So I run gpuz in the background whenever I game just to keep an eye on my temps, and I noticed that the fan speed never goes over 30%. Is this normal? my max temp is 71c, but when I check the fan speed its consistant @ 30%.

Am I being paranoid or shouldnt the fan kick in to higher rpms when I game?

Also on another note, what do you guys use to monitor your cpu temp, thanks.

    Mike

What game do you max at only 71C? Man ATI/AMD really did a good job on the newer revisions of the 5870m...and/or ASUS is doing better with the JH paste jobs...

Anyways GPUZ never shows the correct fan speed. In fact the only program I know that does is HwInfo32, try that out.

As for CPU temps: Core Temp and/or HwInfo32

There are my temps after a few games in the Crysis 2 Demo...only that and L4d2 brings my GPU into the mid 80's otherwise most games only go high 70's

My paste job is good too

Ugh here is a paraphrased post by DCx originally addressed to me in another thread.

Most companies, afaik, overtime release revised versions (revisions) of their hardware to improve upon something. In this case temps. Earlier revison cards like mine and DCx just run hotter, despite what we do (for the most part)

I was just saying it seems ATI/AMD have changed it just a bit so its temps are more inline with say the JW/460

Anyways, thats probably as far OT as we should get

EDIT: Oh my attached sensor log is over 2 or 3 games of MP Crysis 2, 1920x1080 Advanced settings.

CrappyAlloy: thanks for the info, your very knowledgable, but do I see this right? You underclock your GPU and drop the voltage until you game?

Also I was playing call of duty black ops and the highest I hit was that 71c.

I never did a sensor Log. Next time I game I will give that a go I am curious what my cards doing!

That's fine. I hit about 79, and I'm quite happy with that.

As for the underclocking and such, you can't undervolt the card (not really, anyways), and ATI powerplay takes care of automatic underclocking. If you want automatic overclocking, you need to unlock your video bios, and it isn't really worth while.

    @KiD5er

Well if im understanding your question correctly lol yes I modified my vBIOS with RBE so powerplay does all the underclocking/overclocking (however I never really use an overclock and when I do I usually use AMD GPU Clock tool for testing and benchmarking purposes) for me :)

I have it set so pretty much anything outside of gaming (and UVD) stays at 70/100 then when I game and 3d mode/clocks are activated it goes back up to 700/1000, I get the benefits of greater battery life and cooler temps, as well as all the performance when needed :)

EDIT: Damn DCx beat me to it..

CrappyAlloy: off topic and out of curiosity, whats your highest 3dmark06 score?

so I did a GPU-Z sensor log and played HL2 episode 1 for an hour, exited out and checked my results. Max temp was 70c, but its telling me that GPU LOAD WAS 3 PERCENT?? what the hell, that cannot be right.

Umm I believe it was high 14k or low 15k with overclocking

Hmm lol did you check both "log to file" and "continue while in the background" (or w/e it is)?

okay, so I gave it another go, this time playing DAWN OF WAR 2 for a little while. came back to check my results and with GPU load at 100 percent my max temp was 81c. :/

Im thinking about ordering one of those laptop coolers. maybe I should start a whole separate thread about that. do any of you use those, and if so how effective are they?

That reading for fan speed percentage has ALWAYS BEEN ABSOLUTELY USELESS.
I believe that the latest version of HWInfo32 has accurate readings for fan speed when measuring RPM instead of percentage.

EDIT: Sorry, the question had already been answered.

Because HWInfo32 reads the RPM directly from the EC.
We have luck, the developer integrated this.

just a few degrees? i hear tilting the laptop, proppin it up in the back helps air flow and cools down temps as well

well, now with the massive23 my CPU temp is at 36~41 deg( im just using google chrome)
    GPU is 40 deg.

without the cooling device the temps are abouth 2~4 deg hotter.
i didnt test the temp at hardcore gaming(i might do it later with crysis 2 demo and report back)

    my laptop is G73jw-A1
