So I won this on an auction:
Asus G51VX-X3A Gaming Laptop GeForce GTX260M Demo Unit - eBay (item 150469898161 end time Jul-27-10 18:30:05 PDT)
and I'm just wondering - how do I know which CPU processors, GPU cards, and RAM modules I can install in my laptop? The Asus manual isn't particularly helpful (it doesn't include any instructions on how to replace them - so there's a risk that I might accidentally break something while I'm replacing components) and the Asus website doesn't list any vendors who have products that might cater to my laptop.
Another thing that's somewhat confusing is that the System Information window actually lists my laptop as part of the G60Vx series. So I don't exactly know what model my laptop is.

You may be able to replace the CPU. The ram is likely the fastest that machine can support and the GPU is not replaceable.
-
Oh, hm, I've read from some sources that the RAM is upgradable to 8 GB. How would I know if I could replace my CPU with, say, an i7?
-
I think it has no meaning to change anything on that laptop as it has pretty strong GPU, decent CPU and enough of memory. It is not possible to change CPU to core i3/5/7 or to DDR3 in this case.
You should have chosen another notebook if you wanted Core i3/5/7. -
You won't be able to put a i7 in it. It's a different socket type and will not fit. The fastest chip it will accept is a T9900 or a x9100.
-
Yeah, but I doesn't think that notebook is designed for that big TDP. And if he sold this notebook and bought G73JH it would cost him less than a new T9990
Edit: You can of course buy 2x 4GB DDR2 memory modules, but I don't see that very important. -
I agree, it's not worth the money to upgrade.
It's a great machine, the 260 still has plenty of life left considering the ocean of DX9/DX10 games that continue to be released.
Just use that beast until you want to upgrade to a faster machine or until it dies. You should be happy with that until then.
I really don't see a point in 8 GB of ram for that machine, 4GB is plenty even for video editing work.
