    Hi all -

I noticed that a few other people were having an issue with this, but I haven't managed to track down a solution - thus, a new thread!

Basically, when I first turned on the new machine, Windows only detected 4GB of RAM. I reseated the RAM, reinstalled Windows using the disc that came with the machine, and for a moment it detected 8GB (though it said only 3.93 GB was usable). I then tried resetting the BIOS, at which time I noticed that even my BIOS only detected 4GB.

Any thoughts on how to solve this? I'm updating Win 7 as we speak.

    Thanks!
    Josh

Update here -if I reseat the RAM, on first startup the BIOS and Windows both detect 8GB, but only 3.93 of that are usable. Odd.

Second update - once the computer has been restarted AFTER the first restart following the reseating, it reverts back to only detecting 4GB. Any thoughts on this?

    Two suggestions:

First, hold the windows logo key and press "Pause/Break" to bring up th System Panel. Make sure that the "System Type" entry says "64-bit Operating System."

Second, run Memtest86 overnight (see the link in my signature below for a fantastic tutorial) to make sure your RAM is good (you may also try removing one SODIMM of RAM and booting with just 6 GB installed to see if it makes a difference).

If there's still no dice, you may want to call ASUS support.

Don't bother with ASUS support. I had the same exact issue and the 2 "CSR's" I spoke with knew nothing and only suggested fixes that most people on NBR have already tried. In the end, they suggested that I RMA my laptop.

They will suggest you RMA with the company you purchased your laptop from. I purchased from Newegg and found out that their RMA process is extensive and time consuming.

They received my RMA this morning and they said it will take 7-10 days to process the RMA. After they decide they can't fix it, they will replace it with the same laptop IF it is in stock. If not, they will refund you the money. I have tried numerous times to make them cross-ship a replacement, but they have not budged on that request. They simply will refund the money if they run out of stock. I seriously doubt I'll ever buy a laptop from Newegg again given my experience.

Curiously, were you ever able to get it to acknowledge that it had 8GB of RAM, as I did? Also, did you test it with different RAM? Just curious.

    Thanks!

I did not test with other RAM as I didn't have any DDR3 SODIMMS lying around. The BIOS recognized all the RAM at the correct speed and amount. However, when in Windows 7 64bit, it never said I had 8GB, only 4GB. Never got as far as you did. Figured I was better off RMAing for a new unit after finding ASUS tech support useless in this matter.

Just thought I should let you know that I was able to set up an advanced replacement exchange with them - essentially, they're shipping me a new unit in 3 business days, and I have 30 days to return my old one, at no cost to me. Not bad!

Who is "they"? Asus or the company you purchased it from?

Yes, I would like to know as well. If it's Newegg, I'm going to go get my gun and head over to their HQ.

Well, don't do that! It was NewEgg, though - I just fired up their live chat client and informed the individual (Benjamin) on the other end that I absolutely needed this laptop for business purposes. They were quickly able to make an exception.
