I have a strange problem and i want to find out what would cause it. A few day ago my G73 started acting a little sluggish, loading webpages would be choppy, in browser animation would be slower. dragging windows on the desktop would bleed into other windows while moving. when it first happened i thought it was a virus so i just did a fresh reinstall-restore of the os, but it still is a problem so i figure it has to be a hardware problem, it does these same things in linux. now heres is whats weird I dont play games much anymore but i loaded up GTA and it played just like before so i dont think its the video card, I had thought it was the memory , but seems like i would have some issues playing GTA if it was, I turned off my wireless card to see if it was the culprit but i have the same issues with it off.

Also since i have reinstalled the OS the intel desktop speed moniter show my computer running up to 2.6ghz almost constantly , if i goto power4gear and lower the max processor speed then it stops spiking, heck it doesnt even show it running at all.

    thanks for reading

    What Vbios are you running?

As a reformat and reload would not chage that at all.
It is not stored on the hard drive.

not sure of the vbios number but the release date for the vbios is listed as 01-04-2010 , i wouldnt think that would be issue since no software or hardware was ever changed and never had a problem until now, but im not a computer whiz so i wouldnt know for sure. im gonna change the wireless card and the memory modules soon to see if any of those things are malfunctioning. using the program SIW (system info for windows) it says that bios is not reporting the amount of memory correctly, but when i go into bios it shows the right amount and windows memory diag shows no memory errors

The vBIOS that you currently have is the original one and its problems have been discussed at length all over the Internet. If you want to play any newer games without GSODs (Gray Screens of Death) or want to update your video drivers you absolutely need to flash to vBIOS 93. This has become a mandatory step for probably most, if not all, owners of G73JH laptops. Directions to do so are here. After you've flashed it your Catalyst Control Center should look as follows. Notice that the BIOS version is 012.020.000.032 and that its date is 2010/08/30.

i will try flashing it later, though i can still play games with no issue and i have never had any of the screens of death problems and still dont thats why i didnt think that flashing the bios for me would be needed.

is there a link to a page you can give that gives a specific procedure to do the flash without have to read through pages of peoples comments. I didnt find it on your link and they talked about needing to update the main bios too before updating the vbios?

Directions are in the first post of this thread. Steps 1 & 2. I don't recommend using any other method to flash as they are not as safe and have a higher chance of bricking (killing) your laptop.

Do you have anything running in the background that's hogging the CPU and causing the slowdown? That's the only thing that I can think of.

no, fresh install of win 7 with no bloatware, also has the same symptoms with Ubunru Linux so its not a software issue, also tried running OS's on different HDD's so the HDD are not the culprit, same issues with wifi card pulled out, so the wifi card is not a problem, currently waiting on new RAM to test it, it seems like a problem with the memory. I hope it is.

If you think it's a memory issue, then you could try running with only one stick and try swapping out sticks. It's unlikely that all of the memory sticks would be defective. That would give you something to try while the new ram ships.

Ok I have installed new ram and reinstalled windows on a new HDD also replaced the wireless card and i still have the issue.

    symptoms
    1. slow to load windows
    2. animations in windows such as taskbar are slower
    3. when loading a webpage, browser becomes slow to load info
    4. when in a IE or Firefox browser window, zooming (ctrl + or ctrl - ) becomes slow and sometimes can take a few seconds to respond to my actions.
    5. youtube ad other flash videos are green unless i go under settings and chose to NOT use hardware acceleration.

Now what is strange is that i can still play games like dead island or gta iv

so im thinking it has to be mobo or cpu, I still have one more year on my warranty but im afraid they will just reinstall the os and send it back to me saying there is no issues found (since it works)

any ideas on what i should do?

I don't believe they will just reload it. If you explain the problem clearly and make sure to tell them that it games fine then they will probably replace your motherboard or GPU or both. It sounds like you're having a 2D video problem but not 3D. I guess that could still be the GPU. It does both of those things. It could be the motherboard or CPU, though. I had to RMA mine twice and I find that they will replace more than necessary if they are unsure rather than doing nothing at all. I can't say it's the greatest service ever but I can say that in my experience they have no problem throwing parts at a laptop.

    1) Install and run DPC Latency Checker. Does your system exhibit high DPC Latency?

    2) What Antivirus, AntiMalware, Firewall, or Remote Access software have you installed to your system? Kernel mode drivers in these programs can sometimes conflict with other drivers on your system and cause performance issues.

    3) Consider trying ThrottleStop to resolve your slow performance issues. Problems appear on some G73JH and JW systems when the CPU enters lower power mode C States. See this thread: G73 Freezing/Crashing Issue - WORKAROUND FOUND

Wow thanks for the words of encouragement Jody. I have never RMA'd before so i was only able to go by the horror stories of RMA's posted here. It does seem like a 2d problem, when performing 2d tasks is when there is the issue, it just seemed strange that 3d would work and 2d would not.

Jody you really uplifted my spirits, thanks! I will probably contact Chasity like Josea suggested. Thanks Josea

dstrakele I will check out a dpc checker and see what it says, as for antivirus an firewall stuff, I dont think they are the issue because it happens in ubuntu Linux too with no other software installed, but i mainly just use win 7. I will also check out that throttlestop. thanks for the suggestion.

    thanks for the comments everyone

Since you also report these performance issue in Linux, I would also try entering the BIOS (F2 at the ASUS splash screen) and choose "Load Optimize Defaults" (F9).
