Did anyone repaste them? My G53SW is clean but I'm getting 93c during games (when GPU throttles down).
I already repasted but now I'm willing to repaste GPU memory.

Could I replace that thermal compound (blue cube) with MX-4?

What games are you talking about?

Starcraft 2 used to get very warm (85+ C), but then I switched some settings to CPU-driven as well as did the fps-limiter and the problem went away.

You might try cleaning the vents with some canned air and propping up the back of the laptop to allow some more "breathing room." Personally I just use a small staple box that's about an inch high and it seems to lowers temps 3-4 deg C.

Compound is fine on the Vram as long as it fills the gap and makes full contact with the module and the heatsink. If you do not have good contact and the Vram gets too hot being run over a period of time you could burn out a module and then its game over. A gap normally bigger than .5mm compound will not be able to do the job properly unless it is very thick as it will spread out. I tried and tested it several times on the G73 5870M and it was met with failure.

They commonly use thermal pads because they conduct well enough to cool the Vram perfectly fine and as the DIE is where the majority of the heat is generated pads make sure the gap is filled as the heatsink normally presses into them for good contact.

Before 6970m mod i had the 5870m with the Vram on IC-7. It work ok if you use the same pasting method like on the core. But only down side is getting IC off the vram on a later repaste

Read what was said above nobody said you couldn't apply compoud on the VRAM the compound itself would not burn out the RAM, lack of contact to the heatsink may. As long as the gap is not too big and you use a thick TIM like ICD there should be no problem, pads remain an easier option because they conduct well enough and make sure there are no gaps not to mention the cleaning issues as DH said which is a knightmare.

It is a common mistake to think that the VRAM relates to the MEM(IO) temperature and effects the overclocking ability of the card, the VRAM is not the same as the Memory Controllers so by applying compound to the VRAM you will not see any difference in the overall operating of the card compared to Thermal Pads.
