    Hello,

DirectX in simple terms is a Microsoft Product that programmers/developers utilize to make games more readily usable within the Windows Platform.

    Here's a Wiki on DirectX
Also Games For Windows Introducton to DirectX

That should provide you with a lot of information. If you want more do a "Google Search" on DirectX and you'll find much much more.

As far as needing to update it, I would recommend that you do keep it up to date with the latest versions. Especially if you keep your Video Drivers up to date.

    In Peace and Agape,

Usually if you install a game it will automatically provide you the latest DirectX version. Also the automatic update service of windows includes DX updates as far as I remember.
