I'm having a slight problem accessing/using my recovery partition on my G73. I had a problem before that resulted in endless looping of BSOD screens so as a temporary solution to the problem I used a win 7 ultimate disc to restore windows (since I couldn't find out how to use the recovery partition then). Now I need to have a genuine copy of windows so I'm going to restore it with the recovery partition. I know it is there because it is listed as Drive F, using 6 or so gigs of that partition. When windows boots and i press F9, windows boot manager appears and gives me 1 option, "Windows 7 Home Premium (recovered)". And when I press it, it just boots windows normally. I found this kind of funny because that isn't even the OS I have installed now, yet it is asking which OS to boot and that is the only listed option. Another thing is that the recovery partition never appeared (in windows) for me until I held down F9 (in which windows just booted normally). According to the user manual, it says to press F9 during boot up, then press enter to select Windows Setup[EMS Enabled]. That doesn't appear at all.

So my question is what could I be doing wrong? It acts like my computer does not have a recovery option yet the recovery partition is indeed there. Is there a way to burn the recovery partition to a DVD and boot it? OR some other means of running it. Could I make a boot option for it in BIOS and launch it that way somehow?

Also, my charging cord only charges in one position. By position i dont mean the position of the cord itself, the position in the DC jack. Does anyone with experience know if this is a power cord issue or a DC Jack issue? I can fix it myself so no I am not sending it in for repairs. I need my laptop for college, and I have enough experience to fix it myself.

And does anyone know if the GPU fan is sold separate from the heat-sink? the GPU fan + heat-sink is $85 from what I have been able to research. I think that the overheating GPU has killed my fan and resulted in a very loud and annoying rattling cycle of about 1 minute every 10 or so minutes. I am re-pasting my GPU as soon as my ICD7 comes in the mail.

I was going to post this on the Asus site, but they have a very very un-user friendly forum. It won't let me access the damn notebook forum for some reason.

Thanks for your time and responses.

Well, at this point you have a couple of options.

One: Reinstall Windows 7 from your Windows 7 Ultimate disk, while using the licence key on the COA sticker on the PC itself. To do this you must first remove the restrictions on your current disk (what makes it an ultimate disk to begin with) and then re-burn this to use with your key. To make the disk follow the instructions here: Win7: ?One Disc to Rule Them All? Is No More - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

Two: The second way to do this is to actually obtain a Windows 7 Home Premium disk and activate using your key, or call ASUS and have them send you recovery disks.

Keep in mind though, you did mention that the PC was giving you some stop errors (BSOD), historically, these computers have been known to have shipped with defective A-Data DDR3 modules, to confirm this please run Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic. If errors do occur, start to remove modules until you find the defective module(s), also try all of the slots using known good modules. This is because in rare cases the slot itself is bad.

In regards to the fan, I found one here 13GNY810P220-1 ASUS G73 G73JH G73JH-RBBX05 COOLING FAN - eBay (item 270683416472 end time Jan-21-11 13:13:23 PST) . But first apply the new paste and clean the heat sinks, since the computer might just be raising the speed because of a clogged heat sink or bad thermal paste.

Finally, I believe the DC jack is the problem on this case, I will check the spec sheets at work tomorrow to verify what type of jack this PC has. It can be soldered to the board (bad + expensive w/labor), a daughter board (easy to replace, not so expensive), or a dongle (very easy to replace, usually not very expensive)

Thank you so much. I did try using my key on the bottom of my laptop and of course it didn't work. I didn't know you could remove the 'ultimate' and make it theoretically generic. I'm kinda new so if there is a reputation system installed on these forums like others, I will give you some.

I am currently re-obtaining Win7 and will try your first method as soon as I burn it to a DVD.

I would also like to know more about that DC jack. I'm afraid that the day will come when I can't charge it and i'm sol.

I would still like this discussion to be open for the recovery option though. I am just too curious and need to know why that crap wouldn't work.

You're welcome. Back in the Vista days the disks were generic, and the key would dictate which version you had, but Microsoft had to ruin that. Thankfully though Office 2010 disks are now generic, but Office 2007 were version specific.

Also, the reputation system in the scales on the left between the status light and report button. Thanks!

Actually, you can skip entering the license key during the disk install and it will ask you what version you'd like to install. Just choose the one that came with your notebook and then after windows boots and it prompts you to activate, just go into control panel > system, and type in the code then.

That's the same thing he just said! haha

My ICD7 just came in the mail today. I'm going to repaste, and I might make a video guide since I have only found guides with pictures...none on youtube.

Windows is running, with my serial code on the bottom of this thing.

My GPU is repasted, with a 23 C drop idle. Haven't tested gaming yet. There was a layer of dust a half a centimeter thick on the filter on the fan.

And I looked at the DC Jack when I had the motherboard out. It wasn't loose or anything. I didn't see anything that should prevent it from not functioning properly. Maybe it is internal?

It could be internal, try another charger before you do anything too drastic. Try to get your hands on a universal charger and test it. Good job with the rest though.

I Just played metro 2033 for an hour. Temp was at 65 C when I quit. That's over a 40 degree drop since it decides to die at 105 C.

    1) G73 Series Driver and Application Reference

    You'll find a Win7 Universal iso there (2 parts)

    2) See in my sig a link for the AsusROG forums. Asus closed the normal notebook forum, and opened that one, and now the inmates run the asylum!
