I got my G73 from Bestbuy. It has (3) 2GB Kingston 1333 ram. There is one empty slot. I would like to add more ram. My question is:
    1. Can I add a 4gb ram instead of 2gb? That will make it a total of 10gb.
    2. Can I add different speed ram?

1: yes, it supports up to 16gb... but why would you need more than 6?
2: typically you should buy the same speed and if possible, brand (mem timings differ from different companies)

    Thank.

The reason I wanted more than 6gb is because i sometimes use my laptop for work. I use them to run finite element analysis, as well as running other design software at the same time.

So, what happen if the ram I got from another manufacture doesn't match the timing...etc. Will it cost any errors, window problems or slow my system down. What are the signs of memory not working right?

Well in all likeliness your machine will refuse to boot up in that state. Even if it somehow does boot up, asynchronous ram timings can lead to frequent OS freeze or BSODs, so its not at all recommended. Try to get the same make as your existing ram as well as the timings.

It's going to match to the slowest timing chip, not boot in some asynch mode. But that is IF it boots.

I would buy a matching 2G module and use 8GB

Thanks for the advice. Didn't realize mixing ram could cost such a big issue. I always thought the manufacturers are making them to some kind of standard so they can be mix and match.

That's interesting. Learning more and more in this forum. Never thought the cpu could affect the amount of Ram. I always thought it was the motherboard that determine how much ram you could put in.
