I have the Asus G73JH Q720. 64 bit.
Laptop seems to randomly shut down, only thing I can guess is it is heat related. Seems to get unusually hot, even with general use, internet or music, on a level surface. Is this a common issue with this unit? Do they have some system to prevent damage and power down? Is there a specific manual fan control I can get?

This is a heat issue. Mine did the same thing becuase the default thermal paste asus uses seems to dry up and causes the CPU and GPU to overheat and then the internal sensor thresholds kick in and shut down the laptop to protect the components. Suggest you contact your reseller you bought it from and discuss options to get it re-pasted.

its overheating.. you need a repaste.. i suggest you got to asus service centre and have them replace the thermal paste with ICD7 which you can bring along... its better if you do this otherwise a long RMA.. you can repaste yourself but its complicated only if your'e confident..

Try cleaning the vents with a can a compressed air, that might help but seems like your thermal paste is already degraded, there is plenty of posts about repasting the unit by yourself, and doing so should not void your warranty.
I just repasted mine for the second time, and believe me my highest temp I've had after repaste is 84 C on my GPU, (the Laptop shut itself down when 110+ C). Is not that complicated as long as you are careful an take your time. -
@DRSR
Not sure where you got your information, but there is a sticker on the CPU and possibly the GPU screws that if broken will void the warranty. Yes there is a ton of guides, and yes it sucks to lose your laptop for about a week to get re-pasted, but its well worth it to let a certified reseller or ASUS themselves re-paste to keep the warranty in tack. -
The warranty gets void if the sticker on the CPU gets ripped... there is no sticker on the GPU. I know b'cse I repasted mine, for people like me, who live abroad, having the unit send back to Asus and having it back three months later is not an option, I checked and doing the repaste on the GPU (assuming you do it right and don't damage anything on the process) does not void your warranty unless you mess with the CPU.
Random shut downs.
