST C10L bd-rom/DVDRW in the mail yesterday. I popped it in. I have a blu-ray movie in the drive. PowerDVD won't play it. I can see it. I see all the folders and whatever on the disk. I removed PowerDVD and installed WinDVD 2010 instead. It won't play the movie either. PowerDVD was giving a "Your disc drive does not supportthe playback for this content".

Is there a firmware upgrade I have to find? Is it because I don't have some HDMI piece installed or something? I have zero experience with blu-ray other than playing them on my PS3.

    It says:
    HL-DT-ST_BDDVDRW_CT10L__________________YC07____

It didn't want any updates. I tried to update it. I have since removed PowerDVD 9 and installed WinDVD 2010 instead. WinDVD says "Media not supported" when I try to choose the BD-Rom with the movie in the tray.

What movie is this? Have you tried other Blu-ray movies?

This link doesn't look good for you. YC07 is the only firmware for that drive that did not work.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried it. It won't update my drive. I bet it would work fine, but the software is refusing to attempt. I had read the thread you linked as well. I guess I will try AnyDVD. I'm very disappointed in this drive. It came from Hong Kong. It took three weeks to get. It would cost at least twenty bucks to send it back and it's only worth $68.

I have a UJ141 you can try. If it works, keep it; just send me that busted one and I'll try to get it working. PM me and we can work out shipping.

That is seriously cool. I appreciate the offer. I tried AnyDVD HD. That solves the problem. The movie was Transformers (The first movie). It plays perfectly with AnyDVD running in the background. I will keep looking for a firmware update.

Thank you for both the help and the offer. :)

No problem, I sometimes have surplus stock. If you need it let me know.

There should really be a warning about that model with that firmware. People have had issues since 2008 and I bet the seller knew it. They should at least credit part of the transaction.

    Cheers,

Check your region setting. Maybe the drive from Hong Kong is set to the wrong region, and you need to change it to US/Japan Region 1

I did. I set it in device manager and in the playback software. The firmware on this drive just can't play movies. I sent an email to eeshop to see what they will say. I requested that they provide me with WA06 firmware or replace the drive with one that has that firmware. Mine has YC07 and you cannot play movies with that firmware.

I'm trying to find model numbers of laptops that might have the drive factory installed... maybe they released a firmware updater. There are some HP laptops with the drive but I haven't tracked down a firmware update on HP/Dell/Asus/whoever that will update the drive yet.

I'm kinda glad I bought a model with a BD drive already. This issue would have me gnawing on leather.

This was quoted from the G73JW lounge. I have downloaded and installed this and can say that this performs better than PowerDVD 9 for me. I was experiencing stutters with PowerDVD 9 in such movies as Ironman 2, Transformers 2, and any other high graphic rendering Blu Ray movies. I havent experienced any stutters in said movies with Roxio Cineplayer BD. YMMV but it is working for me on my G73JW.
