    Hi guys,

I'm considering buying an Asus G73Jh over the Alienware M17x. But I'll want to install an SSD drive (Micron RealSSD C300 256GB SATA 6Gbps SSD) in it, cause to be honnest putting a normal hdd in this beast is rediculous. The SSD I want to use is a fairly new one and uses the SATA III (6Gb/s) interface. Now my question is: does the Asus G73 support and offer the SATA III with an integrated onboard controller or is it still the more dated SATA II interface ?

Another question: would a person without knowing actually be able to tell difference between 8gb DDR3 ram at 1066 or at 1333 speeds. Does it even make a difference and if so, is it really noticable or is the distinction marginally and thus negligible?

Maybe a side question: I'm also considering upgrading the 720 i7 processor and go with the 820qm i7 one; In your eyes, would this be a beneficial switch, and what are your thoughts on this ??

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

The 820QM is beneficial, but probably not worth the price (how much would you be paying?).

Thx lackofcheese for your swift reply.

The money is not an issue, but the expense must be rationaly justified for my own conscience, you see. If I'll hardly notice the difference in my activities, it's not worth it; but on the other hand if it makes my laptop perform 20% better it might just be.
It might be helpful to you guys to sum up what my computer is being used for.
My main activity is: games BUT mostly World of Warcraft (75%); the rest is internet, u know office applications (word, excel); winrar, and fullHD movies on Nas(hdd's over network) or on Bluray Discs.

Any further advice or reasoning is AGAIN greatly appreciated

Well, with the i7-820QM vs the i7-720QM you're looking at 8MB cache vs 6MB and ~15% extra clock speed. It's a nice boost, but I don't think it's worth more than $100.

I actually have the same questions. Can anybody respond about SATA III support, and whether the $200 upgrade to 1333 is worth it in the RAM (Or even supported on this mobo)?

Ram is support. both 1333 and 1066mhz. There are 4 dim slot. each holds 8gb max. (32gb total). As for sata 3. I have no clue.

    No SATA III support.

Unlikely that the memory speed will be significant, especially as others have observed the 1333 DRAM included with some early G73s had significantly higher CAS timing than the 1066, so actual speed differences are quite small.

As to CPU choice, it depends on your application. If you want to play games, the CPU is not the bottle neck and a faster CPU will give you a few more points on 3DMark benchmark tests, but no advantage in actual games (where the GPU is the key component). If you are doing heavy duty calculations on the CPU (e.g., rendering high def video), then faster a CPU with more cache will definitely make a difference.

    Good luck with your decision,
    Ira

I believe this is incorrect. The max is 16GB.

Nope. Max is 8GB per stick. Since there is no 8gb stick,... we can only upgrade to 16GB right now.

For the longest time I always thought the max was 8GB, that's what many places report including ZDNet and ASUS. But, when you see places like GenTech offering 16GB, I figured both ZDNet and ASUS was wrong.

Sorry, I know this is an old thread but I was curious about this as well. I noticed that some places (GenTech) have the option to order the G73jh with 16GB of RAM even though the listing at BestBuy says that RAM is expandable up to 8GB. Recently, I just added a 4GB stick to the empty slot and my system now shows 10GB of RAM available. It looks like the laptop will take more than 8GB as advertised in some locations.

Am I right in thinking that I could replace all of my other 2GB sticks with 4GB and max out the laptop at 16GB? Is it possible, as some have suggested, that each slot can take 8GB for a total of 32GB (if 8GB sticks were available)?
