Some weeks ago we got a beta vbios for our HD5870´s from Gary by Asus. For the most people it fixed the GSOD´s in combination with the latest bios for the motherboard.
And mods for the beta vbios came out with unlocked overclocking features.
But there was no version out there that i really liked and so i made my own vbios version.
Its based on the newest beta vbios release and was testet many hours with the new beta bios for the motherboard on an G73 JH (for sure with latest drivers and software).
I spend hours to test, set clocks and voltage to present you a vbios that ables my HD5870 to run overclocked at 800/1100 with 1.15V @ 70-75 C.
If u dont overclock and run with normal settings like 700/1000 at 1,05V you will get (i got it) 66-70 C![]()
Its not repasted or tweaked in any other ways (maybe i will do a repaste later). And the fans never runs @ 100% (they could but they dont do)
In my pack you will find the latest Bios and VBios. There are 2 versions of the VBios in the pack so you can choose wich one is good for you.
One for normal useage and one for overlockers. The Overdrive funktion is given in both versions and i also tweaked the idle clocks and voltage to the lowest voltage. At one page here Chastity wrote that there is a locked limit for voltmodifikations, and this is true but she is wrong with the lowest settings. Mine are the lowest and the highest voltages you can use.
NORMAL VERSION:
- performance: 700/1000 @ 1.05V
- performance idle: 350/1000 @ 0.9V
- UVD and battery: 350/500 @ 0.9V
- battery idle: 100/150 @ 0.9V
OVERCLOCK VERSION:
- performance: 700/1000 @ 1.15V (or higher clocks)
- performance idle: 350/1000 @ 0.9V
- UVD and battery: 350/500 @ 0.9V
- battery idle: 100/150 @ 0.9V
HOW TO FLASH THE VBIOS:
- To flash your videocard you need to overwrite an USB stick with HPUSBDisk and a DOS system.
- After you formated the stick into FAT32 and installed the DOS files, you need to copie the three files from the VBios folder (you will find everything you need in my package!).
- Restart and choose the USB device as boot medium.
- Than type into the started DOS system " VFLASH " and the HD5870 gets flashed with the new vbios.
- Wait some seconds and restart.
- Thats it, you can check everything with some games, catalyst and GPU-Z.
I hope everything works good for you and if this beta vbios mod dosnt works for you, just reflash with the latest original beta vbios from Gary or an other modder. AND NEVER EVER FLASH WITH ATI WINFLASH, ONLY USE THE DOS MODE! OTHER WAYS U COULD DESTROY YOUR CARD!!
HOW TO FLASH THE BIOS:
- To flash your motherbord you need to overwrite an USB stick with HPUSBDisk and a DOS system. (like for the vbios)
- After you formated the stick into FAT32 and installed the DOS files, you need to copie the two files from the Bios folder (you will find everything you need in my package!).
- Restart and choose the USB device as boot medium.
- Than type into the started DOS system " AFLASH " and into the programm the biosfilename and the G73JH gets flashed with the new bios.
- Wait some seconds and restart.
- Thats it
This is a very secure way to flash, EasyFlash broke my Notebook! And i dont trust Winflash and tools like these, so do it as i wrote and be happy![]()
ALL IN ONE PACKAGE Download G73JH Bios VBios Flashtools.zip DOWNLOAD
@ ALL: Best wishes and i hope this helps you out there.
PS: btw if you got random freezes you should update your HDD (my firmware was 0002SDM1 and now i got 0005SDM1 BIG CHANGE!!)
EDIT: Because of the latest Catalyst changes i made a registrytweak witch allows you to enable the much better hidden AF, AA and Shader modes.
Just add it to your registry and restart. Than you can see the changes in the catalyst control center. what high quality AF or EQAA is, can be found by using google![]()
here we go: 2shared - download Catalyst Tweaks.reg DOWNLOAD

Thank you!
I know chastity has done a bios mod (and so did Ziddy, IIRC) that does a similar thing - Mike's vBios package (on here somewhere!) includes these options.
Also, if you could include an md5 hash for those of us who don't trust rapidshare not to corrupt our downloads, that'd be great. -
haha pc crack with own vbios...but how to get the MD5 hash??
btw i hope everbody can understand me, my english isnt very good. -
Rückenmark +rep 1 for that enthusiasm
you are one from the rare people that will mess with the vbios
i think we need ziddy on this subject but don't know what happened to him
btw where are you from? -
thx and i miss ziddy too
im from germany
does somebody have testet it yet? -
so on your modified vbios the voltage is a a little lower?
and there is a little change on the clocks
anything else?
i've tested my video card on 3dmark 2011 and i got small artifacts with 1100 on the memory ... so i need to go a little lower for example 1090 -
a little bit???
,
stock was 1,15V @ performance mode and 0,95V @ energy saveing mode.
its a big change.
and i changed the max overclocking borders so that nobody can crash his GPU.
my card runs stable with 700/1000 @ 0,95V but if i started overclocking it crashed so i took 1,05V and as i wrote, it could be that some cards need more voltage because of the chip quality. if your card dosnt runs stable with overclocked settings, i can upload a version with higher voltage for cards with overclocking problems or not perfect chip quality. this should fix your problem.
but i would like to know how the standart settings of my vbios works for you?
is the flickering gone if you change the energy mode? -
working on an update!
give me a hour
NEW FILES ONLINE
@all first testers:
dont worry the "old" ^^ version wasnt bad i just fixed a little mistake and testet some new voltages and now i think its perfectly fine. overclocking should be no problem now and i could set the voltages @ energy saveing mode a bit more down. 40 C @ idle with passivcooling / fans 0% -
I modified my vbios like yours, but even lower clocks and I dont get those temps lol what drivers are you on? Im still on 10.10 and when idling with 100/150 @.8v the lowest my temps get are 46C...
-
hmm i dont lie, trust me.
i think i just have a good card. and i got it fresh back from the RMA. they changed the GPU. but i only get these temps with my vbios.
im using 10.12 and not the beta because its based on the old 10.11 -
Oh I wasnt calling you a liar, just wanted in on your secret
lol how stable is the high performance 3d clocks @ 1.05v? thats the only one I didnt touch. Was there a significant drop in temps under load going from 1.15 to 1.05 with the same clocks? Sorry for all the questions, ive flashed my vbios so many times with only subtle changes to try and get it perfect
actually ima try it right now, ill edit this post with my results
EDIT: Same max temp of 94C at both 700/1000 and 820/1100 @1.05v in furmark =/ ah well it was worth a shot. -
I noticed a drop in temps when I OC'd the core, but ONLY in gameplay.
Also, I get about the same temp as you in Furmark, CrappyAlloy. A little higher, actually. -
If you want, I can fiddle here and see what settings work, and pump out a modded one as well. What got me interested is the 4+hrs on battery.
-
Heres mine if anyone would like to try it (not to steal any thunder away from Rückenmark, I just dont wanna start another thread)
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
3d Performance clocks = 700/1000 @ 1.05v
2d performance clocks = 405/1000 @ .95v
UVD clocks = 450/750 @ .9v
Battery Saver = 100/150 @ .8v
Gets me about 4 hours and 15 min battery lifejust make sure to change powerplay how you'd like, and use AMD GPU Clock tool before hand to be sure your gpu can handle these clocks. Oh and GPU Observer is a good way to see how the voltage and clocks change dynamically
-
-
@CrappyAlloy
Why these UVD clocks?
I checked the engery consume and changeing the voltage is more important for energy saveing and temps than clocks. So you are running it @ 0,80V like i do but with lower clocks but no big change... just lower performance.
for some cool but old games or projects like minecraftD ), you dont need full speed, but your clocks in batterie mode could be to low for applications like these.
Maybe i can build a release with very low batterie idle clocks.
And btw dont touch the performance idle settings, you will just get crashes.
greetz
PS:
AND I DONT LIKE YOUR NUBERS -
-
@ frosty: i try to ignore your post -
Some weeks ago? Has there really been a new semi-official vbios released by Gary? The vbios that fixed the gsod problem for most users was released here in the notebook forums in the beginning of September. Have I missed something? -
no you havnt missed something
-
with garry's (not chastity's) i can get 1:40-1:50 in baterry mode -
with changed clocks and voltage i get much more time on battery mode.
but 4 hours? hmmm watching a movie or just let it run in idle? -
and yeah i can't watch a single movie with this baterry...
btw i am interested about some super low clocks 100/150 if that will get me more baterry .. at least i want to try -
try his vbios^^
but im actually testing some low voltages for the battery mode to improve my version.
THE ONLY VERSION IN THE WORLD IF YOU ASK ME
0,6V would be "cool" i think
stay tuned (if an update comes out you will get it @ the first page of this thread) -
0.6V would be dangerous sounds more realistic to me -
And when I want to game on battery I set up an intermediate step 275/425 @.85v on my desktop
PS: Ugh...I LIKE MY NUMBERS
If I click on supported voltages it has all the ones I changedoh and my temps (if I start in w/e mode I set to powersaver in powerplay) start at about 36C and slowly rise to about 44C then stop...but the fan never comes on so its still a win

@ crappyalloy:
i played some .mkv videos with gpu encoding support with my settings and it worked fine.
@ all:
use my vbios YOUR DINGDONG WILL GROW!!
@ crappyalloy:
haha crappyalloy, i will made the racei mean säx sells^^
-
Thanks man, this is one heck of a hack...
Temps are good, overclock perfect, but one question:
I have the 10.11 drivers, are they OK with this?
The 10.12 ones got way too hot... -
I just wanted to offer another alternative. Ive been wanting to try 100/100 @.7 but havent had the balls...just yet =X
EDIT: sorry about all the bold above...but I also wanted to add that I have my comp set, in max powersaver mode, to underclock my cpu to about 1ghz, im certain that makes a difference as well. For light web browsing, especially in chrome (as in my experience IE can slow down a bit) I havent noticed any sluggishness -
just flashed Rückenmark's vbios
i will post my opinions after some observations -
^^ crappyalloy, i was just joking
im friendly and i think everybody can choose for his own whats the best for him.
2 different projects are alway good for the users.
BUT MINE IS BETTER
(just want to have the last word *g*)
-
sorry to dissapoint you Ruckenmark but after i posted my last post i unplagged the AC and bam ...lockup so i decided to give it another chance and again bam
the third time i couldnt even boot into windows and bam 3 lockup
right now as i write this i am still using it and i am going back to garry's vbios
looks like my graphic card doesnt like your vbios -
Some GPU chips are better than others, so pushing them to the lower/upper limits may not work for some people. I'm not too surprised that you are getting lockups on such low voltages.
I want to try this - care to share how you got the lower voltages to stick? I also tried a lower voltage BIOS a long time ago but it didn't appear to actually change anything. I guess I'll just try yours and see as well. -
im on it -
hmm i don't know i've got one lockup too when i showed my face so asus smart logon can recognise my face
and before it recognised it a lockup occured
power plugged in -
got the error!
i took the wrong file, it was an unstable testing version (im actually working at this) and the stable release was in a wrong folder. im really sorry for that and i hope you give me a chance to show you that its a good thing.
let me change it and please try it again
 -
i will try one more time just upload the file -
-
silence!! you destroy the magic in side!!!
-
that's why
if i start to modify the clocks and voltage it will be a long storry
there is someone like Ruckenmark who has already tested and his clocks arent extremely low
so i will try one more time -
-
.......a bios will rise.....it will come to save us all......
YOU WILL NOT BELIVE IT -
I do agree with Ruckus though. Its the whole reason why I dled RBE and started messing around in the first place, to get the best possible performance and battery life for MY system
and posted it so anyone with a gpu with similar tolerances may enjoy it as much as I do
-
-
please wait a few minutes !!
-
What tool do you use to modify the vBIOS? I've been looking around and can't find anything.
-
i use gpu z to check and RBE to modify
btw it seems like i found out whats about the voltage:
the card runs well with low voltage but if you go down to much catalyst and gpuz wont give you the true informations out. -
ruckenmark explain to me which vbios (clocks and voltage) did i put on
and why were my lockups ?
probably becouse of the voltage becouse i can get low to 100/150 -
as i posted my first comment in this thread i had really testet many things out and was proud to present you a new download.
but than i tryed to make it better and better and the second download was truly a bit better but then i took a wrong file (as i wrote to you) and it crashed after flashing.
because of these mistakes i spend some time again and tested extrem low voltages and high clocks.
now i can say that i think that my new upload is the good thing i am was talking all the days long.
so sorry again for waiting and trubble. i hope you like this release.
@mite_jan:
would be a pleasure if you test and tell the other ones here as it works.
so everybody can use it without fear -
link? where is it
