I was reading around about the problems with the gray screen of death concerning these models, but then I came across a few threads mentioning that the best buy model (Asus G73JH-BST7) has an updated BIOS and isn't affected by the crash that usually accompanies the driver update.

Can anyone confirm/deny this? Also, is the keyboard issue where sometimes keypresses aren't registered fixed also?

    Thanks

I have the G73 from Best Buy and it works fine unless I update the drivers from ATI. That's when I experience the GSOD.

I just uninstalled the new drivers, ran driver sweeper and installed the latest ones from the Asus site - everything works great this way.

Also, if you look at the support FAQ for this computer, the first question refers to the GSOD. The answer says only to use the Asus driver.

I don't know if there is any advantage to using the latest ATI driver, since I have not been able to compare the two.

I don't know what vBios or what BIOS the BST7 is sold with. But if you have issues with it, and the BIOS are NOT up to date, then updating the bios will most certainly fix it. Those of us running the updated vBios DO NOT have GSOD issues. A few people have missed key strokes but most of us do not, there is a fix for it if you do (although it is debatable if it actually work).

So to answer your question, all issues with the BST7 are fixed, if yours needs updating, it is not hard to do.

I have the bst7 and the only thing I have done to it is uninstall the bloatware and update my gpu drivers. It came with the 211 bios and I have not upgraded my vbios. I game for hours on end and it is perfect. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

At 1199 new I am really thinking about this laptop, all though I wish I knew when the g73SW was being released at best buy =/

Anyone know the power differences between the two?

Any laptop I get I will upgrade to a SSD and possibly better/faster ram but it just depends if I feel as if I will need it or not.

I have a decent amount of money to spend on a new laptop, I just have no clue what to buy yet =/

I have the G73JH-BST7 and recently updated the vBIOS (Chastity's) and drivers (11.2). So far for the past 2 weeks it has been running VERY stable with no GSOD's. With the new drivers I have lower overall temps and an overall increase in performance for games. I didn't need to update the BIOS because the BST7 comes stock with the 211 BIOS. In other word's this machine runs like a dream and I am VERY satisfied with it! :D

The only word of caution that I give is be weary of the screen you may get with the best buy models. I unfortunately received the AUO B173RW01 (the bad one) and the while the color and brightness are good, the viewing angles and contrast ratio are pretty bad. In the future I will upgrade the screen though.

Oh yeah about the keyboard issue; I think it was supposedly fixed in BIOS 211 (but I may be wrong), and I haven't had ONE missed keypress since I got my G73! :)

Took them over 9 months after the official release to get the JH models in at best buy. And the SB version isn't going to give you a significantly better EXPERIENCE, to be honest. Yes, it's faster for CPU intensive things, but no, the GPU is about the same as the JH and exactly the same as the JW.

If you need a new computer, buy a new computer. The only brand you should ever plan on timing a purchase with is apple, and that's because they have a regular release schedule. There will *always* be something better coming out shortly after you purchase, ALWAYS, if you wait for SB, you'll be waiting for the next gen GPUs, if you wait for those, you'll be waiting on intel again for the next chip revision ... etc, etc. 6 months is a long time in tech circles, so no matter when you buy, you're generally outdated within 6 months.

So buy for your needs today, because there is no such thing as future proofing a laptop - sure, you can spend 3x and get something top of the line. but in 6 months, it won't be top of the line, and will cost 1/2 as much.
