Hey guys on friday i preordered the asus G73JH from GenTech with ICD added on both the CPU and GPU. This is actually my first notebook purchase which will be replacing my 5 year old Dell dimension 4600. My big question is i see all these people using chill mats on their laptops and was wondering if getting one is really necessary or needed? if so which would you reccomend?

In addition i am purchasing this laptop for downloading music, online poker, watching blurays on the go and for playing mostly blizzard games. I play WoW now and intend to be playing StarCraft 2 as well as Diablo 3 when they are released.....This setup i am purchasing should be more than enough to max both SC2 and D3 out I would imagine yes?

should be more than reasonable to play close to maxed if not maxed. As for cooling pad, were not sure how the internal cooling is for this machine yet, so we dont know 100% if its necessary or not. Hopefully we can learn that more over the next week or so if Asus releases any good information pertaining to this machine at CES2010.

Jeffrey, the actually computer design will not be released until CES2010, the model you are seeing on the websites is probably the G72, which is waht the chassis is based off of. But im sure it will have a similar look, but its own uniquness to set it apart from the rest though!

How would you know? Diablo 3 is coming out in like 2years and starcraft 2 is coming out in like a year or so. Things can change.
We can't really say right now if it's going to be able to max out diablo 3 and Starcraft 2. Even though the new ati gpu is a "beast", we can't say for sure.
I am currently using antec notebook cooler right now and am very happy with it.

im just speculationg right now Euisungkim, obviously no one knows until the actual release of the games come. I too, am highly anticipating SC2 and D3 to be released in 2010. I appologize for not stating that it was personal speculation.

To be honest, it will probably be able to max D3 and SC2 based on Blizzard's traditional offerings. Blizzard tends to create games that can run on a very wide range of hardware without compromising gameplay, and I wouldn't be surprised if D3 and SC2 demonstrate the same.

They just put pictures of the previous model. After ces2010 we'll get a chance to take a look at the real picture of this beast.

Yes they have been doing that but we gotta look at the time difference. Sc2 maybe, but d3? Idk. It's 2years from now, we'll see. Just wondering, how much power do u need to max out WOW?

I think D3 will be released in 2010 sometime.... Blizzard did alot of work on it for Blizzcon this year (Yes I watched the webcast with my wife) I believe that it SC2 will be released in by the end of the 2nd Qtr and D3 will be out around christmas time. Again, these are MY opinions as I have absolutely no facts to base this off of.

Don't count on D3 being released this year, Blizzard already said that the only 2 big games they will release are SC2 (i still have my doubts) and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm (the need to keep milking the cow), so hoping for the best, probably early 2011.

Pure speculation on my side, WoW isnt a very demanding game, when i used to have my G71 it never pass 70C (this is with the CRYO), but on stress tests the it shave around 4-5C at the most. So i guess its gonna depend into how the cooling is on the G73, but if everything remains similar probably the Cryo will be one of the best options for it, in case it runs hot.

k thx for all the replies. still not too clear on whether or not having one of these mats is the norm or only certain models need them?

its a good idea to have a cooling pad for any gaming rig.

Cooling pads are a good idea for any notebook that you intend to use on your lap (hot components on your lap can have some adverse effects on your reproductive health, not to mention it can be uncomfortable if you're not in the dead of winter), and Element is right that they are a good idea for gaming rigs, regardless. Most gaming notebooks ARE built with adequate cooling, but cooler is always better :).

I definitely recommend a laptop cooler, since mine dropped my GPU temperature to 72C from 80~85C.
It's also safe for the laptop. I use antec notebook cooler as i mentioned before, i've been using it with no problems, it has a great air flow, a cooling surface made of aluminum, and also very light. It fits great on the lap, cable is short which i like. u can either put a high speed or a low speed. There's a blue led light which i don't like, but it's allright for me.
My friend has this too, he's been using this for almost 8months without problems.
There are alot of great coolers out there also, but if you're on a budget, Antec Notebook Cooler is a way to go. (personal experience/opinion)

if you're on a budget, a custom cooler is always the way to go, cheaper, and more powerful than any stock pre-build out there.

Im not sure if it will be able to play the games but out of the 4 asus laptops Ive owned they all ran on the warm side. I cooler wont hurt and as big as it is im guessing you are going to use it as a desktop replacement. and it would increase the life of your computer.

Have you had any problems with the USB connector? I have owned 2 Antec Notebook Coolers in the past and had the usb connection go out on both.
