Does anyone know about how often ASUS releases new models of their g-series laptops. As far as I gathered, the latest models have the 460m/560m as their video cards.
Ideally I'd like to run Deus-Ex / Diablo 3 (haven't seen any benchmarks on this yet) at pretty high settings. I've looked at the Clevos and MSI, but their noise level is probably a deal breaker for me. I'm waffling on picking up a G53SW-A1 / G53SX-XR1 now, or just waiting for a newer model.

The G74 has only just been released. Dont expect something new anytime soon they are loving their mid range models atm.
The 460M and 560M will be able to run Deus Ex perfectly fine even with settings on high 1080p it is not that intensive. Diablo 3 should not be a major problem either it is game such as Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 that will require certain settings to be managed if you intend to game at Full HD.
You will get a different recommendation from different people because they own that specific model, I dont recommend my JH to people because if the issues have not been fixed and they dont know how to they might not be too pleased but the JH is best bang vs buck if you put some time into getting it working right.
Out of the two you mention the G53SW-A1 every day of the week. The SX has a 128bit GPU which performs lower than the older SW model. Make sure you get a model with 192bit if you intend to get an Asus. The G73SW/53SW is still in my books the best model you can get if you are looking for an Asus with the most recent CPU. -
Gotcha. I initially looked at the G73 models, but probably want something a bit more mobile, and it will be docked the majority of the time.
What's the difference between the ASUS G53SW-XR1 and the G53SW-A1? It looks like Xotic has a pretty good special on the XR1 -
Check for differences in HDD configurations, BD vs DVD player and screen resolution. The SW has a 192-bit GTX460m, the SX has a 128-bit GTX560m.
The G74 does have a 192-bit GTX560m though. -
Thanks all. Just a little worried about stupid high settings on D3 - they turned WoW from a joke to run into a monster, so I was a little concerned I'd be stuck on Medium on D3
-
I tried to go back to WoW a while ago and spammed it at Ultra 1080P and it ran at 40fps easy on my 5870M so you should have no problem running it on a 460/560M.
Sadly even with the stupidly high settings WoW did not look as good as the performance loss made out. -
Sorry last question (sorta unreleated) - do the SWs only handle one external? If not what's the cheapest way to get dual externals? The Matrox stuff seems ridiculously expensive, and for whatever reason that makes me hesitate.
-
The Nvidia card does not have Eyefinity that is the ATI cards you can only have one external output running at one time ie laptop screen and HD screen or DVI output.
-
192-bit GTX460m = 128-bit GTX560m rite? isn't the performance going to be equal? -
No. The 460M GTX Best buy version & the 560M GTX Best buy version and the G53SX models are all 128bit.
Again no they do not compare because the 128bit version are only 40GB/s Bandwidth the 192bit versions are all 64GB/s bandwidth stock.
Also the Pixel fillrate suffers on the 128bit versions. It is a noticable loss in performance however you have to decide if it is worth the couple of hundred $ less you pay. For modern gaming into 2012 its going to be worth paying the extra. -
GenTech PC - Systems
This site says the G53SW-A1 is discontinued, I would want to know why before I purchased this model. -
Its what you say below, everyone has a different recommendation, but my G73JH has to tighten every muscle it has to run Deus Ex on 1080p.
I'm also worried about Battlefield 3, I LOVE the way it looks on gameplay-footage, and as people say, it's better coded than Bad Company 2 cause of the new frostbite 2.0 engine.
I still love playing Bad company 2, and with HBAO/VSYNC off, anti aliasing on 2x, anisotrophic on 16x, shadows on medium and rest on high, it plays on 45 fps on 1080p
.
Positively sure that Modern Warfare 3 will run well on our Jh's in 1080p with everything maxed out, since the game is basicly Modern Warfare 2.1. They say it themselves that graphic-wise, they didnt make (a lot of) improvements.
Exactly
. Mine didnt have any issues, except for the trackpad, which I don't use that much. Follow Chastity's link to the drivers/bios' and keep em up to date, than all is good ^^

Really? People have been getting 40-50fps easy at 1080p with settings maxed out on the JH? I get 50-60fps when I run it at 900p.
Have you got the charger plugged in
Maybe you need that 920XM fella
Also Battlefield will run fine I reckon BETA showed that it is capable and to be honest laptops are not made to run at ultra 1080p high 900p for me and im happy!
BC2 ran poor when it first came out, if they have programmed BF3 better at release it should run better than BC2 did at release.

hi guys ,
great post -
i see.. coz i read a lot of forum regarding these 2 cards; coz i was also planning to purchase the G53sx at the end of the year... many of them say, in terms of performace, they r the same... hm.....
since the production for g53sw may stop soon as aforementioned by some1 above, what is ur advise/recommendation now? -
visually we are only talking 5-10fps but on paper they are not if you compare an overclocked 128bit 560M to a stock clocked 192bit 460M they will be quite similiar in the results department.
But overclock the 460M GTX and it will breeze the 128bit.
It really depends on how picky you are about settings I personally like things to run on high or maxed out when I game at 900p to make up for the resolution loss. Considering the recommended GPU for BF3 is a desktop version of the 460 GTX and the mobile 460 GTX is better than a 128bit mobile 560 GTX. Well you get my drift, if you want to game into 2012 dont start with a bottlenecked GPU. -
Ima take a second look at my settings than...
Oh wait, you need power ? I thought laptops were supposed to run wireless !
...
Im seriously considering a 920XM.... so tempting.... -
You do need some power yes or you could do what I do. I have 50 male on heat hamsters running round wheels with female hamsters just out of their reach!
Gives me a good 200watts to play with.
Go Green! 920XM FTW. Totally ungreen that CPU.
