I was looking at potentially buying this computer last year, or at least it's previous model(which was all black and orange instead of silver).

I'd like to know what has changed from the previous DB74 model other than the paint-job? According to the specs page they unfortunately downgraded both the SSD from 256GB to 128GB and the 1TB HDD was reduced from 7200rpm to 5400rpm.

Did they improve the thermal management? This was my biggest holdback from buying the previous iteration. I couldn't get past people reporting 90C+ when playing games.

Does the 17'' version still support thunderbolt 3? Can it still scale between 60-75hz refresh rates?

    Thanks for any help!

The drive changes are not actual changes - you can still get a 256GB config with a 7200RPM HDD or a model with a 1TB SSD in the M.2 slot and another 1TB SSD in the 2.5" slot - it's just a matter of price.

As for thermals - when were people seeing 90*C? NoteBookCheck reports GPU max at 86*C and CPU at 80*C - that's under P95 + Furmark

If thermals worry you - just undervolt the CPU by a good 100mV and manually increase the fan speed through the RoG application - that should work fine as far as heat goes.

As for TB3 - no idea - check the review here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-GL702VM-GC102D-Notebook-Review.186918.0.html

Just looking at those numbers, it appears both the cpu and gpu are throttling though... The 1060 is at 1300MHz when it should be hitting 1500+ as a base clock.

The cpu is also below the 3.1GHz speed it should have on 4 cores. All together that's a pretty decent performance loss and those temps are quite high still.

I know the drives are not really integrated changes, but this model is still being sold at the same prices as the old one with inferior storage at alot of stores. I saw lots of comments about excessive heat on Amazon's reviews, and Newegg's site as well(at least for the 17'' model).

Still I'm curious if there are any actual changes other than a palette swap.

Both are power related due to the power virus nature of P95 and Furmark - the CPU is running 100MHz below nominal clocks and the GPU is running like that due to the TDP envelope being pushed by Furmark.

Those are people who run laptops on a bed and expect to play games. I remember seeing an Amazon review about some laptop where the guy had given it 1/5 cause the Nvidia driver wasn't pre-installed on his NON-OEM OS that HE installed and was complaining that games weren't running and was upset cause he had to go to the service centre for them to install his drivers cause apparently he was a total bellend.

It's not winning any awards for anything but for an affordable 17.3" 1060 laptop - that's what you'd expect.
