    Congrats :D

    I agree.

Probably not. I have 8GB's of 1333 and I see no difference in performance at all :(

If I would have gotten the auo screen the second time I probably would have upgraded the screen myself and cried in a corner if I got the slower ram which would have meant I did all that for a downgrade.

EDIT: wasn't thinking about the last part (deleted)

Windows7 has awesome DPI adjustments. Sure, it doesn't look the same, but more options are better.

It's like saying "Hey, I prefer my honda fit over my porcha because the porcha uses too much gas..."

Will the superior rgb led screen that a previous poster mentioned in the alienware fit? Thinking about swapping that one and selling the 1080p screen in the x3 that I will order.

For the price of doing that you might as well just get an AW with an RGB LED.

How much is the rgb led on the alienware? Thought it would only be like $200 on ebay or something.

Try $1000 and it wont likely work in the Asus.

Holy...$1000? That's absurd. It better be 3d without the glasses at that price.

Things like RGB LED's are never cheap aftermarket. If you configure a new AW, it's a much more reasonable $200 upgrade.

Alright. Just came across this thread and I'm asking if someone would be kind enough to summarize the damn whole thing, as I have almost no idea about what that whole screen debate stuff is about. The only thing I understand is that apparently G73 uses different screens (from LG or AUO) which are of unequal quality and there is no way to know in advance which one you get. Am I right ? I'm planning to get a G73 in europe soon, is that a problem that affects every area ?

You wouldn't be able to make the swap anyway. The Alienware screen is 16x10, yours is 16x9. The panels are physically different sizes.

Could someone post some pics of both screens. It'd be good for comparison's sake.

i went to best buy and was lucky enough to get one with a better screen today, it was a pretty big difference. i wasn't able to get through an episode of lost cause the blacks were so blue and dull on it.

i don't think anybody is going to be able to provide you with screens of both laptops but as somebody who experienced both it was definitely worth the trouble of getting the better screen. the old one was worse than many of those on NETBOOKS!

i also noticed that the keyboard on the g73 i have now has a more tactile feel to is instead of a more "gooey" soft feel to it, i liked the old one better. the mouse clicker thing is also much less firm and its a lot easier to press. the stickers (windows, intel, ati) are also on the RIGHT side of the computer as opposed to the left side which is interesting imo.

both displays however are still very mediocre for a high end laptop, one was was just unbearably terrible.

Well maybe not pics of both, but if someone posts a pic of one of them it'd be good. Stickers on the right are always better since they just get worn out if they're on the left from using 'wasd' when gaming.

EDIT: nevermind my camera isn't compatible with windows 7 x64 :(

the colors and brightness are good, but the contrast is just so so. i highly recommend you go to best buy to try it out yourself. the best buy i went to had a whole little section dedicated to the g73.

You are right!! I never thought of it that way.
With all the money I spent upgrading my G73JH I couldn't dare game on the keyboard.

I would like to recommend the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard. This thing is AWESOME for MMO's & FPS. It also works with Fraps, displays the news through RSS feeds, displays time & Date, displays ram & CPU usage, dispalys in game status for most newer games, ingame profile switching & much much more. You can even download additional apps. It also has color customizable backlighting. I can't say how wonderful this device is.

Am I in the minority to say that my AUo screen doesn't seem that bad? I adjusted the gamma and contrast and it seems to look pretty good. For those of you who got AUO screens and returned them, did you try adjusting the screen either via the ATI control panel or via the Windows 7 calibration. My laptop seems to be working okay but I had the screen go blank a couple of times. I'm not sure if there is an issue or if it was the trend micro update that Windows 7 reported might have been the problem since it started happening after that.

If I was you and I thought that the Auo screen was fine, I wouldn't bother with this thread and the threads addressing the differences between the two screens.

I didn't think the auo screen was bad actually. Just read what people said here about the lg screen being that much better and thought it wasn't right that might had the "inferior" one so to speak.

It is lame that Asus used different screens for the BB versions. But if you think your screen is good....I would move on. Other users before you just like you had the Auo screen and switched because of these threads and said it was a frustrating process to exchange for the LG screen. But most of them did say it was worth it.

At this point you've probably already made up your mind with what your gonna do in regards with trying to get the LG screen.

I wish you a hassle free experience if you chose to do so.

I saw both screen and would admit that the LG was slightly better.

This post definitely brought GREAT enlightment because after adjusting the gamma and contrast, I find the screen to be MUCH on par with the LG. LG still has VERY slightly better angles but as for the rest, it is now clear that the factory settings of the screen are for the most part what's causing all this fuss.

    Gamma went from 1.30 > 1.00
    Contrast went from 100 > 90

    Let me know your opinions!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. My friend has an A1 and I know that his screen isn't THAT much better than ours....their all okey dokey screens.

I use to have a Toshiba A505 about a year & a half ago. That screen smoked even the A1's screen as far as viewing angles, contrast and depth perception. I also have a co-worker who has an HP Envy "Beats Limited Edition" that has a screen that clowns the G73JH no matter what model.

I justify the G73JH's lack of screen quality compared to other manufactures because they offer a whole lot less performance for the price.

Nope, I agree as well... had the LG, swapped the machine for a new one and it has the AUO... and honestly, can't tell much of a difference. I did calibrate the screen using the Windows 7 tool, and that improved it, but all and all I'm just fine with it.

The whole screen issue with the BB model has made me go with a used w870cu model instead which was priced competitively with the BB model. I think also the graphics chip might be easier to upgrade maybe when the gtx480m comes out. A bit of a gamble I guess to go with this, but the other alternative is the alienware r2 which is almost $1500 more. I'd love 5870CF, but man that's a bit too expensive for my blood.

Not exactly, mine cost about $1510 AR, and had the 920xm ES in it, and 4GB 1333mhz of kingston memory in it.

Any how, it's a good laptop. I was critical of the keyboard at first, but after gaming a while on it, it really works well. The response when typing is great too. Very quick, and I think the G73 would lag on certain keys at times for some reason. Touchpad seems more responsive on the w870cu.

Fan is noticeably louder than the G73 at both idle and load, battery life is a ton shorter.

Laptop looks more refined overall, and is less bulky than the G73.

    Firewire, esata, DVI ports.

This one has easier access to the GPU, and CPU

However upgrading might be pointless given the 5870m is so powerful already...unless the GTX480m proves to be a beast.

So I'd tell your buddy and everyone else to go with the G73, as it's more practical, and offers the best bang for the buck assuming you are buying it new. I would say if you know you will want to upgrade the gpu the w870cu might be the best option.
