i haven't even turned it on yet. but here's some unboxing shots. maybe someone can get some actual Vista/gaming caps and contribute to this thread.
and hey, these are my first attempts at notebook pr0n, so pardon the quality -- kind of all over the place. had to shoot these in my kitchen using my Nokia N95-3.
enjoy.

omg turn it on ... lol
edit: is that a full 6 pin firewire pr0t?? -
and here's the ROG 17" backpack. perfect size for a guy with broad shoulders and traps -- didn't want no dinky little backpack for my gear!
has an innersleeve for the actual notebook, and other zippered compartments. haven't stuffed it full yet, but it looks like it might be able to fit the brick + cables + gaming mouse with room to spare for files and what not. shoulder straps are nicely padded, with extra harnesses.
it's an excellent bonus. and with that free 3rd year warranty that ASUS is tacking on the A2 -- just makes this purchase all the more sweeter.

IEEE 1394 and firewire are interchangeable terms... I was wondering if it was a 6 pin or 4 pin port, the 4 pin is smaller than USB and the 6 is slightly larger and angled. My G50V has only a 4 pin, and it's an inconvenience.
...now that I look at it closer it looks like it's probably a 4 pin too... It's kinda dark -
confirmed: four pins. why is it an inconvenience?
-
WhooT!!! congrats.
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
6 pin has power, and for instance when I hook up audio gear that uses firewire it means with 4 pin I have to use AC adapters which introduces dreadful line noise from my dirty power out in the sticks!!
I just thought that maybe with the larger form factor they might have had space for it -
Razer Copperhead Laser Gaming Mouse, with ROG logo. plugged it into my 9400 to get it to light up. the "tempest blue" is nice -- but it will stand out against all the ROG red. maybe they should have included the "anarchy red" version. no biggie.
curious about the "on-the-fly" dpi change! and no pics, but on the bottom of the mouse is the "memory" button.
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Yeah the button on the bottom changes the profile, be careful with the connector on the mouse side, my last copperhead died with a loose connection there. It's an awesome mouse tho!
-
^ thanks for the tip! for work, i think i'll be using a BT mouse (and keyboard, when it's patched to my 24" Benq). but for gaming -- oh sweet, can't wait.

the backpack looks hawt in red much nicer than the green
-
I would love to know more.
I'm on the edge between a G71G-X1(which i believe is similar to this), and a Gateway P-7801u. -
You dont get the extra warranty, backpack or mouse with the X1.
-
I thought you got the backpack and mouse with it. -
sell me your backpack? =)
had to ask... lol -
OMG!!! That is soooo prrrreeeeeeettttttyyyyyy!!!!!
Do you mind telling us how much that bad boy costs? And where did you get it from? -
i got it from ICI Computers. small store in the 604, but terrific service.
http://icicomputer.com/product.asp?pf_id=G71G-A2
easily the best price in Canada! (would have been better, but the loonie has taken a huge dive since the market crash.) plus, free extra 3rd year warranty from ASUS. killer deal. i'm SO glad ASUS bailed on shipping the G71V earlier this year. -
Sweet! Congrats!!!!
-
i am in the 604 as well, I thought the 3rd bonus year of warranty is for US only, not Canada or global.
-
we also need some benchies, plz.
-
Its nice to see some "real world" photos of this model, so thank you very much. Can you post some pictures of the bottom vent locations? And any temp readings you can get?
-
screen caps. all this from first boot. running straight A/C, no battery installed. before the pics, just let me say:
a) it took an extra 6 or 7 minutes for ASUS to install all the bloatware! lame.
b) VISTA is nice! UAC has come up a couple of times -- so it hasn't become annoying enough for me to turn it off. i can see how it would benefit less savvy users. what bugs me though is the "black screen flash" that happens immediately after i okay it.
c) Altec-Lansing speakers sound fan-friggin'-tastic. not sure what's going on there, some sort of 3-D thing, maybe? but it sounds much better than my 9400.
d) NEW. COMPUTER. SMELL. nothing like it. especially when the computer cost $2600 CAD.
now ...
Windows Experience Index
and note the partitions. two per drive. i though there was a "restore" partition? not that i can see, unless it's hidden in C: somewhere?
and for all you gamers out there! i can tell you that SOLITAIRE runs at full 1920x1200 with MAX EFFECTS ON and the framerate never drops below 80fps! don't believe me? check it out:
j/k of course. i'm loading Stranglehold right now. that puppy's minimum requirements is 2GB of RAM, nVidia 7800 and 15GB space. will see how Chow Yun Fat's bullet ballet goes once it finishes installing. -
and a list of apps after first boot:
-
man, all those prgrms noone ever uses grrr, anyway
how is the screen looking? some angles maybe? Ho wmuch does this red beauty weigh? -
^ yeah, no kidding, eh? pretty much all that stuff is gone once i reformat, except maybe Asus Copy Protect? need to do more research. Norton is gone. Office is gone. wonder what that Cisco stuff is for though.
angles are fine -- as expected. just shut it down. i'll try and shoot some pics later. no bright/stuck pixels. screen really is nice.
it's "heavy" for a notebook, i guess. but it's light compared to a 300lb deadlift, so i'm not too worried.
thing is GORGEOUS once all the plastic is off. just a sexy beast.
just blasted though the first level of Midway's Stranglehold. maxed out res + effects, and still smooth as butter. minimum rating to play was 3.0, recommended rating was 5.0. and the G71G-A2 had a play rating for Stranglehold at 5.4.
fans kicked in HIGH about two minutes in. loud-ish. will definitely need to invest in a good cooler if gaming is a priority.
** also: noticed the occasional "pop" come from the speakers when on the Vista desktop. very light. unpredictable. but definitely heard it a few times. nothing seems to cause it.
don't have any other games that are Vista-friendly. -
and by request: VENTS.
can someone recommend a suitable cooler for this config? the space underneath "VENTS" is the battery compartment.
-
I love the big panels in the back, wonder whats under the hood
-
YES! Thanks for the vents pic!
It looks like this would work well set up on an NXZT cryo (i'm guessing that the CPU and GPU are both located under those back vents)
the front vents wouldn't get hit directly but with the amount of air that the cryo is supposed to push this may not matter
thanks again for all the great pics -
(gentechpc.com/Asus/G71g_review/bottom.jpg)
(i guess I can't post links so add a www to that address)
since it looks like the vents at the front are covering the primary hdd, i'll give another plug for the cryo cooler
the fans will blow directly on the gpu, cpu and ram vents
oh great, now I've lost interest in the g50vt, I'm gonna have to get a G71 -
Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, but I've recently ordered a G71G-A1 and it's scheduled to come this Friday. I've already had one request for a full-fledged review, but was wondering if others are interested if I write one.
-
Can someone tell me exactly what I have to do with the laptop when I take it out of the box???? Fist LappyTurn it on, install what, eliminate what and why? xD THANKS !
-
1. Check for cosmetic blemishes and dead pixels
2. Perform a clean install
3. Download windows updates
4. Install antivirus/spyware software
5. update antivirus/spyware software
6. Register your laptop with Asus (required for the 1 year accidental warranty)
7. Have fun -

I have a question about step 7.... please make sure to address it in your review
Seriously tho if you do a review please don't be easy on things like keyboard lag, touchpad driver issues and CPU consumption and the like. If it suffers from the same problems as the G50 please let us know. I haven't recommended a G series because of this lack of insight, I'd appreciate your honest observations on quality. They are things I can deal with as a G50 owner but if I recommend one for a friend I want to know they will be happy and trouble free. Thanx in advance -
1. only one active exhaust fan shared by both GPU and CPU. was surprised to see that the video card is smack dab in the middle of the box with a heatsink rather than at the edge, and that there aren't two fans to help cooling.
2. primary HD has vents, but the secondary doesn't! wonder why that is? did ASUS reckon the secondary drive wouldn't get hot enough?
guys, that CRYO cooler is big -- not exactly something that can be stuffed into the ROG backpack. (or maybe ...?) what do you think of this design for the G71G?
http://www.usbgeek.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=0341
Candice Shane had a good experience with it, esp. vs. Enermax Aeolus:
http://forums.kombo.com/showpost.php?p=456510&postcount=1
but i guess the *big* thing is to find a way to help cool that GPU heatsink in the middle. (also a bit worried that the secondary HD will be cooking ...)
and to that end, i guess this would work too to help cool off that heatsink:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produc...tebooks/Tablet+PCs-_-Cooler+Master-_-34997422 -
2. Well, hard drives don't really over heat often. The main components that cause heat is still the CPU and GPU. -
I honestly didn't really detect any keyboard lag, but that's probably because I was on XP most the time with my G50. But I will scrutinize the G71 down to it's last component for the review as best I can. -
good points.
i'm coming from the Dell 9400 -- which has two fans (at least i thought it did?) and vents on the two top corners, with RAM in the middle. i (and other Dell users) swear by I8Kfan to prevent overheating. plus a cooler, of course. those 7900GS/GT's get hot!
and the other thing, i guess, is that the G71G must have passed thermal threshold tests -- without an external cooler -- for them to okay the design and market it as a gaming solution. i thought i read somewhere that the 9800/9700 cards run cooler than previous 8000 and 7000-class?
and further to your point 2: cooling this box should be pretty easy, now that the GPU heatsink is pretty much in the middle. find a cooler with a pretty much smack dab in the centre and done! -
-
learn something new every day!
one more thing, while we're on the topic of cooling. if you look at my pic of the vents again, at the top, there are two raised feet. forgot to mention this earlier. so the G71G is already more elevated, and has more "breathing room" than say, my Dell. -
Wow, just read the G71G review by Ken. It can play COD4 at WUXGA and 4XAA with a steady 30fps average!
-
^ nice summary review. plus it has benchmarks, for all you benchmarkers! and none of the funky keyboard problems of the G50.
http://www.gentechpc.com/Asus/G71g_review/asus_g71g_review.htm
* only thing i'd add to that review is that there's definitely a fan going when under load.
(Stranglehold ain't exactly a benchmark standard, but it *is* a resource hog, and when cranked to 1920x1200 with full effects, the box does do a bit of huffin' + puffin'.) -
only 1 fan is needed for this laptop?
-
1 fan? The G1S has one fan too, and it architecture sux! The fan kicks in whe CPUgets hot, which means your gpu can cook, if the cpu doesn't...
Hope they remembered that building this beast...
btw: hdd's dont get that hot, are these 7200rpm? The primary hdd will be used more iGuess, where all OSstuff is. -

Somebody please test CoD WaW on it @ native res... CoD4 is old news at this point
-
I actually received my G71G-A1 today (was suppose to come tomorrow)

It's possible they tweaked it, but even at that it should run very close to the same as CoD4. What drivers are you using?
