As I'm sure some of you know, RAGE was released an hour ago, and I've had the chance to try it out. Even though my G73jh-A2 exceeds the recommended requirements, I seem to have some serious incompatibilities with this game.
Absurd texture pop-in and poor framerates are the main ones. A member on Bethesda's official forums even reported a Blue Screen. (He too is on a G73.)
Well isn't this just lovely? - Bethesda Softworks Forums
Anyone else buy RAGE? Any ideas? All of my drivers are up to date, to the best of my knowledge.
EDIT: Some recent posts on BGSF suggest that this isn't G73 specific.

Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
The only thing I can think about is the engine itself.
As you may know, OpenGL has been always one of the flagship features of nvidia, in the latest drivers they also updated their libraries to 4.2.
I've had Ati cards in my desktop and I remember them having issues with OpenGL games or low performance while comparable nvidia cards gave like 50% performance boost.
Take my words as a grain of salt, it's just an hypothesis.
I didnt had the chance to test it on my gtx460m yet, I'll report back as soon as I get the game, in Europe it will be released on 7. -
News on the grapevine is that it is not card related it is game related. Go take a look at the ID forum and people with desktop GTX 580's are complaining about the awful texture popping poor frame rates and choppyness.
Looks like this will need to be patched before being playable. Thankfully its another OPENGL game that does not take my fancy. Roll on Skyrim -
Here is my video of it on my g73jh Rage Asus G73JH quick test - YouTube
it plays at 11-12 fps in 1080p with no AA + serious texture problems
On my desktop I play at 60 fps with no problems at all (maybe really really minor texture poping but not worse than other games) -

There's a special "Catalyst Rage Performance Driver": AMD Catalyst - Rage Performance Driver
Probably not for mobile gpus (didn't test).
According to here, there are issues with this driver: Outdated OpenGL driver -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Like it happened with Brink. Hell, even Doom 3 doesnt run as good as on nvidia gpus. -

The new drivers fixed this for me. Some screen tearing and pop-ins persist, but it's definitely playable, and my framerates shot right up. Make sure you don't use the old RAGE driver.
This is the one you want: AMD Catalyst? - Rage Performance Driver
EDIT: And, like I said, this is on a G73. So yes, it's notebook compatible. -
Hey guys, I didn't try it on my laptop.. but make those folders yourname\appdata\local\Id Software\Rage and then launch the game. You will see a 1gb cache file in there appearing, wich seems to help a lot in the game. Since my deskptop was already running Rage flawlessly (except the v-sync, wich I just forced it) I didn't really see any improvements but others say that it helped a lot. Go ahead and try it!

Well, I finally hit a wall with Rage... I was getting crashes on loading screens with Rage stopping responding, but I was usually able to restart and get past those spots. I'm now at this Mutant TV arena where you cannot save or quicksave until you clear it, and I am getting crashes to desktop every time I go to exit the area after completing it.
I can't say if this is a driver or game issue, but I'm leaning towards it being related to the ATI drivers. I have read of people changing to lower resolutions and getting past that part, but after clearing the area 5-6 times and crashing out, I think I'm going to give ATI a few days to get the issues resolved.
I know I'm not the only one experiencing the issue because I've read of several people having the exact same crash, I just wanted to bring it up because it stops any progress in the game.
Rage is enjoyable so far, but getting stuck is pretty frustrating. -

I'm an active member on Bethesda's forum, and past the "normal" texture pop-ins and NPC flickering, the MBTV bug is the big one people are having trouble with. For example: Mutant TV Crash Fix? - Bethesda Softworks Forums
I haven't reached that point in the game yet, but it does seem rather game breaking. It's really sad that a developer like ID with a publisher like Bethesda would let something like this slip through QT. I don't think there's much we can do but wait for a real patch over Steam. -
soo we have to wait for a new version of ATI Catalyst driver?? or is it safe to install the ATI RAGE performance drivers? i have just installed it and am playing at 20-30FPS ...am on 11.9..
-

The performance drivers are safe, and made all the difference for me. Here's what I've done to make the game playable:
Installed Catalyst 11.9
Installed RAGE performance driver from here: AMD Catalyst? - Rage Performance Driver
Enabled Triple Buffering in Catalyst
Pasted this into Steam's RAGE launch options:
+vt_maxPPF 16+vt_pageImageSizeUnique 8192 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 8192 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 8192 +com_skipIntroVideo 1
Everything seems to be working well now.
EDIT: Other than Mutant Bash TV. There's no fix for that - it's just broken. -
thx [email protected] but i prefer waiting for 11.10 because i dont like this no version rage performance drivers
-
Wow this game is horrific lol the graphics are appalling not to mention the tearing, popping, jumping, slow down in loading and then artifacting and then finally:
Rage has stopped working... over and over again. LOL 21GB's and it looks and runs like crap!
I just saw this on a review website haha

Mutant TV crash? I didn't have any problems.
I had no bugs/crash at all and I played 14 hours of campaign (on my nvidia desktop).
Right now I am on my laptop and will see if I can play, but from what I see problems are occuring more on ATI cards than nvidia.
I am really enjoying the game so far. -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Yup I don't agree with Dallers. Game is totally smooth with all the tweaked settings to improve visual (not performance) such 8k textures and so on.
Plays wonderfully well on my gtx460m and I've been forced to turn on vsync otherwise too much tearing. Also I'm running 4xMsaa.
Clearly OpenGL implementation in nvidia is still miles away from amd, like it was before. -
-
Yeah, the issues people have been having are definitely related to the ATI driver support... I can't believe there's no updated driver set from ATI or patch from Bethesda/id for the issues that people are having. I get crashing to desktop almost every time I hit a load screen, and Mutant Bash TV should be named Mutant Crash TV for anyone running an ATI card.
I've seen cases where people have gotten past it by lowering resolution, but I've tried the file modification to help fix the texture pop issue and created a folder to allow the local disk cache, but neither fixed it for me.
As I see it, this is entirely on the drivers, and I hope ATI gets a new one out there soon. -
Everyone knows that Nvidia has better OpenGL blah blah blah luckily OpenGL games imo have not been up to scratch lately, I would rather have the extra power -

When I posted about the MBTV crash I hadn't reached that point in the game, and I didn't have any problems there either. There are a lot of reports about it on the forums; that's what I was going off of.
The only issue I'm having now is screen tearing, which hopefully the 11.10 preview drivers which just came out will fix. AMD Catalyst? 11.10 Preview Driver Version 2 -
Still some texture popping, but from I'm sitting, I'd say ATI did a good job with this one
The only thing the game needs now is a patch for that ennoying texture popping.. -
Edit: Nevermind, I redownloaded and reinstalled the 11.10 drivers and then installed rage on top, now it runs great.
For anyone else having problems, after that you can do this (I got it from here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAezcX3dPOk)
Fix for the texture problems.
1.Create a Rage shortcut with the following launch parameters:
+cvaradd g_fov 12 +com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +image_anisotropy 16 +image_usecompression 0 +g_showplayershadow 1 +m_smooth 0
2.Create a file called rageconfig.cfg in Rage/base/ and put the following commands in there:
seta image_usecompression "0"
seta image_anisotropy "16"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr "8192"
seta vt_maxppf "24"
seta vt_maxlockedpages "256"
seta vt_minlod "-2"
seta vt_lodBias "-2"
seta vt_maxaniso "2"
seta vt_qualityhdplossless "1"
seta vt_qualityhdppower "0"
seta vt_qualityhdpspecular "0"
seta vt_qualityhdpnormal "0"
seta vt_qualityhdpdiffuse "0"
seta vt_qualitydctpower "100"
seta vt_qualitydctspecular "100"
seta vt_qualitydctnormal "100"
seta vt_qualitydctchroma "100"
seta vt_qualitydctluma "100"
seta vt_restart
3. Go to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\ and create a folder called "id software" (without "). Then create a folder called "rage" (without ") inside that folder.
4. Run game and play.
OP:
Anyone who has a stable, working version of Rage without messed up textures can you please post exactly what setup you have? And also any config file or launch options you used?
I'm trying to make it work on a G73jH with the 213 bios and 93vbios, I've tried the optimized rage 11.9 driver and the 11.10 preview driver, but nothing really works... -
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
thrakkemarn, are you doing that on a G73? I've tried the rageconfig fix multiple times and it's never worked for me.
EDIT: Oh, and schockie, try putting this into your Rage launch options in Steam:
+vt_maxPPF 16+vt_pageImageSizeUnique 8192 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 8192 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 8192 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +vt_maxAniso 4
That should solve your texture pop-ins and improve the graphics considerably. (And skip the annoying intro.) -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
For SW owners disable Gpu Transcoding since it's useless on our systems. That options uses Cuda processing when the CPU is bottlenecking the gpu, it's a feature nvidia implemented into 28x driver branch.
For CPUs with more than 3 cores it's not needed.
