Hey,
About a year ago I brought a ASUS G73-JH-RBBX05.
I plan on formatting this labtop with the Ultimate Windows 7 64-bit which I recently got, but wanted to ask about some consequences of formatting this labtop.
Besides the obvious of backing up my data; I wanted to know what are some other things that will or will not need backing up.
When I purchased my labtop I had the: vBIOS and BIOS; updated to the most latest versions at the time in consistency with the then BIOS issues that were affecting the G73-JH series.
1) How do I check which vBIOS and BIOS version do I have (I can't recall)?
2) Once I format will my BIOS need to be reupdated (in other words will it have been rolled back to factory shipped version)?
3) Once I format will my vBIOS need to be reupdated (in other words will it have been rolled back to factory shipped version)?
In addition, what happens to the AMD (ATI) Drivers for the Radeon 5870M in my labtop - do I have to reupdate these drivers to the latest version?
Additionally, my labtop has the i7-740QM CPU - for this processot is there anything I should worry about driver-wise?
Specifically, TurboBoost and TwinTurbno features - to have these enabled after the format are there specific drivers/utilities I would need to install?
Driver and utility-wise will there be anything else that may be a pain to install or would be hard to update?
I also wanted to explore what overclocking options I have, specifically, for the: CPU and GPU.
I recall for my CPU (i7-740QM) I believe the only option was to use the third party application SetFSB.
Is using SetFSB the only option I have for overclocking the i7-740QM? Are there no other options?
In addition, I also want to explore what overclocking options I have for the AMD (ATI) 5870M GPU that I have; what options to do I have to overclock this GPU?
Thanks,

bios and vbios are independent of the OS, they will remain as they are regardless of formatting. You can check your bios version in the bios or with a utility like HWiNFO and your vbios version with GPU-Z
When you format, everything will essentially be gone. You will have to reinstall all relevant drivers: chipset, video, audio, intel RST if you want it, card reader, webcam etc.
All the CPU features: turbo and HT don't need a driver to be installed. The turbo driver is for the monitor, not the CPU itself. To use Twin Turbo, you will need power4gear.
Check this for the utilities you want: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/380681-asus-utility-bloatware-guide.html.
I suggest you download all the latest drivers and the utilities you need before formatting. Make certain to get power4gear 1.1.37 if you do want that utility, the newer versions are meant for sandy bridge notebooks.
Clean install guide here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...lk-through-doing-clean-windows-7-install.html
EDIT: I merged your two threads as they are both related to the formatting and it could be considered cross posting which is against the forum rules.
EDIT2: to OC your CPU, as far as i know, only SetFSB works. For the GPU, get Chastity's vbios and use the overdrive function in CCC. -

1. Click Windows Start Button, on "search programs and files", type "system information" and click the outcome. The bios version should be already visible on the result.
Right click on your desktop and click "Catalyst Control Center" and go search for the "information" option and select "Hardware" so check your vbios version. It should be "012.020.000.032" if you want it to be on the most updated vbios.
2. You don't need to reupdate your BIOS after a fresh install of Windows.
3. You don't need to reupdate your vbios after a fresh install of Windows.
After doing a fresh install of Windows, you'll be needing to update your AMD (ATI) Drivers.
These are the only answers I can provide with confidence =) -
Hey,
I indeed have the ""012.020.000.032" vBIOS version thanks for showing how to pull that up.
Although for my BIOS the version that system information lists is: "America Megatrends Inc. G73JH.213 (1/27/2011)"; is this the latest BIOS version available?
Thanks,

Yep, 213 is the latest one. All that's left to do is to get all drivers and utilities on a flash drive/external drive and format away.
