Hello guys and girls, I've had the G73Jh for a few months now, and quite recently been experiencing some problems with freezing.
The freezes last 1-3 seconds, sometimes slightly longer. At first I though it was the entire computer freezing, but turns out it's only the application in focus. When WoW froze I could move my mouse, and if I played it in windowed mode I could move the cursor over the desktop icons and they would highlight while the game itself was frozen.
I also tried playing minecraft in a window over the WoW window, and when minecraft froze, I could see that WoW was running fine in the background, no freezing there. I've only played 3 games on this computer, and the freezing has affected them all. In the beginning it also happened on youtube videos, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. While writing this forum-post I had a couple of freezes in the browser. When f.ex playing WoW, i dont experience freezes when just walking or stading still, it's always when I open something up (f.ex my character screen), when bosses do a mechanic or generally when I interact with something. In minecraft it's pretty much all the time, one freeze every 10 second I'd say, except when im just standing still.
I have done a full virus scan with trend micro pro and my computer seems to be in a fine state. I have never dropped it or spilled anything on it. I've tried selective start-up without success.
This is affecting my performance in-game and leaving me unmotivated to actually go on the computer at all. I want my notebook to work properly and hope someone here has any suggestions for me.
EDIT: I have updated graphic card drivers,
Thanks in advance.![]()

Did you update the vbios, which is in the top sticky?
-
No, the only thing I've updated since I got it is graphic card drivers and a couple of windows updates.
-
When did the lock-ups start happening? What did you install before they started happening. If you are running newer ATI drivers with an old vbios then that could be causing you're problems.
-
The lock-ups started 3 days ago, and I don't think I had done anything "special" on the computer that day. Might have downloaded new java version, but I've tried uninstalling it and the lock-ups are still there. I downloaded new ATI drivers yesterday, after the lock-ups had started.
I looked at G73 solution thread and found a windows hotfix for lock-ups, i thought it had fixed it as minecraft didn't freeze for a while, but it's now back. Does anyone know if I have to do anything besides extracting the files on that hotix? Thank you so much for the help, I'm kinda desperate here.
Bump! Freezes are still occuring.
So far I've
tried selective start-up
windows lock-up hotfix (i just extracted folders, dont know if i have to do anything else)
updated graphic card drivers
and as said, still freezes... it does no longer freez youtube videos, but all games freeze plus sometimes web browsers, especially when i type. It goes up and down but its usually so often that it ruins the game experience. Please, if anyone have anything else to suggest, let me know..
I am a computer n00b and going about updating bios and all that sounds scary, i dont wanna brick the thing or ruin anything... i've had this computer for a few months and it's been working properly up until 3 days ago. -
wait, let me get this straight, u are only experiencing a few seconds of freezing but you never have to do a force shut down right?
If thats the case, maybe your hardrive just need some cleaning. search for errors, defrag, remove unwanted programs, remove start up programs. For this, dl tune up utilities.
edit - the reason 2 or 3 seconds of freezing occurs is because of your hardrive. It doesn't matter if you have a 10000ghz processor, your hardrive can only read/write at a certain speed. So its best to keep it clean of crap or buy a SSD which cost an arm and a leg.
Do a vbios update (only for 5870m cards). look at my tutorial in my sig for gsod fix. also update your bios. just folow directions and it should be ez as pie.
latest drivers for video card is very stable so use that. Also, the last link in my sig will be very useful for you. Most driver updates are there.
edit - If you get lock ups to the point where your computer completely freezes, curser and everything and you can only do a force shut down, I recommend reinstaling windows without updates, then update to windows 7 sp1, then turn on updates. -
It is just the application in focus that freezes. If I have 2 games on over each other in windowed mode the one in focus freezes while the one in the background runs like normal. They last a couple of seconds and I can move the cursor, so it's simply just the application that freezes.
Thank you for your suggestions, I will try cleaning up and updating. I did defrag not long ago. -
clean ur driver first, then test. Vbios is suppose to be for fixing gsod issues which u haven't said u haven't any but I do remember it upgrades powerplay which improves battery life (gpu will run at say... 400mhz when ur not doing anything insensive and ocs to 700 when u play games or watch 1080p sometimes). Bios improve fan speeds, glitches, and other stuff.
good luck. -

Okay, I feel silly now.. but I thought I had done a defrag but apparently not. I started another now and after some time it finished, ive now played MC (used to freeze once every 30 second on average) for 10 min without freez so I think it was just my drive that was messy.. i was pretty certaint that i had done one just after i noticed freezing though.. something might have gone wrong or i might have cut it short :S dunno, but i believe it's allright now... thanks alot for the help. (i even wrote this message without freeze).
I am a n00b at this stuff so me behind a computer is like a monkey driving an airplane. -
monkeys are the only thing I let fly my planes.
Glad you fixed the problem.
Problem with my g73jh, pleeease help! :(
