Hello, I have purchased my Asus G73sw-xn2 on Newegg and I'd like to say I'm loving it so far! I have not had any major problems with this laptop, and I am enjoying it!

However, there is one problem that's been confusing me. The laptop's max resolution is 1920x1080 (16:9), but when I try to use 1600x900 on some games (Like the Witcher 2, since I find 20-35fps too slow for me playing it on 1920x1080), the game usually gives an error and crashes. Does this laptop not support other 16:9 resolutions?

    Please help.

It does. You may just be having driver issues. Try setting the desktop to the desired resolution first before running the game.

So I changed my desktop resolution to 1600x900, and tried to run it once more, but it crashed again :(

Is it only happening in one game? If so, update drivers and see if there are any patches for the game.

If its consistent across a few, then I'd still go with drivers before anything else. And are you sure it is only happening when running at 1600x900? It doesn't happen at all at 1920x1080?

I thought it was only one game but I also tried to do it in just cause 2, and it crashes. I also tried it on starcraft 2, but the resolution changes to 1280x1024.

I also reinstalled the nvidia modded inf drivers with driversweeper, but no luck.

is it new revision ? or old one ?
Previously there were such things and Asus modified notebooks with small label on the keyboard which is written New Revision. This is very minor idea but possible.

Nevertheless the games which you mentioned really hard games and need strong source your card has been overclocked or still in stock clocks ? or when you play AC power connected or you are facing problem on battery, if all ok then better to check driver first if also ok it is better to check game's own files DirectX- C++ and others which are necessary

Well, it looks like the issue was the direct x, I guess I didn't download the correct one, thanks chastity!

Heres another question, I've noticed that the right side of the vent is hotter than the left side. Should I clean out the vent or do I need to repaste??

right side GPU outlet and left side CPU so it is quite normal you dont need to do anything actually normal game play for ex. Crysis 2 in ultra sett. max temp around 84 C stable. Right side always hotter but if you get more than 90C during game play and it is stable then you shoul worry about it.

Benchmarks like furmark after 3 minutes 92-93 stable it is also normal

Thanks for the reply luckysword. When running witcher 2 I'm getting temps of 74 C max, and 45C when idle. I was getting worried because previously I used to get 35C when in idle and 60C in gaming. Maybe because I overclocked that my temps went up. oh well.

your welcome, and you right overclocked GPU always hotter than stock.
Mine is 825/1650/1625 and stable on any game and in any condition. max temp during game play 84-85 ans idle around 45-50.

Well, I think I have a problem with the AC adapter.
Whenever I play dead space 2, my laptop shuts off...without any warning. I've read around the forums and I was thinking about getting the targus apa05us 180w adapter.

Now the question is this the right product?:
    Amazon.com: Lite-On AC Power Adapter PA-1181-08, APA05US. 19V/9.5A, 180W for Acer Aspire 1360, 1510, 1520, 1660/1670 / Acer TravelMate 2000, 2200, 2500, 2600, 2700, 3000 / Compaq Presario R3000 series / Fujitsu: N3010, N5010, N6000, N6010 / HP: ZD700

Sorry to bother you again guys. I appreciate the help.

If it shuts off it's not your adapter, but thermal protection.
I guess your laptop is overheating.
This unless you see the led on the AC turning off completely when that happens, in that case it may be the AC afterall.
Better you monitor the temp ingame with an OSD like Msi Afterburner then report back.
Or simply run furmark and stress test the system, you should be in 90c range. If it reaches 100c then the laptop shuts down.
It could be even your CPU.

I did run furmark before and it ran at 81C. Whenever I game, my temps are usually around 74-77C. Idle temp is at 45C so I doubt its overheating.

Might be an idea to check again and use HWINFO sensors to monitor all sections of the GPU/CPU.

Temps are fine then. Your GPU vent will run hotter that your CPU vent but that does not explain the crashing. Sounds like drivers of some kind.

I'm using a modded inf 280.36 drivers since 280.26 or 280.36 from the nvidia website doesn't recognize my hardware...
I uninstalled my previous driver using add or remove programs then the driver sweeper.

@rezegen,,, if your voltage value and current value A " it can be different " are same you just need to be sure the connection is same. anyway you can check yours with the requested one and you can decide, but it seems universal so one of the connection will be the same with yours.

Nevertheless for your main problem I think it is better to check overclock values first " if any you already did " because even in very hard overclock which I tried 850 core never happened such think wit me ? just driver crush time to time but never shut off. so it can be such complete damage with your adaptor so you can replace but I think better to check driver first.

And last thing, of course 180 W will be more usefull but be careful for the same voltage value.

Thank you for responding. Well I downclocked to 750/1550/1550 and it takes longer to crash, so I'm guessing its the result of my adapter. So I was thinking if I got the adapter I can finally clock back to 800/1600/1600 without crashes. I read some posts here that people no longer experience crashes with that adapter with overclocking =)

your computer is crushing or shutting down ??? because crush generally happens because of driver fault actually before even in 1450 memory speed I had crush even at the start up but later on I renewed drived completely and 1650-1675 memory wrtking perfect just I use 1625 to be stay in safe side.

but shutting down issue totatly different and yes it should be because of adaptor and when you change adaptor it should be cleared. and in this point 180W is the best choise with same Voltage

Sorry, I meant to say it shuts down. No errors, just the laptop shuts off.
Sweet, I guess I'll order it then.

    19 against 19.5 ,,,
so I think it will not be a prolem because current value will be higher I believe that it will work properly.
