I was wondering if I dock the G73 either to a docking station, or on a KVM setup, whether it is harmful to keep the lappy closed while it is in use. I heard that the air flows in from the keyboard, so I thought if the G73 is closed it might restrict the airflow. Does anyone do this? Any thoughts?

Unless you are run games while the lip closed, it should be fine and stay cool for something like DLing pr0n.

As i hear it doesnt actually just suck air in from the keyboard but rather from everywhere - keyboard, bottom plate, every hole you can find...

I just figured I'd add in here since I'm doing exactly what you wanted to know. My G73 has basically been a desktop for the past 2 months. The temperatures remain well within reasonable levels at ~55C idle and ~80C on load (but I haven't repasted it yet).

Actually, if you look closely under the screen with a flashlight, you'll see slits where the fans are. Those are the main air intakes for the G73. There is still space for air to flow when the lid is closed. However, while gaming the area where the GPU is gets warm, i don't think it's enough to damage your screen, but you might want to be careful and check the keyboard temp from time to time the first time you game with the lid closed.

i've opened up my g73 completely atleast 3 times now and i can assure you that the only intake there is, is at the bottom....
there is no space to suck in air from the KB or the grill..

put a tissue near the keyboard when it is running, and you will see if slightly suck to the keyboard....on the other hand, cover the keyboard with paper and watch your temps rise. It does pull from other places, but a BIG portion if through the keys

Regardless of where the air intake is located, I personally don't close the lid with the laptop running because of concerns of heat damage to the LED screen.

Do you have the laptop connected to a KVM switch or docking station and still leave the notebook open? I ask, because my wife's HP notebook is connected to a KVM switch here at home and a docking station at work, and is always used in the closed position. Her laptop gets quite a bit warmer then my G73 does during use too. (she's been using this lappy for about 2 years now, 5 days a week, 10 hrs. a day minimum.) Do you think the LCD display in our G73's are more fragile?

Kalim is exactly right. unless you have unlimited money why take a chance? I keep mine in a well ventilated area, and now that I will be doing more gaming I am going to get a cooler. I do not think it is a matter of fragility (if that is a word), just a matter of design/personal preference. I also have a Dell D610 in a dock station and from info gathered here I now always keep it open when it is powered on.

Meanwhile I've used the D610, 600, 620 and the same ilk for years (along with all the users I supported) and many of us, myself included, never opened it and always had it docked closed. Never once did I see a screen that appeared to be heat damaged or mysteriously not working. I think people worry overmuch about it.
