I'm not really a gamer. Probably the most intense thing I will do on my laptop is play movies and do a lot of multitasking but I want something extremely reliable and future proof because I don't want to have to buy another laptop for a few years. I have a few questions that I REALLY want answered.
Is the price of the G72 expected to decrease once the G73 is released? If so any guesses by how much?
Does anybody know when/if NewEgg will have the G73 in stock?
I've heard about overheating, BSODs, etc and was wondering if these are common things even if my laptop is completely stock (no overclocking of any kind, won't be swapping out any parts or even open the back, etc)?
Thanks in advance!

the Best Buy Version of the G72, which is a watered down version meaning no blu-ray, lower quality screen, slower processor. However doing computer tasks and gaming, there should be little to no difference.
The price of recently dropped from $1100 to $999, probably because the G73 is coming out next month so they are phasing it out.

I'm typing this post from my stock G72 I bought for $1100 during Christmas and I've had a couple of BSODs related to the nvidea drivers but other than that the computer is pristine. The computer is fast and the only major complaints I have is that the contrast on the screen sucks and the cooling fan is very audible and always on, but eventually I just play music to silence it out.
But I'd would recommend it because there's so much bang for your buck. Think about this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220669&cm_re=asus-_-34-220-669-_-Product

Both those models are part of the main line, and they carry a $400 to $700 premium over the Best Buy Model, yet the Best Buy version is faster in gaming because the Core 2 Duo is mostly faster in games and applications because very few software are coded for quad cores. And all G72s come standard with the 260M GTX, which is quite a fast graphics card.
Basically...If you're looking to buy a high value system that will last you quite some time buy the Best Buy G72, because what the G73 offers in coming weeks/months won't benefit the tasks for your money anyway. Plus the G73 pricing starts at $1600.
Or you can hope that Best Buy will carry a version of the G73 for a reasonable price. -
I don't really want a C2D anymore because that is aging and many newer processors exist. A quad core is probably my minimum
Besides the G73, the G72 from NewEgg is definitely the most bang for my buck and has ALL the features plus more that I want.
I am just wondering if the price will go down once the G73 is released and if I'll have any problems with it.
By the way, you said " very few software are coded for quad cores", does this mean that some software won't work at all with a quad core, or that they simply don't take advantage of the quad core? -
If you're willing to put down $1700 for a laptop definitely wait for the G73 to come out next month.

less than now.

If you can hold out for a little while longer and spend a little more on the G73, I believe you may future-proof yourself for a little while longer. In addition to that, the architecture and components in the G73 are the new top-of-the-line laptop components so the decision comes down to how much you want to pay and what you want to pay for. I do not think the price of the G72 will come down all that much as you are already getting a lot of bang for your buck, so I wouldn't hold your breath for that
All the best with your search/purchase. -
Look at the G51J as a model. It is VERY hard to find right now on the internet, and the replacement G51jx is still 2 weeks from launching! -
I actually won't be ready to purchase for a least a couple months probably and if I need to, I could wait another 1 or 2 since it's not an emergency.
To everybody: Is it safe to assume that the price of the G73 won't go above $1,700 and stay where it's at now (around $1,650)? -
The price won't go up. If XoticPC or GentechPC are selling for around $1700 then that's where it will top out, unless of course you are upgrading any of the components through them or purchasing any accessories.

Um, just putting it out there. If future proof is what you're looking for, in my opinion you should definitely look at the ASUS N71JQ-A1. You'll be trading the superior graphic card of the G73 for a HD5730 (Still, more than sufficiently competent if you don't intend to game) for a slightly cheaper solution with USB 3.0. You can stick in a 80GB SSD for even better performance of day to day tasks bringing the total up to about 1600 USDs which I think is an overall better and future proof solution if gaming isn't on your agenda.

In theory the G73 may be among the most long-lived high-performance laptops from ASUS ever, and that's because they went back to the drawing board on the cooling solutions. Rather than try to adapt an older case and main board design (the G50 to G51, for example), with the G73 they started with a fresh piece of paper, and realized that they were including two very hot parts in the CPU and GPU. Everybody who has seen these in person remarks on the heat sinks in back being "massive", the whole "slice" design is centered around taking in cool air from the front and moving a LOT of it around the processors and then out the back. Theoretically, if ASUS has done its homework -and I'm assuming they have - on this design it should be one of the coolest-running longest-lasting high performance models in a very long time, from any OEM.

Definitely the G73 then. Order quick, they're selling like hot cakes. Any questions about the G73, the dedicated G73 thread is at your disposal. Lol. G'luck. -
I will agree with ren3g7ade. You should wait for a couple weeks. I'll explain:
1) New G73jh will arrive to first owners and they will be able test it themselves and find all bugs(if any).
2)Price for G72 will dercrease a little bit more.(I think that they still will be available after 2 weeks)
3)You will be able to compare those two after real testing by users.(G73jh) Belive me G72 will be capable to handle most games in coming 1.5 year.
But anyway it's your decision. We are here only to help you make it.
Good luck in purchase. -
i would get a core i9 @ 3.x ghz speed 24gb of ddr3 ram, ssd drives in raid, 1900x1200 screen, lighted keyboard, wimax internet internal card with LTE Internet card as well (cover all your 4g internet options I say), I would also add Windows 8 or Windows 9 alpha build as the OS. (Windows 7 is so 2009)
-
Core i9 isn't even out on desktop yet. It would be another 6~8 months after desktop i9 comes out before you will see it on mobile devices. Even then, the price would be high. AFAIK, the only advantage of Core i9 over i7 is the higher L3 (12Mb).
Also, by the time Core i9 is on laptop, people will be starting to talk about Core i10 LOL. Would you want to wait for that then? -
