Just started coming from the right side of my laptop. I went to pick it up and it started pretty much screaming at me. It was a really loud sound coming from the right, sounded like a CD scratching against a surface. I shook it a bit and the sound stopped, however, whenever I move the laptop it sounds a bit like a mini light-saber is stuck inside of it. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Laptop works fine otherwise. Anyone know what this could have been?

    Your laptop is preggo.
Right side? That's around where the GPU is. Some units, including mine, are known to buzz. It's pretty normal.
The sound you're talking about though... maybe a bad fan?

Does the buzz go away when you are on AC?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I wish my laptop were preggo, it'd probably pop out a few baby G51s, and that would be very profitable ;) The fans were my second theory. I don't know if I should open her up over this though in fear of voiding warranty.

It actually started happening when I unplugged the laptop and picked it up to take it into another room, as soon as I tilted it on its side, it started making this really loud scratching noise. I shook it a little and it stopped. Now I can swing it and it sounds like I'm wielding a lightsaber. I'm guessing that could just be the fans that I've never noticed, since I don't normally flail my laptop like an idiot. The initial loud sound is what worries me most. I've backed up all my school stuff but won't be back in Toronto (we have an ASUS Service Center there) until Christmas. Am I safe 'till then?

Don't know, since I don't know what is making the buzz.

Heh, this just started on mine as well. Right side, sounds like a CD spinning about. I'm guessing it's a fan issue. Opening up to clean fans shouldn't, and doesn't as far as I know, void the warranty.

Harddrive? Fan? Is it towards the screen side of laptop or more forward by touch pad?

Sounds like a fan to me, back-ish. More audible trough the back rightmost vent on mine.

I'm living with a long haired dog who loves to shed and a cat who, amazingly, also loves to shed. There's so many loose hairs around, well, everywhere that I'm quite sure there has to be some lodged in there as well.

More towards the screen side, on the right side of the laptop, is where the really loud sound came from. Now the faint buzzing only occurs when I move the laptop around. Weird. I'll take it into the service center @ Christmas as long as it doesn't BSOD on me.

This is just getting worse by the day now. Just hoping the machine will survive the holidays now.

Weird how this seems to have happened more or less at the same time in both mine and the original posters case.

Update us on how you went? I have the same star wars noise when I move it around.

The force is strong and I am just waiting for Vader to show his ugly head...

The noise is rather from the capacitors, last time i have heard loud buzz and the laptop didn't last long. Guess the louder it gets, the worst it goes.

My 5870M caps used to make a buzzing/whining noise all the time when under load but not from normal use. Never did me any harm and gradually went away.

I personally think you have a wasp stuck in there, and By this point he is not gonna be impressed. :D
