I'm thinking about buying the ASUS ROG G551JW-DS71-CA ( http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_577_1198&item_id=083197), everything seems good about it for a ~$1300 CAD gaming/university laptop. The one issue I've been reading about is the GPU throttling once it reaches 74 degrees. Does anyone know about this laptop and know how much this would effect the performance and if there is a fix for it? The main games I'd be playing are WoW, HoTS, Diablo, as well as using it for CAD and programming stuff in Uni.

A 960M will not throttle at 74 degrees from thermal overload. Throttling is reserved for temps reaching low - mid 90s Celsius.

It should treat you just fine as far as performance goes. Make sure your CAD program(s) list compatibility with a GeForce 960M!
