    I have a few questions about the GL702VS-DB74 :

    1. How is its thermal performance going to be? I have read articles in which the GL702 with 1060 reaches 91-92C, so I want to know how the GL702VS-DB74 handles the heat. Is its cooling an upgrade of the system in the GL502VS or is it just the same thing in a larger chassis? And will I have to repaste or will it run fairly problem-free for 4 years? I am looking for a laptop which I won't have to repaste. The MSI GT62VR is also on my shortlist.

    2. How loud Is it going to be? Will it be a jet engine? Or will it be more moderate? I don't mind a slightly louder machine in return for lower temps.

    3. Will it throttle?

    4. What is build quality like?

    5. Will the GS73VR with 1070 that will release soon (some guys say Feb) be a better bet? Yes, it will be more expensive than the GL702, but will it have better thermal and noise performance?

    @hmscott @Donald@HIDevolution @D2 Ultima

And, a separate question - Could you guys tell me which brands have good stock thermal paste which will last four years? Or whether something like CLU or ICD will last for 3-4 years (which I doubt, considering what I've heard) ?

The answers I'm gonna give are mostly speculation extrapolated from previous models by ASUS, because there is no information on this model I can find except for a listing on GentechPC right now (that has a picture).

I honestly believe it won't hold performance. I'm looking at it and it's basically under 1" thick by my estimations. It's not going to end well. I can't see any shots of the internals specifically, though. You should always repaste OEMs like ASUS and MSI. I would not consider the GT62 over the 16L13 either; they're about the same price.

    I can't guess to noise.

    I would bet it does.

ASUS is known for going quiet over cooling.

The MSIs can barely hold a 1060 in the GS series. They do hold it, but barely. I would not think a 1070 would work. I would take MSI in this case over ASUS however, purely because you can run a Svet mod.

For some reason I only got the alert you tagged me on tapatalk. Otherwise I'd never have seen this post.

I've seen stock clevo paste (from sager anyway) work well with good heatsinks for people. Aside from this, everybody generally grants 10c+ in cooling by doing a decent repaste. ICD never needs repasting for the most part unless your cooler is bad and it pumps out/dries up. CLU can last well over a year, but can dry up if your cooler is bad. My CLU was dried to a gray thing on my CPU heatsink after about a year, but my GPU heatsink was still somewhat wet when I removed it after nearly 2 years. Contact is clearly better on my GPU heatsink. MSI and ASUS generally don't have too many heatsink contact issues, though.

Follow the 502 kaby lake thread on here. A couple people have ordered that model which is essentially the same apart from size. Should have pics, benchmarks, and impressions soon

Edit: just saw the VS at the end lol. That other thread should still help though if the 1060 has heat issues 1070 def will

Thanks a lot. Is there any relatively light (6-7lbs) 17.3" 1070 laptop that you would recommend? And thanks for your input on thermal paste.

    1. GL702VS-DB74
    2. Brands with the best stock thermal paste, or if IC Diamond will last 3-4 years.
    3. If you aren't sure about the GL702VS-DB74, any 17.3" 1070 recommendations from you.

I am looking to see if/how MSI improves the cooling on the 1070 version of the GS73VR. If they don't step up to the plate, though, I will be looking for a fairly portable 15.6" (less than 6 lbs) or 17.3" (less than 7 lbs).

If I can't find anything that works well enough thermally with the above constraints, I will probably pick the GT62VR (1070). The Eurocom F5 goes WAY over budget once I add storage and RAM (I have never opened a laptop up in my life, and I don't want to start on something brand new that costs at least 2.5k+ USD with the extremely tempting 1080).

They all run hot, the thinner they are the hotter they run, the noiser the fans, and the more likely to eventually have throttling under constant load.

You can't stuff 20lb's of GPU in a 10lb's sack, and not get some noise and complaints from the sack ;)

The GS73/GS63 aren't even delivered, you need to just sit tight if you want one of those to see how they perform under review and in owners hands.

If you want something right now get the GT73VR models. They have the best features, power, and cooling.

Get a GT62VR if you don't mind a small screen and noisier fans - it's tinier as a 15.6" body so it's got less mass to hold the heat so it's gotta exhaust heat quicker. It's gonna make more noise with those smaller fans and exhaust ports, kinda of a gentle whistling sound - except a heck of a lot louder.

The 16L13 is another choice, but unless you want to dig deep into the hardware and performance tuning, it's not going to offer more than the GT62.

All of the laptops are going through a new release cycle, new design, new parts, new manufacturing, new everything. So there's bound to be problems initially, and it will take time to find them, fix them, and get those fixes into production.

Also, the GS73 and GS63 1070's are gone from US and Global product pages... temporary? IDK, but channel distribution promises aside, it's possible it will be longer than shorter before we see them in retail.

The Asus GL702 1070 is also new, the GL702 only had 1060 before this release, so it's an unknown, we need reviews and owners reports before we know how they run.

Undervolting is necessary to get the Skylake/Kabylake CPU's to stop putting out so much unnecessary heat.

The Asus paste has been enough for me for maximum OC for normal use on 7 17.3" laptops. Others can't seem to keep their hands off re-pasting, but I don't need it.

I run batch jobs 24/7 - but I keep the fans on high and undervolt - and for batch jobs run them at 34x or 35x depending on the CPU.

The Asus paste is that thick kind that lasts for years and runs fine if you leave it alone. MSI paste has so far been good long term too, going on 2 years for the GT80.

So no need to remove it and re-paste for most people after undervolting to take care of the too high default CPU voltage. It really is silly that all these makers are shipping with the voltage so darned high.

I am talking about experiences with the large laptops, 17.3" / 18.4", in the small thin laptops, maybe you will need to re-paste to drop every C you can in temperature, but after undervolting most people run just fine.

The long term pastes like ICD and K5 are good, but will still need repasting someday.

Liquid Metal isn't something an amateur that can't afford to loose their laptop should be playing with.

If you want to use Grizzly Kryonaut, Gelid Solutions GC-Extreme, or other newer pastes just know you will need to re-paste to a schedule, or potentially eventually live with higher temps than the stock paste provided.

Re-pasting isn't needed for most people, but there are some that just can't live without tearing their brand new laptops apart - not even taking time to measure stock temps or tune for undervolt - they just love whacking away at the hardware, but that's not recommended or required for most people :)

The GL702VS seems like a 'great bargain' around $1200 -

It was on sale this past weekend at AMZN for 1200. It's back to regular price, but you can still buy it from Best Buy for 1300.

Wow, $1319.99 is an amazing price for a laptop with a 1070!!

I wouldn't go for an open box unless I was living with in driving distance and I could check it out at the store before buying / leaving.

    Reg. $1,649.99, so that's $330 off!! Wow...
