Ok I plan on modding my Asus G72 in the following way..

-Replace current processor with an Intel C2D E8435 (3.06ghz)

-Mod the cooling system a bit by using artic 5 thermal compound on said processor instead of the current thermal pad that is in it and putting VGA heatsinks on the copper pipes (Which I heard helps out really well)

I saw someone running Battlefield 3 on the E8235 clocked at 2.80ghz with no ill effects on the machine and he was able to play it pretty darn well. My only thing is that the wattage is higher so I know it will create more heat. My laptop never moves and sits on a glass table (Only time it will move is to clean the table or clean out the dust on the machine) I saw this mod for the G72 here on the forums

I noticed the panel was still pretty open and prone to dust so it seems. But mind you since I will not be moving this laptop in anyway (I have other laptops that go on the road with me). Do you guys really see an issue just taking the cover off completely and using a nice Laptop cooling pad? I don't plan on OC the new processor at all and will disable Turbogear in the BIOS. I just need this PC to hold me out for a year....after that I am building a desktop and using my tv as monitor for it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I see nothing wrong with doing this. This is exactly how I run my G72GX. I have the quad core one and it is definitely cooler with the bottom off. I also am using the Cryo lx. Keeps it nice and cool. I am surprised once I took the bottom cover panel off the laptop is now actually cold to the touch when idling.
