Almost 2 years ago I purchased a Asus G73JH-A1 from new egg. The laptop has had issues with sound since I purchased it but I deleted the Soundblaster software and it worked fine. Now for the past 4-5 months it would boot but the screen would never come on just stay black. I hooked up a spare monitor i have to the external port and it boots every time. Now it is overheating I believe and shutting down and wont allow you to restart for a minute or two. The laptop has a ATI 5870 video card and I would tell you bios but i cant get device manager to open every time I try windows explorer crashes. I know this isnt much information but is it possible to change the video card in this machine and if so would it be better to RMA it back to ASUS or take it to the local computer repair place. I have built desktops but havent ever done anything on a laptop but just add memory so dont know if im savy enough to do it if its possible.

thanks for any help/advice you can give.

If you need more i will try to get it after the laptop has been off for awhile to see if i can get into device manager

if you still got waranty on the JH its better to RMA if you dont then first you have to fix the OH issue by repasting the GPU with a decent thermal paste like AS5 or ICD7 then start trouble shooting the black screen.

check with an external monitor if it works they your GPU is fine and test another screen it could be a dead LED or a damaged LED connector or disconnected cable if it didnt post you might got a faulty GPU or a dead MOBO.
