Ok I did this last night and used arctic silver 5. Anytime I've ever applied thermal paste to anything i always put a small amount(pea sized) in the middle and spread it around evenly accross the surface of the part(cpu, gpu, northbridge...ect.). And that's exactly how I did it this time. Now I have seen where people are just putting the pea sized amound of thermal paste in the middle and slapping the heatsink back down. Is this a new technique? Am I old school or what? Really don't want to crack it back open and redo it. :( What do you guys think? Thanks!

    Hello,

Here is the Instruction Page for Actic Silver 5 thermal paste ( Arctic Silver Incorporated - Home. From what I can tell they "don't" use the "pea method" rather they use a spread method and or line method.

Go to that page and select your CPU and See what they recommend.

Personally when I've used AS5 I've done the pea method pressing down heatsink then giving the heat sink a twist from side to side to help the spread. Never had a problem with that method.

Travelor is right. The pea method can be the best way to apply the thermal paste, The spread or line method usually fails due to the air pockets trapped inside. Just a 5mm peasize should be fine.
